I read a few of Mishima’s books in high school on my Uncle’s recommendation. Very complicated man but with a beautiful soul and imagination that shined through. His works similarly have an incredible dualism. Sometimes delicate and touching but other times gritty, disciplined and stolid. I recommend Sun and Steel as a companion to Patriotism, really rounds out his philosophy towards the end of his life.
My father-in-law from China was billeted with Mishima's brother. He's the only guy I know that was in political prison.........in three separate countries. That has to be a record of some kind!!
Another one of those layers that adds color to Mishima is the strong supposition that he was a closeted homosexual. A few of his books have very clear gay themes and elements of internal struggle against it. He was a fascinating man
I was not familiar with the piece and read it before watching. I was surprised when Reiko spent time cleaning up after the lieutenant's suicide. Great video thanks for introducing me to a thought provoking piece even if it does at times feel to be propaganda. What else should you expect with a title like Patriotisism?
I wasn't familiar with the man till I saw this video. It is a shame when I hear about people who feel they were born too late. What a loss for humanity that becomes.
I'd usually say it's a loss when they die by accident. He killed himself - exactly how he wanted to. Loss, indeed, with Mishima as a writer... But Mishima as the strict adherer of Bushido, not even in the slightest!
I don't think he achieved he achieved his honorable death but a ridiculous replacement. He couldn't die by suicide but by sepukku so he had to create a situation that would force him to.
damn I'm not one to give too much of a shit usually but that seppuku writing was brutal . maybe im just high. maybe put a content warning, it's p heavy
No offense, but you definitely have not read most of his work, he created this outter scenario to live out his obsession with his own destruction, even his mother and brother admitted this at his funeral. This theme runs throughout most of his work, but I'm sure you haven't read any of his work.
I think it's because of the footage and mention of suicide. For a long time this video has been up without any restrictions, so I'm assuming someone must've reported it.

Not that closeted. But somewhat.
Esoterica has an excellent video that would serve a good companion to this one. Thanks for it

Same here. Had never even heard the name before.

incredible
It's weird in the game Freelancer there's clearly a faction inspired by Yukio Mishima except they are all female.
