As you discuss, designating if you are looking at interior or exterior angles in a triangle is important. The book example is a little relaxed in its reason statement. Good teaching.

Sorry, you inverse the operation. So if the 40 was added on the one side, you Do the opposite operation, subtracting 40 then on both sides.
