This was super solid. I actually was debating trying to go for a Studio Display but the things you talk about here in the video is exactly the kind of stuff I would run into. I'm running a Macbook Pro and a custom PC and switch between them often. So input would be an ordeal. Also, I've been using an Ultrawide for awhile now and I'm not sure if I can get myself to go back to 16:9. Thanks for sharing these opinions. It's super helpful!
Same here. Had it, loved it, however it had a purplish hue over the screen. I couldn't justify the price and the missing flexibility. So John still UWA or 27inch 4k? I'm in doubt.
@@robertdoeleman3471 Honestly I'm at a loss because I LOVE the way the 4k looks but I love the usability of an ultra wide. For now I think I'm sticking with an ultra wide.

Thank you for this honest review. It's is refreshing to hear that tech experts can make the same kind of purchase without fully researching what we are buying. Keep up the great work!
Studio Display owner here. After using it for a month, I really feel like it's for a very specific group of people. For example, I'm a Graphic Designer, so color and sharpness are critical for me, I don't need multiple ports since I only use two Macs and I have a small desk so good internal sounding speakers really help save space. I'm sorry to hear that your experience with the Studio Display wasn't so great. I do wish there were more 5k 27" options, perhaps one with more ports for your needs and perhaps one with just the 5K quality and without the bells and whistles of the Studio Display. Hoping we'll see some good Monitors in 2023.

Love the honesty. PS: really digging the new cabinet in the background. Is that from the same place as the side cabinet you showed in a previous desk setup/room tour?
deo. I've had my Studio Display a little over a week now and completely love it for the reasons you stated but have reservations for the other reasons you've stated. While working with my Mac, there's nothing better. But I'd like to get the new ASUS Ally and try a bit of gaming on my monitor but that doesn't look like an option. So now a choice has to be made, are the benefits of this monitor neck deep in the Apple ecosystem worth the tradeoffs, or do I settle for something slightly "less than" for the flexibility?
Do you have to unplug your computer from the Apple Studio Display in order to swap the input with that HDMI cable to USBc? Or can you use on of the other USBc ports as an input? I I want to input an Apple TV into this monitor, but I don't want to have to unplug my laptop input each time, ya know?? I'd use the Apple TVs bluetooth audio mode for sound :)
Finally, a video about the apple studio display that addresses the number one issue every person with multiple Apple products will encounter. You can only hook up one input which is just ridiculous. I’m bought into the Apple ecosystem with a MacBook Pro and now a new Mac mini M2 and I can only cook one of them up to this wonderful display. What a sad situation.
Great review Tom! I have the studio display on my personal desk and love it, but I'm using it as Apple intended. I connect my switch to my LG Ergo that's on my work desk. On my work Macbook I use an app called monitor control to be able to adjust brightness and volume on my LG. I believe it was free and works brilliantly.
I was planning on getting a Studio Display for film school but it'll be a while. I just got an LG Ultrafine 4k 27 inch as a gift to replace my aging Acer monitor so I'm not considering another display until this new one goes out.
Great and honest vid. It’s not for everyone and that’s ok. I have a studio display in my home office and love it, my favorite monitor by far, but I’m all in when it comes to the apple eco system, it integrates perfectly.
Heads up. Anti reflective coating on my studio display is showing signs of clouding. Lines across the middle of my screen. Only used microfiber and light water as recommend. Apple seems to suck at these Ar coatings. I’m sad
Great review! This is the main issue I ran into as well, and why I went with an OLED TV-as-monitor for my current setup :/. As desirable as the Studio Display is for my Mac, my PS5 and work laptop wouldn’t be as compatible yet.
It's a real shame as it looks fantastic in your setup Tom! Have you thought about the new LG monitors? I've ordered a 4k LG ultragear monitor last night after reading nothing but good things with its performance for both gaming and content creation. It might be worth having a look at those? 4k 160hz with HDR600 for £600 right now.
This really nails my only issue with the monitor. I'm willing to pay for the build quality, the 5K and don't even mind that it's only 60hz. But the headache of connecting my MBP, PS5, XSX and Switch to it at the same time just kills the idea for me. There are too many hoops to jump through!
Oh, it’s not 120hz? I’ve had mine for a couple of years now and really enjoy it as my main desktop monitor and honestly thought it ran up to 120. Thanks for the honest take on this - most videos on “I returned this Apple device” tend to be quite overly dramatic click-bait’y stuff 👏
Really tempted to get one of those beauties tbh. :D Would be fantastic for colour-accurate graphic design work and especially for photo editing. I'm working on a photobook at the moment and have to double-check every page with my iPad to get it right.
Could you tell me if iPads are more color accurate than MacBook displays? (because I haven't thought that way yet.) Or do you use a third party display?

Good news Tom! Just today it was announced that Samsung is coming out with a 27" 5K monitor that has USB-C, DisplayPort and HDMI ports! It's called Samsung ViewFinity S9. No word yet on price or when it comes out but this could be a good option for you!
For me, I need HDMI input not just HDMI output, and I need extremely low flicker so I do not get headaches due PCS. I can use my iMac 24" all day but can't stand to watch 30min of TV. Any specs on flicker or recommendations? Thanks for your "heads up" about this upcoming Samsung ViewFinity S9!
Have you seen BenQ’s range of monitors for design etc? I’ve been after a monitor for a while and since I refuse to drop more money than my laptop was worth on a display, BenQ’s come with some nice features for more than half the price
I wonder if they could fix it with a software update? Seems like a huge miss if they didnt allow themselves to fix anything that could turn into a “somethinggate”
Good point, but maybe the Lack of more INPUTS on the Apple STUDIO will be the downside, as software won't fix that. It seems the Studio isn't meant for anything except being just a good and expensive single monitor at the end of the daisy chain.
Does the HD60 X capture card pass the video directly to the Studio Display through the USB-C cable? Your video is a jewel! It would be Heartbreak for me too. Thank you for explaining the need for HDMI input with audio is just Not Happening. I'm grateful for your tests and saying the HD60 X "capture card" was a possible route to this solution albeit expensive. Please, can you say if the HD60 X passes the video directly to the Studio Display through the USB-C cable? One of the on-line written reviews of the HD60 X posted in Jan 2023 said, "For Mac, they actually sunset their native Mac OS equivalent for Game Capture and no longer update it except for security features; which means that the last supported external card device is the HD60+. If you use the HD60 X, you're forced to use OBS or QuickTime, which has a bit of latency if you try to game through passthrough." Basically, I did not realize that the dongles are only HDMI output; the Club3D does not carry audio; the VR headset "was a rabbit hole" to not go down. Wow, thanks for your time and your clear explanation of your findings. Thanks again!
What a shame! Have you seen the news about the Samsung Viewfinity S9? You should review that when it's released. Seems like it addresses a lot of the connectivity issues you found with the Studio Display.
Hi, well done, for me it's a waste of money. Sure 5k is not the same as 4k (I have a mega eye for detail). But let me tell you, I personally knew that I wouldn't want this monitor despite all those advantages you talked about. (For me, half of these are no advantages at all, I have better speakers, camera too, metal casing doesn't thrill me, price exaggerated like everything from Apple). I bought a new Dell U2723QE and let me tell you, it was worth it. Mega blacks, almost like OLED (IPS Black panel), colors like an Apple monitor (factory calibration, 98% DCI-P3), thin 3mm bezels, plenty of ports. I recommend you this monitor, you will be mega satisfied. The 4k image really is good and sitting 40-50 cm from the monitor even the text seems at a really mega good level. You just need to have a good quality cable (I got a Thunderbolt 4 for $50). P.S. I got all the others from Apple ;) just like you
So for me, I will still go for a standard monitor, and I can use it with my windows laptop and Nintendo Switch. But for an apple fan, this monitor properly it's the best one for the Apple ecosystem.
The single input source is the biggest problem of the studio display. If god forbid, anything happens to the input usb c port then your display is rendered completely useless. Moreover, the biggest problem with that is it's not an easy fix as you need to change the whole board if you want to fix any of the usb c ports.
Sorry to hear of your disappointment. Thanks for sharing this! I have had the same idea after seeing your cool setup and I'm getting the Studio 32GR/10C/32G in a couple weeks myself. I already have the iPad Pro M1 12.9 and the same setup was going to happen then. But now with your disappointing experience in mind, I'm gonna have to go to the LG Superfine and look at the back of that to see if that LG monitor (which happens to have the same LCD quality) will have the HDMI input separate from its USBC inputs and any more, and that certainly will be cheaper than that apple Studio Monitor!
Try the Huawei Mateview display. It is very similar, costs less and gives me the opportunity to use it with every usecase I want, even gaming with the Nintendo Switch, even tho the 4:3 scaling is a little akward at first 😊
Great and super honest choice Matt👏🏼 the monitor market is very competitive and even if Apple can stand out in some specs, there are cheapest monitor with acceptable alternatives. I can suggest suggest you to switch to 32”, the LG ERGO 32UN88A; even if it ha a 60hz as refresh rate, it is a satisfying solution for every aspect you mention in the video, and allows you to save money or invest £ in something valuable to you 😉
The fact that it lacks pro motion and maybe the price is why I’m still trying to find the perfect monitor. There are a lot nice ones, including the studio display that has a lot to offer but none that does it all. Dough might the closest as of now but not sure I wanna go for one because the company’s bad reputation..
Honestly, the thing is also just the whole USB-C port problem in itself. Because USB-C mostly just represents the form factor of the port. Like you have with USB-A, USB-B which, the latter one is mostly for printers. And then you have USB-C which is the "more modern" one. But that doesn't say anything about it's capabilities. Example: USB-C = USB3.2 Gen 1×1 (USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen 1, SuperSpeed) Which outputs USB 5Gbps USB-C = USB 3.2 Gen 2×1 (USB 3.1, USB 3.1 Gen 2, SuperSpeed+) Which outputs USB 10Gbps USB-C = USB 3.2 Gen 1×2 (USB 3.2, SuperSpeed+) Which outputs USB 10Gbps USB-C = USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (USB 3.2, SuperSpeed+) Which outputs USB 20Gbps USB-C = USB4 Which outputs USB 40Gbps (This is also the most expensive one if you need any cables and also the most up to date one.) That being said, you also have the newest version coming in: USB-C = USB4 Version 2 Which outputs USB 80Gbps+ Than you also have the naming of all these connectors. Like USB4 (Mostly in the pc/windows world.) And Thunderbolt 3 & 4 which again, 4 being the newest (and fastest) out of the 2. When it is a Thunderbolt port/connector however, you will be able to output video AND sound. At least, in my experience. It doesn't matter if the connector/port is USB-C. If it's not Thunderbolt, that means it won't output any video/sound but rather depends on if it is USB 3.2 2x2 for example. Which will give you about 20Gbps transfer speeds when copying files. But it won't do anything for your output. Yes, that's how complicated they made it. I was hoping with USB4 it would just be 40Gbps and we would move on to that. But NOPE! We now also have USB4 Version 2 (which outputs 80Gbps+). Aah, the world of USB! 😅
people complaining about the price / screen really don't understand how expensive MiniLED, 99% P3/AdobeRGB, 120hz monitor will be. The closest is Asus ProArt, and it's $3,000 at 4K, not 5K, with quality control issues.
As someone with a Mac Studio and a 120Hz 4K monitor, you won't be able to get 120Hz out of it. I know it's not a big deal for you, but something to note when upgrading your monitor.
I hope Apple comes out with 27 inch Mini-Led Monitor with Pro Motion in 2023 at the same price of the studio display. Meanwhile, I hope that LG comes out with 4K QD-OLED monitors in 2023.
Been waiting for this since watching the unboxing. Such a shame it didn’t work out but fair play to you for going back to the old setup Tom! Another maddening thing with this product (and the Pro Display XDR) is that if you have multiple recent Apple products, you can’t connect them simultaneously. I have both a work and home Mac, both USB-C, and the only way I can make this work as a single monitor setup is by connecting/disconnecting the display cable every time I use a different machine. Sounds like a daft obstacle but I just want them connected at the same time- an easy task on 99% of 4K 32” displays. For the price I can’t just can’t justify the benefit of 5K resolution without the ability to do that. I do love Apple products for that ‘it just works’ simplicity but sometimes it’s clear they haven’t considered function over form.
I contemplated a Studio Display for awhile but ended up not going for it because it just seemed, as you said, it's really best if you're in the Apple ecosystem ONLY, really need the extra fine-tuned color and brightness, and have no need for other non-Apple device inputs. I don't need as much versatility right now but I think I want a future-proof setup. Also those bezels...yikes.
I think one of the best things about your videos is your honesty about products. It's obvious that you love Apple stuff, but you're also totally OK with sharing why a specific product didn't meet your needs and you're willing to return it. That lends a lot of credibility to your reviews. The Studio Display is a bit out of my price range, but I enjoyed the video anyway!

I have! going to be keeping an eye on that for sure
P.S. I got all the others from Apple ;) just like you
I'll check that Dell out!
There is the samsung M8 too that is really good. Smarthing, airplay, monitor and TV
So for me, I will still go for a standard monitor, and I can use it with my windows laptop and Nintendo Switch.
But for an apple fan, this monitor properly it's the best one for the Apple ecosystem.
100% agree
Maybe a hub ?

Not via hdmi but usbc
It is very similar, costs less and gives me the opportunity to use it with every usecase I want, even gaming with the Nintendo Switch, even tho the 4:3 scaling is a little akward at first 😊
Heard good things about it !

Great and super honest choice Matt👏🏼 the monitor market is very competitive and even if Apple can stand out in some specs, there are cheapest monitor with acceptable alternatives. I can suggest suggest you to switch to 32”, the LG ERGO 32UN88A; even if it ha a 60hz as refresh rate, it is a satisfying solution for every aspect you mention in the video, and allows you to save money or invest £ in something valuable to you 😉
It’s Tom 😉 and thanks for the suggestions I’ll check them out!
@@ByteReview sorry Tom, I don’t know why I wrote down Matt🤷🏼♂️😅😁 maybe I was listening to Muse😆
The fact that it lacks pro motion and maybe the price is why I’m still trying to find the perfect monitor. There are a lot nice ones, including the studio display that has a lot to offer but none that does it all. Dough might the closest as of now but not sure I wanna go for one because the company’s bad reputation..
Yeah I’ve heard a lot about dough, monitors look great on the website
Honestly, the thing is also just the whole USB-C port problem in itself. Because USB-C mostly just represents the form factor of the port. Like you have with USB-A, USB-B which, the latter one is mostly for printers. And then you have USB-C which is the "more modern" one. But that doesn't say anything about it's capabilities.
Example:
USB-C = USB3.2 Gen 1×1 (USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen 1, SuperSpeed) Which outputs USB 5Gbps
USB-C = USB 3.2 Gen 2×1 (USB 3.1, USB 3.1 Gen 2, SuperSpeed+) Which outputs USB 10Gbps
USB-C = USB 3.2 Gen 1×2 (USB 3.2, SuperSpeed+) Which outputs USB 10Gbps
USB-C = USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (USB 3.2, SuperSpeed+) Which outputs USB 20Gbps
USB-C = USB4 Which outputs USB 40Gbps (This is also the most expensive one if you need any cables and also the most up to date one.)
That being said, you also have the newest version coming in: USB-C = USB4 Version 2 Which outputs USB 80Gbps+
Than you also have the naming of all these connectors.
Yeah I heard that too, as mentioned I’m not too fussed by it but it’s a solid bit of future proofing
Sorry to hear it didn’t work for you. While I love the looks of it, at $1479 US it’s just way out of this teacher’s budget!
3 inputs? You'll be lucky these days to find 2 inputs.
My current Dell has 3 but it seems that way 😭
Unfortunate you had to go through all of that and end up returning it.
You’re going to have to tell me how to switch between Mac and PC with a click of a button 😊
I appreciate that, thanks!
It IS possible to have the sound for Switch go through the Studio display. I just made a tutorial explaining how. Love your videos! ruclips.net/video/0B0ZyM1Nz8E/видео.html
What are you guys doing here? It seems like so many people want this display to do things that it wasn’t intended for… don’t give a device a bad review because it’s never gonna fit your needs.
Dude, multiple inputs is something every Monitor priced above $500 US should offer.
Lol he still uses Mission Control vs Stage Manger to switch to other apps….noob.
