Hi sir I own a 30' sailboat which has the md11c volvo engine with that original (volvo?) Gearbox..it has gone south. Are there any other options than repower? Love the md11c.. Gearbox seems simple.
Gn captain Chris I have a advance 120 c marine gearbox on a cummings 220 hp engine .. when it put in gear it keeps a grinding sound and for some unknown reason likes the gearbox is overheart
That whole situation just screams that the previous owners did minimal operational checks on the transmission. The oilsorb pad does not show as much oil from the transmission as it should have had to catch. ( looks like about 1/2 gallon at most, the majority of marine transmissions need around double that. ) Kudos to the new owner for actually having the oilsorb pads, they are not cheap to buy even if they can save you large fines from oil spill into the water. ( fines depending on cruising area in both if present and amounts )
Jaqui Greenlees It blew out because a gear slid off an internal shaft and it seized. The fluid blew out all over the the engine room and into the bilge. The oil sorb was put down after the fact so that’s why it seems to be such a small amount. This is a once in a lifetime catastrophic failure. The transmission shop in Fort Lauderdale had never heard of nor seen this before. And BTW we recommend many items to have on your spare parts list. Oil sorb is one of them. www.captainchrisshipstore.com/collections/good-stuff
Had to R&R damper plates on a pair of v drives. No fun. The bulkhead was too close to the transmission so the engine had to be slid aft. Made up some guides to keep the engine mounts from falling off the beds. Ah so much time working head down Lol.
I’m new to boats but I’ve been a auto mechanic for many years. I just bought a 19 foot 1981 L&M runabout with a OMC 230 in it. The guy I got it from said he was out on the water for about an hour and it made a loud clunk and stopped and now it appears the motor is seized. The oil looks good and he said it never over heated. When I put a wrench on the balancer pulley I can move it about a 1/2 either way before it stops with a clunk. The clunk sounds like it’s coming from the bell housing area. Is it possible that the transmission is locked up? I’ve never torn into one of these but I feel I will be soon

Interesting - from the comments - just understand that life happens. Did I see a sea chest in the engine room? What brand model boat ?
Robert Frost yes good eye. There is a sea chest. This is a Great Harbor N37. Thanks for watching and for your comments. 😎

Was there enough room to slide the prop shaft far enough astern to pull the transmission ? Did you need to pull the shaft coupling?
Karl Jensen had to slide the shaft back 7 inches and jack the motor up to get the tail piece to clear the coupling.

The only way to find out is to separate the transmission from the engine to see if it will spin freely. Good luck with that!
Great Videos I wonder why the plug came out ? AWESOME videos thanx smokeywilson
My thought is they it had no locktight of any strength and the vibration of the engine just loosened it over time.

quick question captain. Can i keep an absorbent pad under the engine and transmission or that can be a problem?
I see many boat owners who do this without issues.
Ouch that hurts. Not a cheap repair.
Captain Chris
