  • This homily was given by Bishop Edward Scharfenberger of the Diocese of Albany on October 22, 2023 at the closing Mass of the New York State Eucharistic Congress, held at the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs in Auriesville, New York.
    The Most Rev. Edward B. Scharfenberger was appointed by Pope Francis the Bishop of Albany on February 11, 2014. He is a native of Brooklyn, and was ordained a priest on July 2, 1973. He earned a licentiate in sacred theology from the Academy of St. Alphonsus in 1977, a licentiate in Canon Law from Catholic University of America in 1980, a Juris Doctor of Law degree from Fordham University in 1990, and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1991. In the Diocese of Brooklyn, among other assignments, he served as pastor and judicial vicar. He presently serves as a Consultor to the Pontifical Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews as well as on the following committees and councils of the USCCB: National Advisory Council, Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, Administrative Committee, Committee on Priorities and Plans, and Subcommittee on the Church Africa.
