    I used to do this as a kid in order to build play houses, we would use the pure egg shell as mortar and mix it with ashes, fine broken rocks and soap for the bricks, it worked great! And whenever we accidentally broke a “brick” we used it as chalk to write on the walls.

  • @pacman836

    concrete in construction has a 28 day cure time before its used to take any load, I would imagine this is similar to that so if you try this again perhaps give it the time to fully cure

    There’s a thin layer of membrane (read: protein) on the inner part of the shell. Usually when I burn them outdoors, I fan the dried membranes out, leaving only the shells in the pot.
    It’s possible that the protein decomposed into pure carbon and then sintered into those small “nuggets”. That’s my guess anyway...

    For cleaner results, try finding a large ceramic crucible instead of the graphite one. When I was casting jewelry, I first began using a graphite crucible. It left a lot of imperfections in the jewelry and the graphite crucible would deteriorate rapidly. Then I came across a large ceramic one, that improved my results and the crucible lasted much longer.

    Cleaned and dry egg shell may have worked better, heated for a shorter time. (sea shells are thicker) Drying and fluffing the slaked lime before mixing could help. What do you think?

    • @jiszmo6668
      @jiszmo6668 2 года назад

      Probably true about the egg residue, and a clean kiln. 🤣🤣 They were missing 1 important ingredient, which was volcanic ash. There is some chemical in there, that makes it harden, when combined with the quick lime.

    In the 2002 movie clockstoppers they used paintballs filled with liquid nitrogen to slow the people with the time watches, I know the watches is pure sci-fi but I'm curious if you can actually remove the paint from paintballs like they did and then fill them with liquid nitrogen if they would actually hold the nitrogen without leaking out, if you could actually fire them, if they would be able to cool things down, and if you could store them for any period of time like they did in the movie.

    You need a hardening substance for it to become mortar because we use lime and sand in our masonry class as trainer mortar. It does get hard but also it breaks fairly easily and scrapes off bricks so we can keep reusing it.

    • @jiszmo6668
      @jiszmo6668 2 года назад

      The substance they need is volcanic ash. Then it would be cement/ concrete. Concrete usually has small stones added. But it's the volcanic ash that is the missing ingredient. Otherwise it is just mortar, which is what they made, and isn't very strong. I only know this because I've been watching other videos of the technique all day, which is how I found this one. lol

    You should try using hardwood ash. Soak the ash in water to separate the charcoal and dissolve the potassium carbonate. The stuff that settles to the bottom should be calcium carbonate.

  • @MrChainsawAardvark
    @MrChainsawAardvark 5 лет назад +7

    Technically calcium is a metal - so you may have turned the calcium-carbonate into pure carbon and metal.

    • @VoltisArt
      @VoltisArt 5 лет назад +2

      The high temp (840C / 1544F) makes carbon dioxide gas and calcium oxide solids, the white stuff. Other processes (electrolysis) are required to get pure calcium, which is not found in nature, because it quickly reabsorbs oxygen. All the other stuff was leftovers from previous burns.

    Mortar is most commonly used to adhere two pieces of stone together. You guys should try this again with a clean or new crucible and see how well it adheres two bricks together. It would be interesting to see if it holds up better if used this way. You could even compare it with store bought mortar.

      Firing this material in a kiln actually resets it to brittle calcium oxide again. This is how plaster of Paris can be recycled.

    sitting to cure takes basically 2-3 days BUT low and slow to semi medium heat will take the moisture out better and cause hardening better......my g-pa use to be a brick layer and he made my first brick play house 20 yrs ago and i still have one of his homemade bricks from it when i moved....he taught me that trick

    Try compression strength in lieu of snapping them as grout and mortar will always snap like that as it is not intended to be strong in the direction but more or less for filling voids and having high compressive strength.

    Inner membrane and egg white where also in the mix. The black powder was most likely from those parts of the egg.
