Hi Reuben, I own a Yow surf skate and am considering buying a land paddling stick to practice SUP surfing turns on land. However, I have watched countless land paddling videos and have never seen anyone practicing Top Turns with that kind of stick. I am talking about the snappy top turns for which you have to quickly move the paddle across the board without switching hands. Is that because that kind of turns are risky on land on a skateboard ? By the way, I enjoy your videos. keep up the good work mate !

Hey, I see no reason why you cannot practice the whole process of the top turn including throwing the stick over your body. One problem they might have is it when you are land cuddling you are using a longer stick which will present it make it slightly harder to throw across your body, but I still did this when I was using these boards in this video. So yes I think it can be done and should be done and will really benefit your SUP surfing.
I guess also you could make a shorter stick just for doing this manoeuvre too?! Let us know how you get on, thanks for the comments and glad you're enjoying the videos. Reuben

@@SUPboardermag Hi Reuben, thanks for your advice. I finally bought a land paddling stick from ONDA directly from their website. I took an aluminium model but they also produce carbon models. I am very happy with this purchase and the quality of the material which comes with several spare parts. I am quite tall (1m85) and the paddle set to a minimum length suits me perfectly for training turns. The main difficulty I have with the frontside top turn comes from the fact that the rotation of the shoulders is opposite to the one you normally do in prone surfing (it reminds me of the layback turn in surfing, which I do not master at all !). Practicing this on a surf skate could unblock my brain... Cheers, Romain.

I have a smaller board with the same trucks is it worth it to buy a large board to better prepare myself for surfing with a fish surfboard ?

Hi , thank you for the review, excellent information as usual.
I do have a question , I sup/surf a JP fusion 10.8*34 that I really love. You did a very good review of the jp fusion as well which convinced me to buy one.
My current skills are between beginner / intermediate.
I take off easily in surf stance in hip high waves.
I do a bottom turn which is not radical enough and I cruise at 45° but too low in the wave face. So I would like to work on my carving skills.
I'm about to buy a hamboard but I hesitate between a classic and a fish...
With your experience what would you advise, which one would feel more similar to my JP ?
    Cheers
    Greg

Hey Gregory. Glad you got a JP and are getting into SUP surfing. Good question... I would say that both will help and improve your surfing for sure. The Classic will feel more like the JP I would say. The fish is quite a lively feel compared to the Classic. The Classic will also give you better walking the boards skills. Which is always better to have when using long surf SUPs.
So both will help you but the classic is probably best. Hope that helps Reuben / SUPboarder

Thank you Reuben for that quick answer. I'll go with the classic, can't wait to get it.
PS: Please continue with the channel, you are definitively the best source for SUP on youtube !

I need one of these! but the one I'm looking to purchase is a lot taller than me, could that potentially be a problem

No problems with the long ones. Just smoother and more cruisey to paddle with.

    How are they down hill

Not too bad , but you are going to have to carve all the way. They will get a speed wobble if you just go straight.
