  • Kazankina had alreday sliced an astonishing 5.4 seconds off of the previous 1500m WR 4 years previously in 1976,and another second off of that time earlier in the 1980 season.Here,running in Zurich after the Olympic Games,she lowered it another two and half seconds!This was faster than the great Paavo Nurmi ever managed the distance.Unfortunately there will always be doubts over her times,along with many of that generation of athletes with the rumours,founded or otherwise,of state contrlolled drug administration to sportsmen and women in the Eastern Bloc.In 1984 ,having refused a drug test,she was banned for 18 months and retired.

    The times that Kazankina ran is probably comparable to the times set for 1500m up to 10,000m in the 90s for men. I am more inclinded to believe those 90s times are not legit. Kazankina has said athletes were given a cup of something regularky by their coaches and they never questioned it. But no other Eastern Bloc athlete got remotely close to the times she ran and she was in fact a genuine talent drugs or no drugs.

      @@shunedel I’m inclined to believe that Mary was clean. Throughout her career in the 1500-meter races, her times always hovered around the 3:57/4:03 range - no huge and/or sudden leaps in improvements. And when she did fail a drug test at the 1997 World Indoors, her time was in that range again, and she came in second. She blamed the (now proven faulty) T:E results on her being on birth control. And the controversy pretty much ended her career. But there were plenty of Americans who did dope from the 1970s through today.

      Tatyana Kazankina had been competing since the 70s. She won gold medals in Montreal and Moscow. Her career didn't end abruptly in 1984. The controversy you speak of was her refusing to be tested because the IAAF would not allow a Soviet official to be part of the process.
      As for her reaction, no "lamer" than Steve Ovett or Paula Radcliffe. LOL!

    ...and it worked so well for so long! I've often wondered about the balls of the IAAF....sadly there isn't a safe women's WR from pre 2000 on the books.They really ought to be dumped,but no one has the bottle.Be messy...all those poor buggers for a generation running clean and coming in 4th behind various East Germans,Russians,etc.One assumes the various samples from that era might still exist?No will to do it,I guess?(unless you were the poor sod in 4th!)And later on the sprinters joined in....

      Your observation lacks objectivity. If you want to discuss "having balls", lead by example. Expose and criticize everyone (US, GBR, Eastern Bloc, China, Germany, etc) or truly substantiate your accusations.

Jamaicans and Americans finishing 4, 5th and 6th suddenly finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the sprints. At every level till international, the reverse was true until the nineties. We'd run against white sprinters going backwards at district and clubs, then watch blue, red and white/red (W. Germans doped too!) dominate at athletics grand prix, Olympics and world level. The silence is criminal.

    For the sake of argument, one can make all the assumptions they want about doping. However, performances of this magnitude also required discipline, competitive temperament, tactics and talent. Moreover, Western athletes were partaking in blood doping. Numerous countries, aside from the Eastern Bloc, had access to drug and training regimes.

    • @kurtfrancis4621
      @kurtfrancis4621 7 лет назад +1

      WELL SAID! Drugs DO NOT REPLACE TALENT NOR WORK. They merely enhance it. And if you read the late Charlie Francis' book, SPEED TRAP, you'll find that both his own results and those of East German coaches didn't always workout despite artificial aids. Most doped athletes did not set records or win medals.

      Yes, and in communist regimes there was plenty of motivation to succeed and make those roids work for you. That's something people living in non-communist countries can't relate to.

      The yanks doped to compete with the East Europeans so the natural order reasserted itself. Doped whites don't beat doped blacks.Clean whites don't beat clean blacks. Clean blacks occasionally beat doped whites, but clean whites can't get near clean blacks..its not us who need to dope, but if they do we do too.

    • @andersonarmstrong2650
      @andersonarmstrong2650 3 года назад

      @@MrVpassenheim W. Germans also doped. The motivation was mainly political but it was Diaspora Africans these women and men doped in order to beat. If not then there would be no need to dope at all, as these athletes were professionals in an amateur era. When the iron curtain caje down, doper coaches were in demand. Two decades worth of performances were critically overlooked because the athletics world would rather doped white athletes win than clean blacks.

      Using those well-trusted steroids. Grrr! Africans have had a long tradition of distance running. Much greater population and nobody can deny, based on results, that there's a genetic component involved. I don't think Africans use. Look at those nearly-emaciated bodies.
