My father had one of these in grey and white. It was an elegant tank. My friends and I used to sit on the rear bumper to make the leveling system work.
Love that "PVC" at 8:46,...ahhh emission control's !!! Packard's are glorious cars, it's just too darned bad, that they are not made today . Some of the upper level model Studebaker's came close to looking like these Packard's , didn't they ?
Packard and Studebaker merged in 1954 The president of AMC, George W. Mason, had planned to include Packard and Studebaker in phase-two of his formation, (in 1953) of AMC Unfortunately, GW Mason died in 1954. The new president of AMC, George Romney, decided to, forge ahead with his original idea of producing low-cost compact cars; rather than producing various consumer lines of cars, like the "big three" (GM, Ford, Chrysler) Neither Packard or Studebaker were in good financial shape prior to their merger (sort of like the K-Mart and Sears merger) Both needed to re-tool as well as merge. Studebaker was headquartered in Great Bend, Indiana with Packard in Detroit, Michigan. EDIT TO CORRECT "1956" to 1954 for P-S merger.
Correct. It takes a minute or two for the vacuum tubes to warm up. A common failure item in these radios was the vibrator. It was used to create pulsating DC which was run through a transformer to step up the 6 or 12 volts to about 90 volts the tubes require. The contact points wear over time.
Oh Boy, WHAT was that noise at 28.00 !?! It sounded a bit like one of those old jazz trumpets. I listened to it again... (OK it's the power antennae) WoW-wooh -Outta site ! Gee, these boats certainly got character. Swell looking car. Stately -but it sure makes the scene. (I like it.)
The radio makes over 100 volt. Via a vibratory power. It's hard to get the parts today I think with research you will find a person/ company that guts the chassis and installs new transistor guts in side. So it looks like the old radio. Prefect.
Hey Nick ... Why didn't you sit on the rear bumper to prove that the load-leveler works. Thats what we used to do with the neighborhood Packards when I was a kid ... ride up and down on them until we killed the battery. BTW, there was a switch under the dash to turn off the load-leveler.
Funny how Packard was never able to leap over that very early 50s look. For instance, the rear pillar and back glass are so 1949 Coupe de Ville looking. Nice but by 55 quite dated. I wonder what 57s and 58s would have looked like before Studebaker debased them so badly.
Packard is one of the few cars where I'd rather have a 4 door than a 2 door. The 4 doors had an ocean of space in the rear compartment. Many even had footrests. Nobody ever felt cramped in the back seat of a Packard 4 door. On the other hand, this 2 door doesn't really add any grace over the 4 door. It is just as tank-like as the 4 door. Nothing sporty about it.
+Edwin Figueroa This car has been sold. I now have a 54 Packard Patrician for sale. It is an all original car. Everything works. Same owner for over forty years. Let me know if you have an interest.Thank youNick
You got that right. I salvaged one from a old auto. 1 turning head 2 power supply 3 amplifier. And It whipped that 6 volt battery in short order. Got a small han eclipse (r) Lawn motor to turn 6 volt gen to keep the battery up. Pappy was all for Turing it out for junk. Till he found that it got the cleavland Indians. Why he even bought the gas hi hi.

Yeah, but is it solid? Just kidding good fellow, just kidding. I couldn't resist. I'm a chronic wise ass with the scars to prove it.😜 But in reality, that is one gorgeous car for sure!!! They are built like Panzer tanks, but they are well proportioned so they're not like big cumbersome boats. All others in its class seem like they're either made of flimsy twigs and berries, or just ridiculously gigantic. That makes me supect that the engineering was rushed or just overkilled. Packard always nailed their designs. That is until Studebaker showed up to the party already drunk and ruined the entire operation. I can only imagine the yelling and screaming at the board meetings once the books finally came out in the wash. Packard really got painfully screwed, and literally destroyed after that merger.😠 I'm currently hunting for a 1936/1940 120 sedan, or a super 8 sedan in black, dark green, or navy blue though I'm quickly taking a shine to what you have right there. I also really like the aqua! My favorite guitar is almost that same color. Very nice car buddy! I'm sure it's a lot of fun! And thanks for the great video! Be good to her, and she'll be good to you! 😉Ciao!
You are in error, the reason for their demise was because they produced a cheaper model which cost them a lot of prestige. Cadillac took advantage of that.
Had a car like that from my grandfather. At the time had no place to store it. Was getting ruined so I sold it. Wish I had it back.
NO AIR-CONDITIONING Wonderful car! I live in Arizona.

A favorite Beauty!!!!
At 6:02 I can see a few small dents in the front lower bumper also. But still, one nice Packard.

Hi-way car all the way
How do I get a catalog of your beautiful vehicles for sale?
Some Packard models had tail lights in 55 like a 54 , some had tail lights like a 56 ?

tube radios take several minutes to warm up brother
Yes, and if you hear it humming , that's normal too.

Salut my friend super car . super video subscribe subscribe
How much are you asking for the Packerd
It is sold
Is it supposed to smoke THAT much??
Water vapor
I fear what the "Cool Crowd" might end up doing with these Packards one day. God forbid "Gas Monkey" or "The Count" get ahold of one.
No AM radio will get a signal inside a garage. Radio probably works fine.
Yeah, but is it solid?

PackardBaker...
My 1955 Packard Caribbean was quieter than that.
Packard was a victim of the Cadillac.
You are in error, the reason for their demise was because they produced a cheaper model which cost them a lot of prestige. Cadillac took advantage of that.
After the war packard produced a cheaper model I think it was named the 190. That hurt their prestige more than anything thing else.
