I am an old guy but I remember my mother playing this often. She would often be overwhelmed by the task of raising 6 children on Dad's very low salary. Some times she would drop everything and go to the piano, and play this. I realize now that the fast parts expressed her frustration with all she had to do, and when the slow portion came an expression of peace came over her face. I know it saved her sanity. Unfortunately she was woren out at a young age dying at age 52. Regretfully, I was too dense to realize all that she did for us. God rest her soul!

Hey old guy! I’m right up there with you! One thing I have learned and experienced about music - particularly classical music is that listening intently or even casually heals the souls of those who listen. May the remainder of your life be healed by it! Blessings!

Mine was playing that as well almost daily in the evening after a long day of work. As a child about to find sleep, Schubert impromptus , Chopin, Bach , Brahms and Schumann works and notes were flying all over my bedroom, such a great way to go dreaming. Thank mum.

Now imagine that Beethoven had a blank piece of paper in front of him when he wrote this. Just a feeling inside him. And put THAT on a piece of paper. That's pure genius. Imagine writing THAT. Excellent performance though, I just got lost in the creation. Lost in the "chase" he obviously imagined. Tears. :)

Young lady, you have converted me (in my late years) to this beautiful music. I have never been been a big fan of classical music, but listening to the expression you put into your playing, those hands just 'owning' the keyboard, your playing reaches deep down inside and touches the very soul. Just beautiful. !!!!

Everyone else has, rightfully, commented and praised you on the first and third movements. I'd like to say you shined on the second movement. It's often ignored but I find it very uplifting after the heaviness of the first movement and good preparation for the drama of the third.

How can an earthly person write such music?

I had the privilege of going to a concert pianist's home for a social visit. He lived out on Cape Cod. It was a calm summer evening with the windows open and a slight breeze. He played Moonlight Sonata on a Steinway grand piano with the sound of the breeze through the tall grass on the beach and the soft sounds of the ocean waves in the distance. It is something I will never forget.

That is the most moving performance of the first movement I have ever experienced. I actually felt the emotion, the strength and the deepest sorrow! Your third movement is spectacular, precise and wonderful. The Yamaha has such clear tones from the bass to the treble notes, enhanced by your amazing control. When I was young I used to play piano. And this song was one of my favorits. I used to play Choppin and others too. It happened till I was 19 . Then I stoped to play and study piano because of the university. Now I´m 58 and I´m a phsycologist that love my work. But, I love piano too. And today I´m not able to read a partiture again. So SAD. I´d really love to play piano again. I think it´s still time to do it!!! Anastasia, you are great!!!

Hi Lilian. I started learning from scratch nearly 9 years ago in 2011 when I was 48. The piano has brought so much joy and happiness into my life that I don't consider ever giving up. Well, my neighbours might disagree here!
Even if as an adult one cannot learn or memorize the way children do, to me it has paid off. Definitely. I encourage you to take it up again. I think having started to play and study as a child makes you much more likely to be able to catch up, get your skills back and enjoy the piano again in less time than it would take someone who starts like I did. By the way, I studied psychology, too, but now I work as a teacher.

I am floored by Anastasia. She is brilliant in every tempo. The hyperactive director of this video came close to ruining her 3rd movement because whatever substance he was on caused him to think it wasn't exciting enough to watch
this genious perform with the speed and precision and athletic piano pounding Beethoven demands here. So, as beautiful and exciting as Ms. Huppman is to watch, try just playing the sonata with headphones on and close your eyes, or write as you listen, as I just did.
    Bravo!

I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for sharing your gift, grace, creativity, and industry with the world; thank you, thank you, a million times. Though nowhere near your level of talent, I myself am a classical pianist since childhood, my earliest recital pieces featuring Beethoven's Moonlight and Pathetique, but your passion and precision bring an energy and devotion to them I've never experienced - again, thank you. BRAVO!!!! OUTSTANDING !! Definitely this has been the best perfomance of the Sonata 14 I have ever heard in my life. Ludwig, watching your performance up from the heaven, must certainly be proud of you. You are yourself "Quasi una fantasia" in the most beautiful lyric sense. Thank you so much for the post.

Thank you, Anastasia Huppmann, for this richly sensitive performance, it truly touches the soul! And the sustain in this amazing Yamaha is almost like a pipe organ! Such a rich sound. The fingering in the Presto is really impressive! Greetings from Canada!

    Excellent performance!
I first heard this piece as a kid in grade school some 60+ years ago. I have always thought the first movement a bit much, I guess it's the 'Moonlight' part. The moonlight is gone, however, with the 2nd and 3rd movements. Perhaps these upbeat movements introduce the always promising dawn of a new day; Vigor, excitement, interest, challenge!

I've just recently started learning the 3rd movement. This is by far the most ambitious undertaking I've ever attempted and will take me quite a long time to master it! I've been watching a lot of videos of this piece and this is by far my favorite! I've not seen the emotion, style, and interpretation from anyone else that Anastasia puts into this performance! Thank you, Anastasia!

@@dez6345 I got about a third of it down pretty well. I practiced a lot when I was working from home. Now that I go to the office each day, my practice time has dwindled. But I keep chipping away at it. I really enjoy playing it. I can play the 1st mvt and have been working a little on the 2nd mvt. Thanks for asking!

You have such a sympathy for Beethoven Anastasia. Like silvery moonlight on the surface of a tremulous lake the music has a hypnotic beauty. We gradually move through the disturbance of gentle breezes to, by the third, a tempestuous and storming finale. Beautifully played and interpreted.

Thanks so much for your explanation of Beethoven's stunning sonata. I have been learning this piece to play from memory but wasn't sure I was i it correctly, was my tempo correct, my articulation, my rubato etc but now I have listened to your video I feel so excited to play it as a fantasy, much more in keeping with how Beethoven wanted it to be played, and add much more of me, my mood and feeling each time I play it, and really connect to every nuance. Thank you so much Lorraine

The music score should be a memory aid. Real musicians play without the sheet music.
