      when I have called 911 I got this kind of run around, when you don't have specifics that the operators can relay to emergency services they just keep repeating questions you can't answer. maybe its a florida thing. before cell phones i was alerted to a woman that fell behind the building, that was all the information i had, and they made me go out and around the building and look at her before they would send police, and she died somewhere during all of it.

    Since a lot of people are asking the same question, I'll clarify because I've been following the Surfside situation closely. These are 911 calls from the people who were lucky enough to be in the remaining tower (west). They are fine (physically). The collapse of the east and the middle sections had already happened by the time of these calls. Everyone in units ending in 05-09 survived. Units ending in 04 were split (sheared off). The rest fell. In the towers that collapsed, only 3 people (and 1 cat) survived the actual collapse, ie, were on an upper level and in a portion that collapsed. (The Gonzalez mom and daughter, the Handler boy, and Binx the cat, who was found later.) An additional few (4-5?) people made it out before the collapse because they were awoken by the noise. But not many...Oh, and I forgot, there was that other woman who did survive the collapse and was trapped in the rubble, talking with rescuers through the rubble for hours after the collapse. But they were unable to rescue her... 😢

      @UC5CZ3dtZIVbi6bKRzcZgkcg actually it WAS 2, nearly 3 hrs. But they needed machinery that could hold walls up while rubble was removed.
      Firemen, and rescuers stayed and kept her talking, but by the time the machinery arrived, and things were able to be moved she stopped talking minutes after rubble started being removed.
      It was well longer than a few mins. Smh
      The news covered it, filmed the whole event.
      Im sure many could've been saved, but events on this scale are a rarity so the tools and machines, lifts, etc. Needed for this rescue weren't readily available.
      It took time to get what was needed, and the number needed to the area, and to the rescuers.
      Ppl alive in that rubble didn't have that much time sadly. 😥

      @limelight81 eh...
      911 is dialed when there is an emergency which often creates a high intensity/pressure environment that would require the need for law enforcement, fire fighters, and paramedics.
      When you have multiple calls all being connected to 1 area with messages like "something just collapsed," or "there are people trapped in the building," or "please help, i heard something like an earthquake" or things of that nature regarding the state of the situation, it is LITERALLY the 911 operator's job to keep the caller on the line by whichever means necessary, even if that means "yes, please do alright, you have nothing to fear, we have many people on the scene" and etc. They don't have to make it lengthy.
      While the 911 operators tried their best, I think they could've done better in reducing panic and directing people on what to do knowing the information they had.

      They have to be robotic in order to do their jobs! I was a 911 dispatcher for 5 years. That job is not for the faint of heart hence why I only lasted 5 years! As a 911 dispatcher you have to gather as much information from the caller as possible to relate to the emergency responders simultaneously as you’re speaking with the caller. So you’re communicating with several depts, and people at the same time. While you’re typing and looking up maps and deciding which officer to send on the call! Multitasking to the extreme. Dispatchers might come across as cold & uncaring but they have to disconnect emotionally from the situation in order the keep a clear head and do their job. When you’re talking to someone who is panicked and in a heightened emotional state as a dispatcher you have to remain calm otherwise everyone panics and it’s leads a chaotic situation. @Randomadventureswithpaul 3 года назад +14

      @@notverynotoriousg5674 That's not how 911 works, emergency rescue is automatically rolled police/fire/ambulance. The reason they try to extrapolate specific facts is they need to know how much resources need to be directed and they need to confirm your location so that first responders aren't wandering around confused, or showing up short handed. or not at all due to wrong location data on what is commonly a cellphone used to call 911.

    • @Got2Bespoke
      @Got2Bespoke 3 года назад +7

      @@Randomadventureswithpaul You’re right. I was a certified medical (EMD) and fire (EFD) dispatch operator (as well as an EMT). These mostly sound like police dispatch, but when there are more than two people on the phone, it’s likely police and medical/fire rescue. If it’s a medical emergency, within the first question or so, medical dispatchers have a system which allows us to quickly categorize the type of emergency so we know what type of help to send (an advanced life support ambulance w/paramedics or critical care technician vs. a basic life support ambulance with an EMT and this is so we can most effectively and efficiently handle calls. The reason for this is If you have a broken arm, you probably don’t need advanced life support and sending them would be unnecessary and possibly prevent them from being dispatched to another call which requires that help). The same goes for fire/rescue.
      Depending on where you live, you may have different numbers of dispatchers. The more dispatchers you have the quicker the process is. I’m located on Eastern Long Island in NY and our county dispatch has people taking calls and separate people dispatching them so the dispatches can go out to the departments while the original call taker stays on the phone with the caller. When you call 911 up here and in many/most non-rural areas, you’re most likely to get a police dispatcher on the line first and they’re going to quickly transfer you to the appropriate dispatch as medical and fire dispatchers are trained to identify the type of emergency and provide help over the line before help arrives in person. However, the police dispatcher usually stays on the line just in case other assistance is needed.

    It was the middle of the night, dark, no one knew what was going on. People are calling panicked. In the first calls, the 911 operators are trying to figure out what happened. In the later calls, they have a vague idea of what happened, so they are not asking questions but the advice varies, get out, stay there. By the very last call, when the operator tells them get out of the building and keep walking away, she has a much better idea of what happened. Also, operators need facts, as fast as possible, so they can get help to the caller, that's why they respond with calm or abrupt responses. Once people are physically safe, then you can take the time to be compassionate. It is so easy to judge when you have all the facts and aren't in the middle of the crisis.

    • @VlaunBurtlecraft
      @VlaunBurtlecraft 3 года назад +6

      Exactly. A ton of emergency calls comes in at once in the middle of the night about something catastrophic that occurred. The operators have no clear idea what exactly happened or even what kind of building this event occurred at. Their response makes sense - they have to be curt so that they can get the important information quickly to send out the appropriate emergency response in a promptly manner and to try to get the people to safety as soon as possible. Time is of the essence. A second is all it takes between life and death.

    To understand these calls, 911 was first called to report the collapse of a parking garage. At this point there were no injuries and the dispatchers understood it to be only a minor problem. A few minutes later the entire building collapsed. That is when 911 was flooded with a bunch of calls from the same address. At first the dispatchers thought they were calling in about the earlier collapse of the garage. Because of all the dust and smoke none of the witnesses could tell the dispatchers what was going on. It took them a bit of time reassess the situation. It wasn't until the a few minutes after the collapse that the gravity of the situation had become apparent. This is when the first policeman on the scene described it as being "like the trade center" and told them to dispatch all units and activate the disaster response teams.

    Please know that the 911 operators are under a lot of stress akin to a military operation and keeping very calm, even the ones most commenters are perceiving as "rude". They are literally taking notes on every call to triage cases and people in need by their apartment numbers and position at the scene. Once they have the information and can determine if the caller is in immediate danger or just a perimeter bystandard, they need to clear the phone lines for the next call. All these notes are read by the dispatchers to get the right services to the right area of the scene. The 911 operators are not therapist. They did their core job very well. For comparison go listen to military radio samples of the line chatter after an attack. The point is to gather the information, assess the need of each person's call in and send the right forces and/or aid to the right location.
    In short, feelings are not as important as saving a life. Fixing blood shed before fixing tears shed.

But not many...

They are there to get as much information as possible so it can be relayed to responding firefighters, paramedics, etc. They often have to be assertive and guide the conversation to where it needs to go. People tend to forget it's a call center, and there are many other callers they need to get to. They can't stay on the line with someone who is across the street baffled at what they are seeing and not really communicating anything useful to the 911 operator, when someone from inside the rubble could be calling with vital location information.

      Yes and they did none of this , there is a way to do the correct thing ..... it was the tone , that was all wrong , there is a difference .

      @@raffaellavitiello1762 Seconds count when it comes to saving lives, and all so many of you people care about is "tone". Those 911 operators are doing their job. They are trying to keep people safe and send appropriate help in a timely manner. Their "tone" is about keeping control of the conversation, and getting information from a potentially panicked/hysterical/confused caller. They are trained like this for a reason. Their goal isn't to make you like them. They aren't doing this for you.

    Trying to give grace to the operators who sound curt and impatient. It is hard to listen to how they respond. Guessing they were overwhelmed? Appreciated the lady who asked the man to get away with his family because she wanted them to be okay.

      Yeah ,that operator seemed well-trained, but some of the others could use lessons in how to talk to people who are in a dire situation.

    I feel for these 911 Operators as well.
    I know they sound gruff and uncaring, but, they are trained to gather facts and remain in control of the situation.
    I recently (three months ago) had the experience of watching my husband go into deep, deep distress and he was near death when help arrived. Once ambulance service pulled up and got out to assist, the lead paramedic began by asking my husband questions,... but he was unable to answer her. I began answering for him....she stopped and looked at me and said, "I need him to answer". I remember thinking how cold, callus and uncaring she seemed. And yet, once it was all over, and we were at the hospital and the "emergency response" was no longer needed, she turned into the most wonderful, loving, caring person and was hugging me and kissing my husbands forehead as he thanked her for saving his life. She was so ecstatic to have seen a "good" outcome and we all knew she'd for certain "saved a life". I now have a much greater appreciation of emergency responders and I am very quick to get out-of-the-way when i hear sirens... as I know what they do is far more important than the general population realizes.

      many people don't understand what happens in crisis. the brain stops thinking basically. the operators have to fight against the part of the brain that goes into fight or flight response in the caller. they must use firm and clear speech. it's not a time for sympathy, it's a time for control and factual communication.

    My mother told me that I wouldn’t make a very good dispatcher. I get far too emotional in situations like this. These operators sound way too nonchalant for me.
