I've listened to many dozens of composers and many hundreds of pieces over the years, but Hovhaness resonates the strongest with me in this stage of my life. There is so much gold in his work, though there is some repetition and experimentation that sometimes is flat and doesn't quite work. But where it does is so elevated, soars to such heights and meanders in such spiritual-like depths, that you are gripped by his 'atonal tonality." This piece though very fine gives just an inkling. Explore and discover this truly original composer. Shiver in delight as he meanders through the Soul of Life. Discover the Gold hidden under rocks that bring ecstatic joy.
These are my favorites of Hovhaness:
-Celestial Gate - a tour de force; a trip. This piece is magnificent; beautiful, so precious
-Mysterious Mountain - first and last 5 minutes are some of the most magnificent chords I have ever heard. Mysticism personified.
-Hymn to Glacier Peak - Soaringly beautiful
-Concerto #8 - my current favorite of his. So well done. So unique.
-Loon Lake - a magnificent and yet serene nature journey
    -St. Gregory - holy
    -Alleluia and Fugue
    -Arevakal
    -Khrimian Hairig
    -Cello Concerto
    -The Spirit of the Trees
    -Christmas Symphony
    -City of Light
    -Artik
-Sonata for Trumpet and Organ (this piece)

I believe it is "tempo al feel-it-oh-so."
As a trumpet player myself I must say, it's my favorite tempo.
