“NO Point Calling For A Ceasefire” | Muslim Labour MP Says 'Party Agreed On Humanitarian Pause’

  • Muslim Labour MPs have urged Sir Keir Starmer to call for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas as he sought to sooth their anger over his position on the conflict.
The Labour leader joined Rishi Sunak and the US in backing “humanitarian pauses” to deliver aid to Gaza as it faces a bombardment of airstrikes from Israel ahead of a potential ground invasion.
But Sir Keir has not backed the longer-lasting ceasefire as he supported Israel’s right to defend itself, a firm stance which triggered consternation within the party after he initially backed cutting off power and water in Gaza.
The comments, which he has since rowed back, prompted resignations among Labour councillors and angered the party’s MPs, even those on the frontbenches as shadow ministers.
Speaking to TalkTV’s Mike Graham, Labour MP Khalid Mehmood says the MPs had a “friendly” meeting with Sir Keir and agreed upon a “humanitarian pause” instead of a ceasefire in Gaza.

If these MPs are so concerned with Gaza they can go and be the new government when Israel takes out hamas. Clealry they're more concerned about that than what's going on here in the UK.

@@shazkh7753 Ukraine is an ally, Gaza is not. If Portugal was attacked tomorrow we'd be supporting them, because they are our ally, our oldest infact. This is how the world works. Ukraine is also a key issue for Europe, which we are a part of. If you put the past 70 years aside Europe was constantly plagued with war, constantly shifting borders and boundaries. Ukraine is also Europe's bread basket we get the bulk of grain and feritliser from there, they are key to our stability.

A one sided ceasefire is not a ceasefire. Does anyone believe that even if Israel agreed to a ceasefire, Hamas would agree and honour that agreement?
They would keep on lobbing missiles into civilian areas of Israel. And yes I know that Israel has a missile defence system but it is not 100% effective.
Can you really expect anyone to turn the other cheek when faced with terrorist attacks.

I find it interesting how people keep using the term “killed” about the 1500+ Israel people murdered on the 7th Oct. Almost, making the atrocity sound like an accidental car crash. Everyone needs to acknowledge that there were 1500+ Israelis murdered by Hamas, in a brutal atrocity, that was a terrorist attack on the 7th Oct 2023. Only then can there be dialogue and debate. Hamas has in principle done exactly what Japan did at Pearl Harbour in 1941, which ultimately lead to the destruction of the Japanese military ruling class and has now lead to open war between Gaza and Israel.

@@ermandaim3811If I am not mistaken, Israel has leafleted Gaza for people to move out of target areas, Hamas have tried to prevent this, e.g. the bombing of a convey heading south. Also, Hamas have admitted using “human shields” and which aid organisation has determined 700 casualties in Gaza. So while ever Hamas is playing by the same rules as ISIS etc. there will be innocent casualties caused by the further actions of Hamas.

The problem here is the lack of information and knowledge about Israel and Palestine. Many of us have very little knowledge of what is happening in Gaza and how Hamas control every facet of Palestinian life, 75% of Gaza Palestinians voted for Hamas and continue to support it. On the 7th October the streets were full of people celebrating the atrocities against Israeli Jews. Now you don't see anyone celebrating they are now all protesting Israeli actions to destroy Hamas, however what people understand is that the UN workers and other NGOs have been infiltrated by Hamas, Palestinian Spokespeople from the Hospitals and other authorities in Gaza are Hamas. If you don't understand that they are setting the story and many falsehoods then you fall for the 'suffering martyr'. Palestinians knew what they voted for and where it would end. Any aid going into Gaza will be siphoned off to Hamas before any ordinary Palestinian gets a look in but this is what they voted for and support.

The famous Birmingham accent on display remember “Auf Wiedersien Pet” nice to see the people running Birmingham are still in touch with culture of the almost 1000 year old country that we are. The grassroots of Labour ladies and gentleman also nothing new to see here. Labour was founded on principles of what’s going on in the Middle East. Remember the strikes of 1970s were all about the plight of the Palestines and nothing to do with wages for working class’s. Reform UK or revolution.

Starmer again has screwed up and has alienated another section of the Labour base. If you accept that their is a schism between left wing and right wing british jews over Israels treatment of the Palestinians, which there is. If you accept that the plight of the Palestinians, for the Labour membership is as strong as their support for the NHS, which it is and the fact that labour muslim voters would be offended by a Labour leader responding in the way he did. Then doesn't this point to starmer and his advisors being totally politically inept. I don't understand him trying to appeal to right wing conservative jews, who will never vote Labour whilst alienating left wing jews and muslims
