  • Roughly a year ago I reviewed a mattress from a company called DOD Outdoors, it was a memory foam like pad that I liked a lot but the price was VERY high.
Fast forwarding to today, I have come across a pad that is very similar - one that is impressively inexpensive and also comfortable.
The DOD Outdoors pad was the Soto Small size and the product that I am reviewing today is the Skyemac Sleeping Pad.
The DOD pad at the time I reviewed it was $300, currently on sale for $280 on Amazon - the Skyemac Pad at the time of filming is only $75 with the $15 off coupon that is on amazon.
This Mattress for the money is crazy good!

    Summary :
Just as I have done with the DOD pad, I’ve really grown to love this Mattress. It’s on par with the DOD pad as far as comfort goes; it’s very comfortable and that applies to the double version as well. I have that pad as well which I use at my son’s apartment, my wife and I sleep on it and we both agree, we both are very, very comfortable.
If you’re looking for a versatile mattress, I would recommend taking a look at this…..the price is mind blowing and for money, it’s very comfortable as well as adaptable.

    Comparing :
The Skyemac pad is slightly shorter, slightly less wide, has the same thickness.
The Skyemac pad is a lot lighter in terms of weight and significantly less expensive.

It looks like Skyemac has raised the price of this mattress to $120. Even at that price it is a great deal less than the DOD version.
I'm interested in hearing your thoughts everyone.

Awesome review and providing an alternative to the DOD product, Luke. I bought a similar mattress earlier this year on Amazon from the Lost Horizon brand for $100 and used it for the first time in March sleeping in the back of my 4Runner. I didn't expect the temps to drop so much and to wake up to a snow dump but I slept through it all uninterrupted and warm with the mattress combined with my Sea to Summit BC3 sleeping bag. I even had a flannel inner liner just in case for extra warmth if I found myself waking up cold in the middle of the night but didn't need it at all. The Amazon description lists a supposed 11.8 R-value for my mattress.

I purchased the Skyemac off Amazon for $109. I tried it out in my living room the night I received it. Unbelievably comfortable. I am twice your weight and either on my back or my side, i did not feel the surface that I was laying on. Can’t wait to get it into the cold and see how it performs in the cold.

I got myself a very similar one from the UK company Outwell. Originally for motorcycle camping. But as I have to ditch my top case for this, I decided to go for something that is just slightly narrower, but packs way smaller. So sadly, no comfy memory foam inlay on my bike.
However, this mattress is very unique. It is, so to speak, two mattresses sandwiched together. So you can adjust the comfort exactly to your liking. It is not very heavy, but bulky (so car camping only). It largely inflates itself. The very last few bits of air have to be put in by yourself. The two valves are designed in such a way that air can be let out either fully, or gradually. 12 cm height is also very nice.
Really love this thing. The about 170 Euros are okay for it IMO. I found a matching stretcher (also 90 cm wide, just like my bed at home), sleep is literally just like at home.

Will be watching for your updated review of this down the line. As I got older I switched to a cowboy bedroll with an air mattress versus a ground pad and sleeping bag when I retired from running sled dogs and also began overnight hiking less, overlanding/base camping more where weight and carry size was a far lesser issue. A reasonably priced memory foam inflatable like this that would up the comfort level beyond just a regular air mattress is right up my alley and will be curious as to your observations how it does in temperatures below 50°. Thanks for all the work you do!

  • @brucefsanders

Hi Luke, just a quick comment on your method of rolling these memory foam mattresses. I have had a similar exped model and I believe my method of rolling is more effective than the method that you demonstrate. The valve can be rotated to air in but not out or air out but not in. In the second position the air leaves the mat but cannot return due to the one way valve. Instead of attempting to roll up a mat from the bottom in one process, during which the mat fights back using the memory foam, trying to reinflate the mattress. Set the valves to out only. Loosely fold the mattress up from the bottom in 3 or 4 folds and learn on the mattress in this position. This will remove the majority of the air and the one way valve will stop the mattress from reinflating. Then unroll and starting from the bottom, rolling toward the value end. Most of the air is already out, so this second step allows you to roll the Matt tighter with less effort as most of the air is already removed. You can now roll in the same manner as you have demonstrated but with much less resistance from the Matt and the memory foam. This will produce a much tighter smaller pack size. Another significant hint provided by the manufacturer is Do Not store the Matt in the rolled position for long periods of time as the memory foam will lose its memory. If you must store it rolled up, the manufacturer suggests that you allow it to reconstitute back to original dimensions for 2 days prior to travel. This will allow the mattress to fluff up and improve the self inflating character when used at camp. No more waiting for a long period for the memory foam to reinflate fully.

I purchased the LOSTHORIZON twin mattress of this type and have no complaints. 4.5 thick, 75x38 R13. I did not feel any cold creep in a tent at 38F this fall. $135 at time of purchase from amazon. I did purchase a cheap battery operated inflater/deflator from walmart and that made rolling this mattress type up much easier.

I have a different brand, similar style. Love it. The price was around 175, then came down to 140 on sale, so finally bought it. The Hikenture (Amazon) with R 9.5. Single size is $120, regular price. Usually I am cold, especially on an air mattress unless I put a wool blanket down. This was great.

  • @itchydragon
    @itchydragon 9 месяцев назад +1

$300 for one of these is just outrageous. Which is why I didn't purchase the DOD back when I was in the market for a nice 4" pad. I went with the Hikenture 4" sleeping pad with a 9.5R value on Amazon. It is similar to this skyemac one. I've used it only 2 times since I bought it but it seems to be a really good value at around $125. I use it in my tent on a Onetigris cot. It's comfortable and uses the same style of valve for inflation. Comes in 3 different colors, with an inflation sack and that's about it really. Winter is upon us and hopefully I can get out and test the 9.5R value. It also comes in 2 sizes, regular and a double. Thanks for the review.

So much better than the 0.50” foam pad I used to use back in the day. Probably why I have six bulging discs in my spine now. Actually, the disc damage is from the work I used to do, but I’m sure sleeping on the ground with a half inch foam pad didn’t help. 😅

  • @Advokat_
    @Advokat_ 10 месяцев назад +3

Open cell foam, not memory foam in the DoD. Memory foam is quite a bit heavier. It just feels like memory foam when inflated. Better quality/functioning valves on the DoD. Packed weight and dimensions not a big deal for this sort of product. I transport mine in my roof rack. Not like you're carrying it into the backcountry. I am a very cold sleeper and usually need two sleeping bags and two wool blankets. This year on my DoD mattress I only used my OneTigris summer quilt and nothing else (spring/summer). There are plenty of options out there for this type of mattress now. It's good to have choices. If you're willing to spend the money (and are 6'2" like my husband) you won't regret buying the DoD.

Great video as usual Luke😀. By the way FYI Dod cost a lot more in US not sure why, on Dod Japanese site here in Japan the biggest version with extras (CM3-651-TN SOTONE NO KIWAMI (L) with pillow and cover sheet) marked as 3 person mattress is listed for 30000 yen that is 200 USD. So for a comparison the S size no extras (CM1-941-TN SOTONE NO KIWAMI AIR (S)), single person, is listed as 17600 yen that is 118 USD so it is not far from the Skyemac. You probably are paying a lot more for the import taxes, etc etc.

Nice review Luke. While both of these mattresses seem nice, it would seem that even at $128, (Amazon US has it for $8.00 off to make it $120), the Skyemac is still less than half the $300 cost of the DOD. Provided that materials and QC are similar, my only reservation to buying the Skyemac would be the R value. It would be a smart move on Skyemac’s site to list this (And by appropriate standards). Knowing what conditions one can take this mattress out into would help many in figuring out what works for an end user’s specific needs. Minus these caveats, it’s really a no brainer !!!

I just picked up this sleeping pad after a rough couple nights sleeping on the Big Agnes Rapide SL insulated pad. I thought that pad would be comfy after reading all the reviews, not to mention the price of it, but boy was it not for me as a back sleeper. Amazon now says that the Skyemac pad has an R rating of 13! I'm skeptical since the DOD pad is only rated at R8.5 if I remember right. Either way, if it is only at around 8, it should be plenty warm with the military issue MSS I use. Thanks as always for the heads up on another great product!

Sea to Summit Camp Plus is a great alternative for $100 its a little smaller, 25" wide 3" thick so can fit 2 of them side by side in a smaller tent. 4.3r-value. It also packs down smaller if you don't have a lot of room. Would probably handle a side sleeper up to 175lbs without feeling the ground.

Both still expensive for what they are. Take a lot of much needed space when car camping and harder to roll up and put into a bag than airbeds. Airbeds are the go to as they are much lighter and take up so little space and with the right additional product can easily block a cold ground effecting air temp in an airbed.

While I wasn’t able to pull up the Skyemac pad, I did see some similar for about 150, but who knows if they are worth the same?

My favorite one is the sea to summit self inflating/quasi memory foam pad. (Comfort Plus SI) Just did a canada wide camping hiking trip and it was so nice, totally perfect sleeps.

One thing lots of folks who have never been camping can understand? If ya can't sleep well, then the adventure can become sort of a nightmare. Your body weight compresses your sleeping bag down to nothing truly insulative. Ya might not find sleeping pads very sexy to shop for, but having a good one... when you truly NEED one.... makes a huge difference. Getting you up off the ground is important enough in ANY season, but in winter it REALLY matters.

Looks like your review increased the popularity of this product and Amazon has jacked the price up to $128 with only an $8 coupon. The large size is $199. Oh well, still not too bad but I'll keep watching for the prices to come back down.

Great review but personally I would not purchase either simply because of the weight and bulk like you said if your working right out of the truck weight and bulk are not an issue

Could you do like a top 10/tier list style countdown of your favorite tents or other gear you recommend or use. All "top 10 tents" videos are made by damn near ai generated channels that have not even tested the product

PUHHHLEASE REVIEW THE EXPED MEGA MAT MAX!!!! I’d rather sleep on it than my bed. It is out of this world. Please, Luke!! Dying to see your take on it.

REI had the Exped MegaMat on sale, so I picked one up but haven't used it yet. It has the advantage of being lighter, at only 4 pounds 9 oz for the regular. But it isn't a whole lot cheaper than the DOD Soto.

@@marknelson1255 mine was 350 bucks! Not cheap but really worth it for a good nights sleep! The mega mat max is the thicker version

Right in the area where it's inflated a large bubble area is forming, so the rest of the air doesn't go to the rest of the mattress. Defect, or am I doing something wrong? Does this company have any customer service or email?

I've seen ads for this "Baerskin" hoody a million times, it looks a cheap drop shipped piece of... merchandise, and the ads are infuriatingly patronizing about it. I'm not sure if it's been on your radar, but I think it could make an amusing review.

an idea for your videos about gear, why don't you suggest different sets for certain cost buckets? Like your best for under 200$ / the best for under 500$ and so on.

I paid $199 for a 50×80×3 king camp air/foam mattress for my GFC super lite rrt.
And $109 for a 30×80×3 air/foam mattress for my Teton Quick tent/cot combo. They work great and are packaged in the same fashion as that DOD. If I ever have to replace one of them, this mattress will fit the bill nicely thanks for the info. I'm also about to pull the trigger on that BSR folding double burner camp stove you showcased.
