It could work, creatives thrive on tension and produce some of their best work in hostile surroundings and relationships. Think Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and everyone else just before or after they split up.
Granted, I'm late to the party here on this 9 year old clip, but the negativity in the comments is surprising. This was a great band at the height of their considerable powers, meticulously crafting what I believe to be a masterpiece in Nonsuch. I think Partridge is an underappreciated genius, if such a word even applies to music. This footage was not meant to entertain. It does illustrate the reality that recording music ain't as glamorous as it may seem. As in movie and TV making, it's mostly a lot of sitting around. I found this fascinating, hearing "Then She Appeared" take shape, some Dave Gregory solos that didn't make it onto the final version of "That Wave", etc. How much anyone enjoys this is dependent on how much they like XTC. If you're not a fan or think their heyday was the early years, then sure, this is mostly boring stuff, with occasional music in various raw forms. The band playing stuff should appeal to any musician types however. World class players if you ask me.
Gawd almighty, I am SO GRATEFUL to whomever had the presence of mind to videotape all this. Gus Dugeon, I guess, though I don't know who that is. For me, this is like being granted a tour of the mind of Willy Wonka.
Tyrion Lannister Gus was an amazing record producer who gave us some Elton John's most notable songs during the best part of his career in the early 70s. He was a producer. In their day, record producers made an artist's song a reality that was, at times, better than what they could have realized. Sadly, Gus and his wife died in 2002 due to a road accident in England. What you see here is how he made records.
I listened to this cassette on repeat during my 1st deployment in the Navy. My job was to monitor the water breaks during flight ops just under the bow of the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. The cacophony of the catapult in active operation mixed with these tunes & being shut in a cramped, incredibly hot room for hours on end is one of those indelible memories I can immediately pull up all these years later.
I always thought that "Oranges and Lemons" was a masterpiece. And it is. But "Nonsuch" is just another level. Thanks for this small peek into making it.

Last time I did LSD was for the release of Non-such. I couldn't get Then She Appeared out of my head for a week. And didn't want to. Actually if you chuck Bungalow and War Dance you have one of the best records ever made
me loves war dance :)
I love it . . freddiecable's reply is ( currently ) 4 hours ago, to a comment from 4 years ago !
Ah, internet . . you so timeless.
But YEAH ! . . how does one consider "chucking" War Dance ?? .. . not only is it "a patriotic romance", but one a' me faves as well !
@@DmRofAtoZ Haha! I reflected over the exact same thing. How time stands both still and moves crazy fast on ze internet.
@freddiecable : It's ALL there, at the same time . . "virtually" all available content .
We are all becoming like Griffin from "Men In Black III", except instead of seeing all potential futures, we see all possible pasts !
Somewhere . . a 14 year old has followed a convoluted online path and is now getting into Ernie Kovacs . . too obscure ? Ok . . . the newest Monty Python fan is born.
We can see a world where a few folks actually liked "Godzilla `98" . . . or, focusing back on Your point, one can add a new comment to a rapid-fire chat-thread from 2007, certain that no one will ever stumble upon it . . but next month ? . . someone does !
Me luv bungalow 🐴
Man Andy is fucking cool!!
Andy sure liked his Ibanez Artist .
All do respect Kevin, I do, and I know I'm not alone. Yes odds are not good, but we can sure hope .
Thanks for your interest!
Excellent! Good to see my old pal Gus again. Thanks for the upload
That great lost Cream single "Baji" (Badge) 🤣
sexy reel to reel transport external controller
Shame they gave up playing live. They sound a tight band on THE DISAPPOINTED.
did you see their performance on Letterman? really good...
12:36 - I still have that tuner, and it works great!
So have I!
Quite entertaining, if you ask me. Yes kids, this is how it's actually done :)
YES! The Great lesson. Merci DudE
men@work, C'est trop la classe de les voir bosser comme ca! Quel pieds
This album is so huge, so hard to fathom (and the MTV version of "The disappointed" somehow rubbed me the wrong way) that I actually zapped it, I floated into "oranges & lemons" for 10 years or so (yeah!) and jumped right into "Apple Venus" when it outed, and missed this STELLAR GEOCRUISING OBJECT (if anything it is TOO big, TOO good, at least for my poor half-fried brain) but let's face it, every XTC album is indispensable. Those guys made my miserable life barely livable ;) THANK YOU LORDS OF IT!!
Simon Cowell is how its done today, Sad isn't it..I want to cry.
thankyouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
More INDIAN SONGS...Echo & The Bunnymen's " SPARE US THE CALCUTTA"... Golden Earring's " GANDHI'S GOING BAD ".....Elvis Presley's " LOVE ME TENDULKAR".... Fleetwood Mac's " THE GREEN MAHARISHI ( with the two pronged crown)... The Beatles "CURRY THAT WEIGHT " or C.S.N.Y 's "CURRY ON".. or Kansas' " CURRY ON WAYWARD SON"... I'm bored now so going for a lie down.
Tremendous footage, thanks for posting. You might want to correct Gus's surname in the title and description though - it's 'Dudgeon' rather than 'Dugeon'.
poppadom preach, tears on my pilau...
dave mattacks!!!!
With all the demos that Andy records you would think that every thing would have been worked out before going in to record in an expensive recording studio.
FAB - Thanks
It's Dudgeon....witha 'd' !
Or "Guff Dungeon" according to Andy Partridge, due to his remarkable flatulence.
Touch me I'm Sikh? For all you grunge rockers......
