  • A linear city sandwiched between the seas / Walk around the island village Sea of Japan Sado Island, Akadomari Ryotsu
    Sado Island
It is the largest of Japan's remote islands and one of the Seven Kingdoms of Hokuriku. It is an island with the Osado Mountains to the north and the Kosado Hills to the south, with the Kuninaka Plain in the rift valley and river terraces along the coast. The Honma clan, the guardians of the Middle Ages, built Kawarada Shishi Castle and later Mano Danfu Castle. From 1573 (Tensho 1) to 1598 (Keicho 3), the Uesugi clan ruled, and the Tokugawa clan controlled Sado Magistrate as Aikawa as a direct territory. He focused his efforts on the management of Aikawa Kanayama. It has also been an island where criminals were exiled since ancient times.
    Akadomari
Akadomari is located in the southern part of Sado. The gentle southern slopes of the Kosado Mountains approach the sea, blocking northerly winds, and the climate is mild throughout the year due to the influence of the Tsushima Warm Current. It has long been an important transportation hub connecting the mainland and Sado, and flourished as a village for Kitamaebune and Matsumae merchants, especially during the Meiji period. It is said that the ``red'' in Akadomari means ``water'' in the Ainu language, and ``tomari'' means ``port.'' Currently, it is one of the gateways to Sado, with regular shipping routes to and from Teradomari on the mainland. The town is a single town along the coastline. The form of the village is very similar to Teradomari and Izumozaki on the mainland of Niigata Prefecture. The town bends gently in the middle, but that area is the center of the city. In addition to large merchant houses, there are also Western-style townhouses with gazebos. In Niigata prefecture's coastal towns, storehouses are often covered with wooden walls due to snow, but in Akadomari you can see plaster walls exposed. Maybe it's because of the warm climate that there isn't much snow.
    Ryotsu
Ryotsu is located on the east coast of the Kuninaka Plain, which separates Osado and Kosado, the largest gateway to Sado Island. ``Tsu'' means port and comes from the fact that there were two ports, Ii and Minato, on the northeast coast of Lake Kamo. In 1868 (first year of the Meiji era), when Niigata Port was designated as one of the five major open ports, Ryotsu became its auxiliary port. Later, it developed into the prefecture's number one seafood landing port.
The town is located on a sandbank between the sea and Lake Kamo. The Minato district is a long, narrow town centered around a single street that runs through the highest point of the island, and the ferry terminal and public facilities are also located here. On the other hand, the Ishi district has a main axis extending from the Minato district and thick areas on both sides. While the main street is an arcade shopping street, the Kamo Lake side, where the fishing port is located, is a restaurant district. In Ryotsu, there was a huge fire in 1945 that destroyed 315 houses, so it is difficult to see old houses, but the old townscape can be seen in the restaurant area of the Ishi district.

    北前船の寄港地です。地元民がよく利用する地元の定食屋さんも巡ってくれるとありがたかったかな?ネットにも出ていないですけどね。
