Dandylion is very bitter after it starts to push up the part that flowers. We ate this every spring. Grandma called it “spring tonic” after a winter of no fresh veggies, they ate it raw like salad. (Gran was born 1857). My gran knew all the wild plants and how to harvest them. For food, medicines, and to dye her hand spun wool. This was before the current craze of homesteading. I wish I could talk to them now.

Sorry for my english but, be careful with the amounts you eat, because wild lettuce usually contains a narcotic principle (used as a natural analgesic and sedative). Also, don't pick it from places near the road, the soil is polluted and the chemicals contaminate the plants growing nearby. Also, don't pick it from parks where people step too much or dogs can "spoil" grass... You know what I mean.
Always try to wash whatever you forage. Stay safe.

I mean, you could be eating both. Young dandelion might be a little bitter but not much, it's quite palatable. There's a reason radicchio is included in a lot of salad mixes. If you're going to eat wild lettuce you want younger leaves too. Both are okay. This should be a video of canadensis against serriola (serriola is less palatable and also have more side effects than canadensis) and even then dandelions (true dandelions) are invasive and their greens are very tasty so eat more of those anyway. Included with other safe and palatable wild greens they're a great addition. Stop demonizing dandelions here because we need less of them and over harvesting is a great way to do that. 😋🥗

Why is wild lettuce better than dandelion greens? Is it just a taste preference or are there more vitamins and minerals or other nutritional qualities? Personally I love a bitter green and dandelions are some of my go-to lettuce greens!

Very interesting but why should one be eating wild lettuce rather than dandelion? Is it healthier? Does it taste better?

    • @FeralForaging

As a salad green, tastes waaay better and has a nice texture IMO. (specifically Canadian wild lettuce when young) as a tea or something else both are fine.
