I knew very little about Indonesia, except for an archipelago of more than 18,000 islands, of which more than 900 are inhabited. I had not realized that it was the 4th most populated country on earth with more than 250 million inhabitants.
Arriving in Jakarta, the capital, with an agglomeration of more than 35 million, was a shock of noise, especially scooters, the size of the buildings and even more of the incredible swarm of Indonesians always ready to smile as a sign of welcome.
There is no doubt that the Island of Java is indeed predominantly Muslim (85%), the calls to prayer resound from the countless minarets of Jakarta.
Lise, my wife, and I arrived during the end-of-year holiday period, we only meet Indonesian tourists during our visits to Jakarta and also in the rest of Java. It is true that it is the rainy season and therefore the off-peak season for Western tourists.
We visited Jakarta in the footsteps of the Indonesians. We were stared at a lot and there were many requests to take selfies with us. The museums were worth the detour, especially the National Monument Museum
We traveled by train to cross the entire island of Java from west to east. In summary, rice fields, villages and rice fields. The guided tours of the two temples Borobudur and Prambanan are fascinating, not to be missed.
The stop in Surabaya confronted us with a less culturally rich environment.
