You are an amazing teacher. Thank you for these videos. I am a homeschooling mom. I am using all of your tips and tricks with writing. I didn't even realize it was possible to teach k-2 to write. As an aspiring author, I am so excited to
start my kids on their writing journey

Love your videos! They are very informative with great ideas. What I really love is they are short and to the point. 15-20 minutes is plenty. Great!

Thank you so much for sharing your tips and tricks! I am in a children’s literature class in college and my teacher wants us to create a wordless book. I had no clue where to start so this helped me a ton!

HI! I also love your videos. I am intrigued by this one. It seems to me like that is a lot to do in just a few days as the first lessons of writing stories. What would your Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, etc. look like? How do you feel about introducing one way at a time (i.e. to inform) and revisiting this model as you introduce other ways?

Ahh! Great question! So in a kindergarten or 1st grade classroom, I would generally spread this unit over 2-3 weeks! Day 1 would be to introduce and let students explore wordless books. Day 2 is "we can share what we know through informative illustrations" so I would model, then students would draw an informative illustration. Day 3 students would add labels to that illustration. Day 4 students would be introduced to sharing a story through an illustration, Day 5 they would add emotions. Day 6 would be to make up fictional stories. Day 7 would be to add background details. Day 8 would be to dictate the story, Day 9 publish, and Day 10 for sharing.
Those are the 10 main lessons I teach, but this unit is largely exploratory - meaning we focus on sketching to get ideas across - not spending too much time focusing on coloring the illustrations in, etc. This mini-unit is one I use towards the beginning of the year just to get students comfortable drawing pictures and sharing ideas! Of course, if students need more time to do something on any certain day, we pick it up the next day! I also always have a minimum of 45 minutes per day dedicated to writing! I hope that helps :)

Do you think it would be confusing to tell the students the pictures tell the story...when in reading we try to not have use pictures to help with the story?
