From what I've understood Larian is taking a hardline stance of only allowing things that are in the vanilla version of DnD5e, so they could definitely add a questline where you befriend a pseudodragon. They did allow you to get multiple storyline familiars in their previous games, including a wizard's cat familiar.

  • @CVonRatz

Not a pseudodragon, but I once DMd a game of dragon heist, and the warlock wanted to know if they could get a fairy dragon familiar. I was new to dnd and so were they, so I let them roll to see if they could get it, a d100... they got a nat 100. I let them have the fairy dragon familiar with no debuffs and even let them have one of the more powerful colors. I made this thing a bit of a prick to the other party members, biting the sorcerers ass, always stealing bagels from a bakery nearby, and it always loved to pair bagels with strange condiments, like mayo.

I gave a friend a pseudo dragon during her solo adventure, just so she isn't alone and I as the DM can give some hints. She's a new-ish player, so I use the dragon as guide. Cat like, telephatic, I love that still-nameless dragon and she loves him too.

Part of my headcannon is that one of the reason why pseudodragons are so valued as familiars specifically by wizards is, in addition to having an intelligent companion to converse with and assist with the creation of potions or researching spells, is that their venom is a primary component of the magical ink required to scribe spells into one's spellbook or scroll. In my game a pseudodragon can be used to half the gold cost of scribing new spells. (although the one player who has one doesn't know that yet)

    • In my world Pseudo dragons can have different colored scales, their capable of speaking normally as having an intelligence stat of regular people and only be able to convey simple emotions is criminal.
    • My Pseudo dragon is named Adolla, she is a golden scaled Pseudo dragon found in the woodlands surrounding my PC's city and joined my teifling wizard/monk after a monster attack a holiday hunt with gluttony and acid.
    • Adolla is a loving partner who helps out in spying as she has a "Ring Of Spell Storing" in the shape of a collar.
    • She regularly has spells like Haste, & Dragon's Breath.
    • Despite my PC being royalty she'll often (consensually) harvest her venom and the dragons venom to make extra money.

What a wonderful video. I was smiling throughout the whole thing. I love the lore and narrative that you weave into the script.
In the campaign I am currently playing in, my character is a good natured gnome named Fizzy with a psuedodragon familiar named Delirus. Delirus often telepathically shares stories of himself in which he claims that he has in the past battled powerful litches, solved ancient riddles, saved the world with the help of several companions, and even slayed gods.
Of course, all of these epic adventures are just flights of fancy and storytelling conjured from a creative little draconic mind. Right?
Totally unrelated to all of that, the first character I ever played level 1-20 was a divination wizard named Delirus...

I hope you don't mind me saying this was a cute video, but it was, and I really enjoyed it. Pseudosragons are one of my two favorite familiar options; the other being Tressyms, and my first main 5e Wizard managed to acquire one as hus companion, after he has to go on the run, and "stole" it, caged by his mentor, as he fled. Assumed it would be happy to be free, and leave, but it elected to stay and accompany him, even though he wad going to be on the road, and probably hiding, for a winter while. Was a fun companion.
I will say I wish that they were more "you can just choose this as a familiar", and make a spirit of the form, because they can be very fragile, impossible to replace, and the world is a dangerous place, but I'm still quite fond of them.

As to #6, I've never held with the cat analogy myself. A pseudodragon is intelligent enough to develop whatever personality suits him/her. But, if you want some inspiration, you can always ask Vlad Taltos, in any number of books by Steven Brust. First one is called Jhereg, and it introduced Loiosh. The Jhereg is not a pseudodragon, but its pretty darn close. The author happens to be from my home state, and is often able to be found at the Minnesota rennaissance festival, usually playing music and singing.

Awesome remastered video, I'm in a campaign now where my DM wants me to find a Pseudodragon instead of just using the find familiar spell for it. Your video gives me some great ideas for role playing once I manage to find one!

@@jameswilson2516 maybe a ring of fire resistance that I can wear on its claw. That would be up to your DM. Try dreaming up your own items and see what your DM will allow. After all, the rules aren't set in stone and are merely a framework for an adventure. Maybe have attached to your backpacks some vials of alcohol that your pseudodragon can pick up and drop on the ground so they break in the middle of the enemies. Use druidcraft to start a little spark and set the alcohol on fire. The only limit really is your imagination.

      They'd be even more like a cat.😂
Okay, they'd be deceitful and manipulative, getting others to do the 'heavy lifting' and then abandoning them once the pseudodragon has what they wanted, often when their "companion" is in a tight situation and could really use their help. Maybe play up femme fatale tropes.

    • @AJPickett

Well... an astral entity that takes the form of a creature can live indefinately as long as it's not destroyed, so there is that, but... its not the same as a real, flesh and blood companion of course. Astral minions don't fart when sleeping on your lap, for instance... ok not the best example, but, you know what I mean.
