Why Did China Accept Defeat to Vietnam in the 1979 Sino-Vietnamese Border War? | CDTeam - Why?
It was the late 1970s, and you were Vietnam. You had just endured over 100 years of grueling warfare: fighting the French, resisting the Japanese, then fighting the French again, followed by the fight against the United States and the Republic of Vietnam. Finally, in 1975, you successfully reunified the S-shaped land.
Now, you wanted to recover after being exhausted from war, and you began seeking international relationships to cooperate and develop together. But your allies were too far away. You thought of the saying "Buy from neighbors, not strangers," and you started looking for friends nearby.
You turned east, but there was the sea. You turned west. You had Laos, which had also been heavily damaged by war. If Laos didn't ask for your help, what could you expect from them? You turned south. Oh no, they were ASEAN, an organization established to counter communism.
To the southwest, you had Cambodia, once your comrades in arms against the United States to save the country. But in Cambodia, there was a tyrant killing your people, and you had to go and deal with him.
You were left with the north. Oh, there was China, the elder brother of the socialist bloc. This neighbor had helped you a lot in the war against the United States, and you had sworn brotherhood with each other. You hoped this would be a relationship to develop together.
Then one day in February 1979, that neighbor suddenly sent troops to attack you.
