This piece will always remind me of my mum - when I go off to university it'll be weird not hearing her piano playing every evening. I don't think having a silence away from the piano is something I'll be able to deal with very well.
Yes. He does. There's something inexplicable about mvts. I and III of this Sonatine. When I listen to them, I'm always struck by their ravishing beauty (like much of Ravel). However, this Sonatine seems to possess for me some quality that makes it sound as though it were written on another planet in another solar system. A colder planet. It seems divorced from human experience, and expresses instead some kind of nonhuman sensibility. Therein lies its peculiar beauty.
This piece is like time travel for me. Every time I play it, I can't help but re-live times that once were. All the memories and emotions associated with them come back in waves. It's incredible what Ravel has done here.
Heehee yeah, always takes me back to hours and hours and hours of solitude practising this over and over and over. Never got dull... Always found some delicious soft nugget of new cordage mmmm
This piece is amazing. I can´t believe I learned this existed thanks to a Danganronpa V3´s reference. Time might pass but I´ll treasure discovering this timeless jewel. Great reason to be alive. Kaede best girl
Commenting this super late, but same. Googled the song immediately because Kaede first mentioned Gymnopedie, which is a song I’ve come to greatly love.
So good! I play the piano and I am ten and I have won a competitive piano game and when I heard somebody play this I was moved so I decided I was going to play this piece and know I am just starting!
It's crazy how Ravel uses such little material to create an entire sonata movement. The descending forth motif that presents itself at the beginning can be found almost everywhere in the movement. This is similar to what Beethoven does in his sonatas, but with a more daring harmonic language, modal change in melody and a unique texture,Ravel represents neo-classicism.
Watch the BBC tour of Rachel's house, I never knew it was possible but it made ravels glittering landscape of color infinitely personal. his spotless soul shines through me; I'll never be without a friend ever again
I listen to classical music when I study, so it's good that this game is giving me some recommendations. There were a few songs I heard before but never knew the title or who wrote them.
Tribomb_TP it’s a franchise about high school students with ultimate talents (meaning they’re the best in their field at a high school level) being trapped in a closed school and the only way to escape is if they kill each other, and when someone kills another they must not be caught so they can “graduate” or leave the school while everyone else besides them dies. If they’re caught they’re “punished” aka executed. Danganronpa v3 is the fourth game in the series and the protagonist references this piece in the beginning of the game.
It's very Debussy-like in the fact that the usage of the pentatonic scale is very obvious. I find that Ravel was a master in harmonizing the pentatonic scale to hide its characteristics instead of out-right using it like Debussy did.
Does this piece remind anyone else of Debussy? Not just similar styles, I feel like I’ve heard the melody before, either in Suite Bergamesque or I’m not sure. Perhaps I’m just confused
Does anyone know if there's an orchestrated version of this? The ending is absolutely gorgeous and I'm yearning to hear it played with orchestral color (not saying the piano doesn't do it justice on its own, though!). Ps thanks for uploading with the music- I love that feature.
+Logan Perkins there's no orchestral version of this piece, ravel only wrote it for piano, however there are a few other arrengements by other people for different instruments. if you wonder what arrangements are available for specific pieces, there's a section over on imslp.org that list all arrangements and transcriptions that are in the public domain. they also of course provide free sheet music so it's a good site to know.
+Logan Perkins The only other version I know of is one rewritten for Flute,Viola, and Harp. Though it would be interesting to hear it by an orchestra. Maybe I should orchestrate it for practice.
@@justmart4455 I don't have the tablet or the chords, can you help me? It's a piano solo not a guitar one and I'm not a musician, I'm currently learning to play the guitar
I saw a bird on his way home but then something happened; he lost his way. He came from a long journey then finally came back. This is my imagery of this piece. I wonder what Ravel had in his mind when he made this piece.
Bro I’m looking in the comments and find that people are here from Danganronpa V3, whilst I’m here to see what it sounds like so I can practice it better for piano lessons. :V

It is tough. Ask her to send you videos of her playing if possible :)
Start recording her any way you can. There will come a time, long past your college days, that you'll really regret it if you don't. Life is short.
Ravel just puts you into another world

Thibaudet is a master of French Impressionism. Every Debussy/Ravel recording of his is outstanding.

Thanks to the music of Ravel I still living on this planet.
Came from Danganronpa V3.
I'm glad I discovered such a masterpiece thanks to this game.

I LOVE RAVEL
c'est très gentil de dire cette "gentillesse "; j'aime la musique française et les romantiques allemands

Must... Learn... This... Piece...
Same.. It's sooo pretty..
Sarah Leung Just got the music... starting today!
learnt it, and it's hell to perfect, however it really is beautiful
Nathan Haronian not bad I got to play it in a recital I gave on Horowitz's piano
Nathan Haronian it gets louder but not much more difficult. Definitely easier than Fantaisie-Impromptu

So romantic, yet so melancholic.
Ravel is the one who propounded a whole new world. Not Aladdin guy.
Agreed
What.
Hahaha so true!!! A djinn only visible to the true dreamer...
First time I listened to this was in a presentation of a high school and I immediately fell in love with it :)
My favourite piece from Ravel. People seem to compare him to Debussy all the time (because Impressionism) but I just love them both.
Oof my repetwarh is comprised almost entirley of the two.
One of my all time favourite compositions, definitely favourite Ravel composition.

I love the delicacy and the slight hints at sinister activity
I didn't know it could be played so slowly and deliberately! It sounds divine.
Going to start learning this in the summer!
This piece brings me to a distant world full of nostalgia, a world that I never lived in or will ever live in.
The best we can do is live in 'this world of elegance' through the music
Why did I listen to this? Now I have to add it to my huge list of stuff to learn... haha...
My list is probably thousands of pages long and is still not going anywhere :P

Beautiful. Very Debussy-like
Ravel stands for himself. But yes, the have similarities.
I'd never say he does not! Long live the music genius, Ravel

Ha, yes, Ravel is definitely unique! But Debussy was his teacher, which is most likely why there are some stylistic similarities

my piano teacher is telling me to choose between the sonatina 1 or 3, which one should I do? They're both gorgeous
This is late, but 3 looks a LOT harder than 1. 1 is actually not that difficult if you start out really slowly!
Same thing with my piano teacher and I liked this one much more I connect with it emotionally more than I’ve ever with any song
