My grandfather has been deceased since 2011 and he was a coal miner in Yorkshire, UK. I'd like to thank him for all the hard work he did for me and for everyone by being a miner. R.I.P Grandad this song is dedicated to you.
My father was a miner, born in 1901, being the eldest, he had to go down the mines to help support the family at the age of 13 years! At the age of 47 years, he had to leave with the dreaded pneumoconiosis and suffered for the rest of his life. I was born in 1934 in a family of 3, and always so proud of him. This song brings back my childhood in a mining family, of which I am proud.
As a British 83 year of age senior citizen I am forever going to remember Foster and Allen will stories in song which bring back memories for many fond and sometimes sad and help shed tears of joy instead of tears of sorrow.
My father was a coal miner in the Yorkshire pits in the 50ths and 60s and worked on the face on his hands and knees. thank God I never had to go down the mines, brilliant lyrics with meaning and song very good by foster and Allen
My eldest brother worked in the mines here in New Zealand. I think this song is special no matter where in the world our menfolk go down underground. Beautiful from Foster and Allen.
For anyone who's family we're connected to the coalmines, this song really tugs at the emotions. My two Grandfather's were killed down the mines and my father worked in them from 14yrs of age. When he retired early at 60, he had aged before his time. There was little he could after retiring, the pits had took all his strength.
En vakker og sterk sang! Jeg har arbeidet i snart 50 år som anleggs og transportarbeider. Har hatt et innholdsrikt liv. Men bøyer meg i støvet for de som for 100 år siden har fulgt samme yrkesvalg som meg! Min dypeste respekt for anleggsfolk og gruvearbeider over hele verden!
What's with a song about men working underground being sung in the first person by a woman? I'm not trying to be a dick, I just don't understand a song that's written from a male's viewpoint being sung by a woman.
Wasn't aware that F&A had done a version of this. First time I've ever heard it and I genuinely love it. But then the song is an all time favourite of mine anyway.
This song fits my grandad perfectly as he worked down the mine at a young age along with his uncle and cousin ❤️, his cousin and uncle sadly died down in the mines that they worked in 🙏😢💐
I so love this song... true to life god bless our miners who lived and died to provide fuel to keep us warm.foster and allen are legends and rita's voice fits this song to a tee.
This is a song written by the late Rita MacNeil of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. Cape Breton has had coal mines since it was French colony n the 1700's. The mines are gone now for the most part but they are part of the culture and there have always been many miners choruses.
+Mark Lewis You made Cape Breton, Nova Scotia proud... Enjoy our song world it's meant the world to us for all these years.. Look for Rita and the Miners (Men of The Deeps) singing it as well.
Next to The Dubliners, this is my favourite rendition... My Granddad worked "Down Underground" from the age of 13 till his late 50s, when he took early retirement. He started out as a 'Hooker' down Howbridge Pit (Lancashire) and ended as Pit Area Manager, for t'North Wales Coal Board, at Gresford (North East Wales).
The best version of this great song is by the woman who wrote it and sang it. Rita MacNeil from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia Canada is this singer-songwriter. It is especially magnificent when she sings it with the Men of the Deep, a male choir made up of actual miner's. An incredible rendition of this wonderful song. Very emotional, very powerful.
@@delby66 I agree. Rita's version is the first I heard and remains the best in my opinion but there are many other good versions of this song including this one.
Great Tony, I love this. Stuff this Corona Virus, I hope and pray that it will vanish and we will get back to seeing Foster and Allen on the road again!!! God Bless you both. Nr. Ireland.
Beautiful……This song almost makes me cry. The miners who worked on their bellies to hew out the coal were to me and many others real hero’s of their time. They lived in miners cottages near to the pit tiny they were, their wives would boil water and then they bathed in front on the fire in the tin bath when they came off shift. Now I believe that most of our coal is imported. So sad.
@@ralphellison8962 Hi, this a Canadian song, written by the late, great Rita MacNeil, from Big Pond, Cape Breton, Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. She was a well-known Canadian singer, who was famous for the beautiful, dark voice, her song-writing skills and her warm personality. She passed from this life far too early, but we, in her home province, will never forget how she made us feel.
If you ever get the chance lynda, look for Rita NcNeil singing this with The Men of the Deep, they're ex miners who have tremendous voices. It's quite emotional and beautiful.
Stephen Lisson it’s one of my favourite RUclips clips. I have all Rita mc Neil’s songs .As the wife of a retired coal miner I can. Really relate to the emotion she puts into this song

A brilliant rendition of Rita MacNeil's classic song. Foster and Allen are magnificent musicians.
I don't think Rita wrote the song. She just sings it well.
@@allanryan8441 I'm sorry my friend. She did write it.
She wrote it with Men of the Deep, who were miners in Nova Scotia.
