I agree, I grow the patula marigold every year and also the pot marigold (Calendula officinalis). Sunflowers and nasturtium also, they can serve a similar purpose and still fit an exotic theme.

So I have had some plant self-sow and appear annually in the yard, here in Southern California, for several years, since I purchased a flat and planted it. I love it but I’ve forgotten the name. Im forever confused whether it’s _Tagetes tenuifolia_ (flowers look like it) or 'threadleaf' _Coreopsis_ (aka 'whorled tickseed', I think). The coreopsis pictures look more like the foliage of mine… but since you mentioned the smell being citrusy, it dawned on me that I’ve never actually smelled this plant. 🤤 😆 lol. BRB!

You should try saving marigold seeds. I know you are a seed saver. I saved some marigold seeds from my marigolds last year and I was pleased to find even better marigold plants and flowers than last year. I am definitely saving them this year.
