THE CHANGING RAILWAYS. Our railways are changing. The latest and last big steam engine rolls out of the sheds and over the Canterbury Plains. But steam locomotives are giving way to diesel engines and railcars, which we see working through widely varied New Zealand scenery. Modern train traffic control systems, expanding goods yards, and diesel shunt engines are speeding up rail services as the steam era is passing.
