  • Established in 1908, the McVitie's Factory in Harlesden is Europe's largest biscuit factory by volume. Everyday up to 13 million Chocolate Digestives and 12.5 million Digestives are produced on site. Over the past 100 years the factory has evolved - there is greater automation and less staff. At one point in the 1950s as much as 3,000 people worked on site. Today, the figure is around 500. Come with us on a behind-the-scenes tour of the factory and see how some of your favourite biscuits are made.

    Querry, Why are they called "Digestives"? Don't most cookies, as we in the US call them, digest?

    • @azog23
      @azog23 6 лет назад +15

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digestive_biscuit says when they were invented back in 1839 they were thought to be good for the digestive system because they had bicarbonate of soda in them.

    • @TheBigBigBlues
      @TheBigBigBlues 6 лет назад

      Digestive biscuits were first developed to help aid digestion, hence the name. They are quite different in consistency compared to cookies which are usually soft, this is because biscuits are baked twice which is where the name biscuit comes from, it literally means 'baked twice' (in latin).

    The story of the digestive's creation is really confusing. It was first 'invented' in 1839 by Scottish scientists in Logie Steading in Forres. The mcvities creator, Alexander grant, was born in Forres 25 years later in 1864. He then went on to 'invent' the digestive with mcvities in 1892. He then bought Logie Steading in 1933 and was a benefactor to the town. Confusing
