Hey I just wanted to say you are a phenomenal teacher, please don't stop teaching. I was scared stiff the first week of my structural class and you just eased it 80%. Greetings from Texas ;D
The last method freaks me out. How the hell I haven't learned it up to now:( Thanks man we appreciate your effort, you keep broading our horizons. Salute from Turkey!
Hi Mary, thanks for your question! We have the equation tan(delta) = 0.43114. To solve for delta, you have to apply the inverse tangent (aka tan^(-1)) to both sides. The inverse tangent of 0.43114 is 23.3 degrees. Also, while doing all these calculations, make sure your calculator is in degrees and not radians. Hope this helps!
Hey , I've been trying to solve some problems from the book you referred to in your video and need to verify the answers. The answers are not in the book, do you know where to find them?
When we are looking for particular bedding layers, sometimes they are important for us. For example, you might be looking for a bedding of coal. Knowing the attitude of such a layer is really important if we are going to drill for it.
I plan on making videos about this at some point, but unfortunately, it likely will not be done anytime soon. I am a PhD student now, and it is very difficult to find the time to make these kinds of videos.
The book that I used when I was taking this class was "Structural Geology" by Haakon Fossen. That is the only book that I have exposure to, so unfortunately I can't give any opinion on the 'best' book, but this one was satisfactory to get me through the course. Hope that helps!
Hi Zuyun, I've been in the process of making structural geology videos over the course of the past two summers, but often I find myself fairly busy. So I'll try to make more videos in the near future, but I can't guarantee anything.
6 years later and I'm still coming back for this. gold

Hi Skiidzman! Thanks a lot for the compliment! I really appreciate it!
Greetings from Venezuela! Our professor is teaching us how to calculate apparent dip and this helps a lot. Thank you very much!
keep doing more please! you just significantly helped my buddy and i out for our structure class
Thank you very much for this great teaching, really appreciate it - A student from Sri Lanka! 😊
So easy to understand! Please keep posting videos on structural geology

Very good sir best illustrated for true and apparent dip concept
Congratulation...from Lima Perú....
thank you blake this video helped me a great deal
We need more of this!!!
Thanks Sir. Love from India
This is really helpful. Please try to upload more videos
Great job Dear. Carry on!
It's a well explained video. Thanks for sharing...keep it like that!!!
Is it possible to mathematically solve for beta (rather than graphically) if you only know the apparent dip? After which you could solve for delta.
Thankyou very much. Most helpful for my geo tutorial :D
You are amazing
Thank you very much! Very logical explaining things simply!
What if you are asked to find true dip from a strike of S 48°W and a vertical apparent dip of 23°
It was very helpful. Thank you.
thanks for uploading.please a video about sterionet for rock slopes stability..plzzz
thank you! super helpful! My structure class is even using the same lab book!
Hi, where can I find more videos??
Dude! Thank you so much! This made so much sense!
This was incredibly helpful. Thank you. Also using the same lab book :-)
Hi, where can I find more videos??
Book name plzzz
Teach us more plz! u did well :)
thank you so much!! you're very helping!!!
What is azimuth if strike is SE & dip is SW or vice virsa?
sir please tell me what is the difference between apparent displacement and real displacement
Sir how have you arrived at 23.3 deg delta? how did you do it in your calcu? mine the tan 0.43114 is equal to 0.000769.

What book did you flip to in the video? I'm honestly so lost and need help lol
Hi there, the book used is cited in the description of the video. I think it's a pretty good resource!
pls explain why we measure attitude of rocks..??
what is the application of measuring attitude of rocks??

thank you :)
What geology textbook are you using?
I don’t have it memorized off the top of my head, but I mention it in my first video of this series!
Can you make some videos on stereographic projection too?
I plan on making videos about this at some point, but unfortunately, it likely will not be done anytime soon. I am a PhD student now, and it is very difficult to find the time to make these kinds of videos.
Blake Splitter can you suggest a good book for the theory portions of structural geology? I will really be grateful.

nice we have the same lab manual!
isn't the Strike always North to South?
Nope! Strike could be any compass direction en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strike_and_dip.
Thanking u sir
Thank you.....
I'm searching for geology jobs pls tell me about jobs at india
use in same lab book

DO OUTCROP PATTERNS PLEASE HUHUHUHUHUHUHU
Can you translate your video in Arabic, please?
Hi, I don't speak arabic, unfortunately.
