I like the idea. I just made some shell floaters by cutting pieces of pool noodles in 12-14 inch pieces then splitting them down the middle and using spray foam to glue them on the inside of the shell. That way you don't have to worry unscrewing the bottoms when you are going to field hunt. 12 Red head shells ( 69.99 on sale) + 6 pool noodles (6 bucks) + can of spray foam (3 bucks) = 12 floaters/ field decoys for less than 80 bucks!
no it all stays above the water the keel on there keeps it from rocking to much and getting swamped. but I just made these this year and I haven't used them in the field yet, but I have left em out in some pretty good winds and noting went down. I have complete confidence in them. if you wanted to you could cut the wood out with the tail included, its no big deal I just calculated out the max number of bottoms I could make out of the board I had, and just that 4" tail piece would have
nocked that number back a full decoy. and all decoys will be different but the tail of mine actually sits higher than the belly of the decoy about 3/4" so there would have been a gap no matter what. but the decoys you have may line up just right. it just takes some engineering and play with your options. if your concerned with the gap you could always attach another piece of pine cut to size to act as a water blocker (by the tail) or spray a line of spray foam onto the board to act as a wall.
good design, but there is one flaw, the back. if water gets up in there, it will sink, and the water can freeze, and it will be stuck in ice, and break the decoy. just get some urethan foam, and fill the shell, and then put your keel in there. easier, more effective, no flaws.
why would you go thru all this work????? ...use pipe wrap isulation...... drill the shell decoy and use black zip ties to hold the pipe insulation on...we did this back in the early 80s....still on the decoys today
Trex Charles ya i do trex...about 1.30 for a six foot piece......1 dollar per decoy to make shells into floaters.....WE DID IT TO ALL OURS..THANKS FOR SHOWING THE RUclips WORLD YOUR IGNORANCE WHY DONT YOU LOOK FOR YOUR SELF ON HOME DEPOT OR LOWES BEFORE YOU SHOOT YOUR MOUTH OFF ABOUT SOMETHING OBVIOUSLY YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT

You just saved me a couple hundred bucks, thanks!!
Just did a few this morning with the foam method. Some junk shells for back water hunting. Awesome idea and Thank you...
Brown Pipe Insulation is a way as well. That way you can take off the insulation and stack the decoys in the boat easier.
Good design and thanks for your service.

Have you had a problem with the pine one of water coming through the gap in tje back?
This is great!
Nice video!

Would spray foam work you think?
It'd be expensive, and make it irreversible. But whatever floats your boat... Or goose I guess
one question, I would like to use these in the field and on the water, but with the keel it won't sit upright on ground
any idea to get around this
nvm just finished watching the vid😂😂
how do those do in a river?
Very nice

Very cool. Why go out of your way with extra expen$e when you can build it for less? A+ brother.
These two guys are totally hot. They should do gay for pay movies. I’d buy that!
MAKE MINE OUT OF EGGSHELLS ( OSTRICH ) OR LARGE SEA SHELLS OR EVEN SPENT SHOTGUN SHELLS !
Buy pipe insulation. It is cheaper and already gray enough to look like goose feathers
Def way more cost effective. I can buy all this wood i could prolly find some junkers and just repaint them.
sorry but im lazy would rather just buy a dozen floaters
Your over thinking it
Mass produce them an sell them
