  • This video is an update on the review of the 10" Explore Scientific Truss Tube Telescope. Finally, the skies cleared up here in Washington State lol.! As you can see in the video, dark clouds still managed to sneak in and obscure my viewing for the evening. But it's all good, I managed to get some beautiful moon footage anyways.! Plus, I thought the effect (clouds rolling in) actually came out pretty spectacular.! Thanks for watching, and clear skies folks... clear skies :) :) :)

    I've recently taken delivery of one too - the optics are really crisp, and for my unit I had to get the mirror to the base of its travel for optimum focussing range. Collimation by eye was really easy, but I have been a skilled Newtonian user for decades.
    For comfort, I have also bought a large folding aluminium camper footstool, whose dimensions of 45cm x 38cm matches the base feet position, and raises the instrument by 20cm - at which point the eyepiece position, and finderscope (yes, I also bought a 50mm finder, but straight path for preference) becomes very comfortable.
    ES's 40mm 52 degree 2" Erfle is an wonderful eyepiece paired with it, and for star-hopping and deepsky it is incredible, and I would recommend it to you wholeheartedly - at about US$100, its a heck of an eyepiece. Spacewalk is a good description.
    For easy movement when assembled, I also bought a foldable 260kg capacity hand trolley.
    At 35kg, its not too heavy for a big scope, but trying to haul it over 100m is definitely going to be a workout, so a small hand trolley is much recommended !
    I made a shroud from black elastane-cotton fabric for little money, and this boosted the contrast by a good 50%.
    Overall, it is a superb telescope, and in terms of bang-for-buck it is an incredible instrument.

      Thanks for the excellent review. This telescope really developed my love for astronomy, and I, too, recommend it as well. 😁👍 I ended up selling this one and purchasing a Celestron 180 mm Mak-cass with a Celestron Advanced VX mount. I will try and post a review soon.! So busy with my schedule and videos, I can take considerable time to produce when it comes to recording and editing videos. But you definitely sold me on that 40mm eye piece. That sounds excellent. I did purchase a focal reducer for my Mak-cass for moon observation purposes as well. With the Dobsonian reflector, I worked on Collimation... now my challenges are with Polar alignment for the go-to mount 😬 Thanks again for the comment, and I know you will enjoy your telescope as well 😀 👍

      @@rickgonzales Before purchasing the 10", I have (and retain) my 4" f/14 Maksutov Cassegrain on EQ mount, and that is my planetary telescope - so its good to have both ! The lightbucket was a must-buy for the good price, and the Mak is contrasty and fine for planetary work. On the cards for 2024 is a Celestron C8 or Meade 8" on a fork mount - I'm sure to get the funds together for one in the near future. Personally, the most mechanisation I accept in a scope is a motor-drive (which the Mak has), preferring to do astronomy the old-fashioned way - with manual controls, a planisphere, and a copy of Sky-Atlas 2000.0 at hand....

    How would this compare to the Apertura AD10? I have a Costco membership so the $600 price is attractive compared to the AD10's $950 price, but the AD10 comes with some extras as well and I'm not sure how they compare.

    What I can't understand is because having the Canon camera, you record on a cell phone. BTW the Celestron XYZ adapter did not worked for me. On the other hand, with your 20MP camera you could get a lot better shots. If the second video was recorded with the Canon camera, then I recommend that you take time to investigar the camera setups; or the last invest in a better eyepiece.

      Thanks Fugo Maye. Thanks for the comment :) I haven't used my Cannon 70D DSLR because I haven't purchased the T-adapter to mount the DSLR ca era to the Telescope I believe I mentioned that at the 5:40 mark of the video. Also because the camera is so heavy I needed to buy counter balance weights and learn the manual settings on the DSLR. Unfortunately, I can't do everything all at once. Plus, I need to learn this hobby as time permits because I do have a rigorous religious and secular work schedule. Clear skies is also an issue here in Washington state 😁👍

    How do you protect primary and secondary mirrors from dust, bugs, etc.
    Also do you need to cover entire scope with shroud?
    Does this scope needs fan for cooling?

    • @rickgonzales
      @rickgonzales  4 года назад +1

      Actually I just use the paper and cover board that came with the telescope to cover the primary mirror. As far as a shroud, when the telescope is resting, I just keep a large plastic bag to cover the whole telescope to protect from dust etc. And ss far as cooling, I haven't seen the need for any type of cooling fans yet.?

      @@rickgonzalesThe shroud is to stop light pollution from getting in while you're using it, not while it's resting and not being used. Although I guess it would help there too with dust and bugs.

    Hi Rick. It's November 6, 2022. Are you still happy with this scope? We're new to the hobby. A couple of months ago, my wife got an Orion 4.5EQ from a friend who is moving ($100). It's a nice small scope, but we're considering a larger aperture one for in the spring. We're considering an Orion XT8 8" dob, and this is in the same price range for a larger aperture scope. Any thoughts? ....we're in the Rockies, with no/very little light pollution.

      @@petset77 Greetings Steve, sorry for the slow reply. Yes I was extremely happy with this reflector. It allowed me to grow my Astronomy interest... but at the same time, solidify my Astronomy hobby. Now... I'm looking to get into astrophotography and being that this reflector does not have auto tracking capability, I'm looking for a new telescope. So for me, the only draw back was no auto tracking. Other than that, I had plenty of enjoyable nights exploring the night sky with this Telescope 😁👍

    Hi Rick i have found this telescope on craigslist new in box for $500. Do you still recommend this telescope? I cant really see the difference from the costco one to the one on the es website other than the fans and one is white and the other is black. Is the one from the es website worth the 200dlrs more? As it costs 699.00 right now . Thanks and hope to hear back from you soon.

      Greetings, Yes I do recommend this telescope. There are a few differences between the two telescopes. There are a few reasons I went with the one from Costco Wholesale. The one from ES didn't have a metal housing for the secondary mirror. It just has this black foam looking thing. The one at Costco had a metal housing for the secondary mirror. It just looked more like traditional Dobsonian with that metal housing. Also, Always remember, when you buy from Costco, you always buy a guarantee with your purchase. If your not satisfied, you can always return it :D I have been thoroughly satisfied with my purchase and am in the process of adding some additional eye pieces to my collection :D I hope this helped you. Sorry for the slow reply, I haven't checked my RUclips account for a while because Ive been so busy. Clear skies Eduardo :) :) :)

      @@rickgonzales I was curious about this as well. As you mentioned you can't beat the Costco insurance policy. I was not surprised you replaced the red dot finder. I think it's nuts manufactures put these on DOB mounted scopes, I guess cause they are cheap. Also not surprised you replaced the Barlow as the one that came with it looked cheap as well. Can you actually notice a difference visually between the two Barlow's? If Costco still sold this scope I'd seriously consider getting it as $600 for all that is pretty great deal, assuming the eye pieces are somewhat decent

    Hey, great videos you did on this. Unfortunately Costco no longer sells this, so I'm thinking about getting the Aperture 8D8 or 10 (haven't made up my mind yet). You live in Washington right? I live near Seattle myself, curious if you've joined any local clubs or have scouted any good dark locations for good viewing? I'm also curious how your DSLR worked out. I've read DOB's aren't ideal for astrophotography but curious how it would be on DSO such as Orion nebula & such. Great stuff!!!

      Yeah I saw that on the website. I'm wondering why they dont sell them anymore.? Maybe it's a summer time item only.? Sometimes they sell completely out of an item before they offer a new item too. Then theirs always that sales gap until the new model comes in.?

    Great video! Seems like a good telescope! I would really like to be able to view other planets or even possibly deep space features. I am completely ignorant when it comes to telescopes, but what has been your experience with viewing stuff like that?

    • @rickgonzales
      @rickgonzales  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Evan 👍 One thing to keep in mind when knew to Astronomy or telescopes is that not all telescopes are the same. Some are designed for deep sky objects like galaxies or nebulae. Others are designed for closer objects such as the moon and planets. Another thing to remember is that when looking through a telescope, some new to Astronomy think they will see those bright colorful images that NASA puts out in documentaries or the internet. You dont typically anything close to those kinds of images unless you get into astrophotography. Im happy with the telescope I selected, I need to spend more time with it. I have a super busy schedule lol But that being said, I would meet up with some folks having a stat party where theres a group of people using their telescopes look through some of them and that will give you an idea what your getting into 😁👍

    How is the collimation on this truss tube?

    • @martinlagrange8821
      @martinlagrange8821 Год назад

      Piece of cake - the best process is to first attach the truss to the upper barrel, and then gently lower the truss to the mirror box, and tighten it home when at the end of travel. Its also best to keep the foam protector block in place until you have done this. The truss is very strong, allowing the scope to stay pretty rigid with no flex to speak of. Collimation only changes very slightly, within fractions of a mm - but being an f/5 system, its prudent to check it after assembly.
