Thanks a bunch for this. I just had my main (larger) battery replaced so the 12V must be the issue. Would I have to use another car to jumpstart my 12V battery or can I use a jumper box purchased from an auto store?
Seems like it's an easy line of code(s) or maybe a mechanical switch to have the main battery pack divert some volts to the dead battery for a backup jump if you're stranded.
There's a reason for this. People would hit that battery jump button every time and never change out the 12v battery. That battery is crucial in a crash, where the traction battery gets disconnected, and with it, you would lose your lighting, flashers, power doors, locks, radio, and everything. In a crash your car would just go dark where it sits, which might be in the middle of the road.
I was wondering about this for my Mercedes ( I've never need to jump it but some things are good to know just in case ), so there is no positive and negative under the hood just a positive under a sliding plastic door so I'm suppose to connect the negative to a metal bolt on the car so im gonna go look for one so if I ever need to do this and I don't have service I can still do it with my battery jumper I keep in my trunk. I'm also wondering if its worth it to remove both floors in my trunk to get to the actual 12 volt battery if so how because only one terminal is exposed and to get to the other I have to remove the battery. ( why could they not just put the batter under the trunk floor flush with the body instead they put it at an angle under the hybrid battery >:( ).
Also make sure that your positive jumper cable isn't touching the sway bar on the car while it's on the positive terminal, which will cause it to short out, 😅 LOL. @1:33. 😬Yikes, Lots of Fireworks 🎆
"yet".. Hopefully you don't own one for a long time, until the technology advances. In the current state, they are worse than ICE vehicles in every way, including emissions..
There's no benefit to sitting there and letting the battery get juice from the ICE car once the Start button is pressed and the EV is booted up. Just hit Start and disconnect the cables. Don't keep the person helping you from leaving by staying hooked up to keep taking their electrons. You're just wasting their time. The power converter is engaged at that point and your battery is sucking down plenty of >12v power without any external hookup.
People have had to do it for a Tesla and it's a pain in the butt because they can't open the trunk to get to it. Here's a video of James May having to do it: ruclips.net/video/NsKwMryKqRE/видео.html
nope, just any car. edit: I was wrong. An EV's 12V battery is not powerful enough to start an ICE But if ICEs weren't around one day, portable jump batteries are a thing.
@@TheElvenKeys some EVs have 220v power output though, you can connect a 4A battery charger there and soft charge the battery, it will take some more time but not a chock-type charging
What a minute, whats the point of jump starting an EV when the whole point is to get the power to a resonable level so you can drive to a charging station? How on earth can you get enough juice to be able to make it there??? WIth a gas, all you NEED is to get it jumped. then you are off and running for a much gas you have in it!
There are 2 batteries on an ev… one is your large battery that makes the car drive and the second is your 12volt which is standard in all modern cars it starts the car and keeps the minor electric features like the radio or windows… the 12 volt doesn’t have anything to do with the larger battery in the same way gas isn’t affected by a bad battery
@@breadfan9 thats usually not the case though. but you would need a 230v (or whatever is in your country) charger for the main battery though, but you can buy portable chargers for EVS as well.

Hi , great video, would a portable car jump starter ( power bank pack ) originally purchased for a 2 litre car work in this situation ?
Great question. I have been trying to research this too, I got a 2017 LEAF and want to know more about Power Bank jump starting an EV.
yep. ruclips.net/video/A4NUdNWyocM/видео.html

I don't see why it wouldn't, right? The battery just needs juice, it doesn't care if it gets said juice from another car or from a power bank.
Yes it would. Bought one recently when my 12v battery failed. Very easy to use

Had my ev 12v battery die and I'm absolutely blown away that this exact mechanism isn't used.
Seems really dumb

What's a sway bar?
Great tip even tho I don't own an EV yet also I subbed :)

This is ironic… my wife traded in her Alltrack for an ID.4. Both awesome cars.
Why would you need to keep cables once ev is running?
How much do I charge for jumping a electric car?
You forgot your jump starter cable.

Glad they did this on an ID4. Can't imagine I would ever have to do this in my Tesla...

Good luck asking for help, they'll think you're pranking them
So you need a gas or diesel car or truck to jump start an EV. Funny
