    I served at that base in the late 80s early 90s. Alpha company, the hanger with the big blue doors briefly shown. 23rd task force.
    A 67 tango Blackhawk crew chief.
    This video moves me beyond words. Your words upon leaving the gate for the final time, strikes home to the heart .
    Thank you for the upload and for sharing memories we can relate to that that know and remember our all but forgotten infamous airfield in Germany.

    As an Army BRAT this will always be as close to a Hometown as I'll ever get. I was here from 1985 to 1992. It breaks my heart to see it so badly neglected.

    I was there in 1983, our shop was out on the far side of the airfield. I remember guarding the ammo dump, if the old german guy wanted to bring his sheep in to graze we had to unlock the gate and let him in. Lived at the Ochsen guesthouse in town for 3 months. The best veal cordon bleu anywhere.

    It actually was a nice small community and Leighton Barracks was only what 15-20 minutes away. I in some respects miss the good times we had there, when you're young you don't realize when you have a good. Also just experience of living in Germany from 88-92 was priceless.

    was there '88 to 91... guard duty, NCO club under that stone building where the PX was... didn't know I was living such a formative part of my life at the time. Its weird watching this video and looking at buildings that were looking so old but my memory has them live and vibrant. When did I get old...

    Was there in 78-78 B Co 3 rd Avn Bn Cbt. we worked in the old WWII hanger before they built the new ones. We were in old wooden Air Force barracks at first before they built us a new building. We opened the EM club when they built that. Sad to see how much the US spent building it up just to walk away from it. We were the only aviation company then, besides us there was only an air defense Hawk missile site and and a company of air defense artillery guys.

    It sure is strange seeing the bases all closed up. I started out at Conn Barracks in Schweinfurt, then we transferred down to Giebelstadt. I was with the 13th AHB in the 80's, it was a nice airfield, but not much around it. I visited Conn last August when I was there, it's a closed up ghost town now.

      +Darrell Rector I was there 1975 in the 3/67, C Battery then HHC. Lived first in "the Ghetto" then the big HHC barracks. Loved it! Did you get put on guard duty with your M-16A1 but issued no ammo except for CV Park like we did? Anyone wanting to chat more, I have a friend, Oliver Stahl who works there as an EMT. He lives in Frickenhausen. He has one of those "drones" with a camera and sends me aerial views from above where access is denied. Place completely changed since 1975. +g When I got transferred there from beautiful Fort Sill, Oklahoma (14th Aviation battalion; rotary wing) I thought I'd been sent to an insane asylum! Found out soon it was true! The place was a dump, hundreds of army boots hanging from every tree and wire with obscenities painted on the soles with white shoe polish, guard duty for a week every month (issued no ammo for our M-16!) I mean, it was NUTS! As far as I recall there was only one hanger (#2) Would you do me a favor? Get me at daviddaveinternational@gmail.com I wrote a book (unpublished) that goes into a bit more detail about my stay. I hope to hear from you soon, Bro!

      Gary Williamson See you there, Giebel People!

    • @47485ksc
      @47485ksc 8 лет назад

      Gary Williamson Captain Richard D. Allen, one of my CO's at Giebelstadt did not "lead by example". He seemed to have some sort of death wish which must have included being "fragged". I went to the base commander to complain. After my spiel, all he had to say was: "Is that all, private?" I own and read dozens of books on the US military's involvement in the Vietnam war and can only wonder why some of these Vietnam-era brass-asses at Giebelstadt acted the way they did. They seemed to not care that us lowly "crumb toters" has zero respect for them and would rather see them dead. Gee, I wonder why? It's no wonder I'd have my own personal WWII bomb crater off in the woods behind "the ghetto" as my own "foxhole" for starting a tiny bonfire, to sit and smoke my "crumb" drink my grape soda, enjoy a Kool cigarette and ponder my situation. I really miss those times even if being led by brass pigs interested in only fucking with us. At least all of us "soldiers" looked out for each other.
