I Barely Speak To Alexa Anymore Thanks To This TINY Button: Flic 2 Review

  • I like talking to Alexa, don't get me wrong, but sometimes a Smart Home button is just better and the flic 2 is the best yet. This tiny wireless smart home button has literally only just been released and was funded on Indiegogo and Kickstarter to create the perfect button and I flipping love it.
This video is sponsored by Flic, all opinions are my own.
You can pair the Flic 2 directly to your phone to use your droid as a hub, or you can pair your button to the Flic hub LR to control Smart Home devices without needing a phone on the network and to also allow Apple Home Kit support. The hub also gives you infrared control if you buy the separate IR accessory so that you can include your TV and AV equipment in your Flic routines.
The integrations are practically endless, but they include Philips Hue, Lifx and most importantly Apple Homekit. There are too many to list, but if your Smart Home device isn't integrated directly then you can create your own integrations using HTTP, or if you're not quite that technical then most devices can be controlled via IFTTT. I've used IFTTT to connect Flic to my Smart Life devices and the delay is only a couple of seconds. I also used HTTP to integrate my Flic hub with my Hubitat locally on my network. The software is incredibly easy to use.
Flic1 versus Flic 2: The Flic 2 has a number of improvements, but primarily they are; Better battery life (around 3 years which is twice the original), better range (up to 200 metres) and Homekit support (for the new hub). I always loved the original Flic, but the Flic 2 is now even better, and the new hub is backwards compatible so you can still use the original Flic buttons!
Flic is certainly not a cheap solution, but it is awesome. If you want something well made that just works reliably then it's totally worth your consideration.

We use Alexa all around the house for controlling a number of different devices, mainly lights and plug sockets. This works great for 4 out of 5 of our family. However, my eldest daughter has a neurological condition which means she is unable to talk so until now has been excluded from being able to switch on these devices, especially her favourite fibre optic lights or the light strip in her bedroom. However, she is the ultimate button presser!!! So we are hoping these devices are going to be ideal to help her enter our world of Alexa, and more importantly enable her to turn on/off her favourite lights. Sadly, I suspect it will be a case of on-off-on-off-on-off-on-off-on-off-on-off....... Will be interesting to see how long the battery lasts with that intensive use!

I've been using Xiaomi buttons with zigbee2mqtt for over a year. Works great, has 7 different click options rather than just 3, and they're under £10 per button, and the zigbe2mqtt hardware can be had for about £15. So loads cheaper than the flic starter kit! Bit more work because you need set up the zigbee2mqtt, but their guide is easy to follow.

One thing i would like to be added; support voor HomeAssistant (or OpenHab2). I tried contacting the makers (on deserved holliday i think) and the Home-Assistant-community to develop an integration. It looks like i have to learn myself some codewriting to make this PERFECT product combining with domotica-software...

I hope to find time soon to research this more. I'm a newbie and don't know how everything works yet. Looks like I need IFTTT. Next thing to look into for sure. Before buying a Flic I thought I would ask them this directly, I said I have an Alexa, gosund Light switches and outlets, how do I control them with a Flic? They said sorry you can't at this time. Update: Sorry...now I'm caught up on more of your videos and thanks! I choose Flic 2 and IFTTT. So cool.

I also just received version 2, they feel way better than v1. The software still seems the same to me. It has more features unlocked for Android than for IOS. I still can't control Hue scenes, it will always default to the last setting (Apple user) ... so I have to use IFTT for that, which is annoying. (slower). For the rest a great product. For the price of the HUB they could just include a USB charger and ethernet cable, I have the v1 and the v2, both only came with just a USB cable. Great video, had a good laugh again, thanks Paul!

And of course, Home Assitant supports it because we DON'T want to rely on the Internet having to be available for IFTTT.

Paul it's possible to trigger routines as the people who made the notify me skill have a virtual button service to trigger Alexa routines via IFTTT

Only in countries where the Notify Skill is available. I'm not in one of them...

I guess it was my mistake that I bought this BEFORE alexa routines are available for it. I'm not holding my breath as it took them forever to come out with homekit and made it not work on the flic 1. So I'm guessing alexa routines will be available with the 3rd version of this product. PAUL please make a video for us plebs now that IFTTT is shit.

Seems counterintuitive... I hooked up a sensor to automate a switch through Alexa/IFTTT so I don’t have to flick a light switch and now I’m pushing a button to turn on or off the light... why? And it’s $30 dollars? Why?

So Amazon echo buttons not available in UK, Flic buttons not available in UK. perhaps its a pandemic thing. Really needed some for a disabled relative. (Amazon echo buttons would be better as easier to hit) Good tech for disabled is really hard to obtain. He's got the condoms, just needs the button now!

Hey Paul, slightly off topic, assume you’ll be doing a video regarding the recent announcement about smart home tech standardisation across ‘all’ platforms? Love to hear your views on this.

I'm dubious. It sounds like a backdoor attempt by The Most Evil Corporation on Earth (Apple) to stick its foot into things and muck them up. There must be some child labor under contract currently idle with nothing to do as people flee the iEcosystem. I would love to be wrong about that though.

Another excellent video Paul ! 1 idea and 1 comment: Do you mind to give a date or numerotate the videos with same titles (easier to follow e.g. a product update). Secondly, could you do an update about the broadlink rm pro + ?

I had a strange issue with one of these new buttons. It was registering misclicks (like hold clicks as single clicks, etc), but it eventually went away. Aside from that, has anyone tried changing the Flic 2 batteries yet? I can't simply apply pressure and twist them off like the original Flics...
