I don't know if the timing works, but there's a total eclipse in Oregon on the morning August 21, 2017. The center of totality is just north of Mt Jefferson on the PCT. If you can possibly be there on that date, you'll remember it for the rest of your life!
Hiya, Great video! Couple of suggestions: I discovered (the hard way) that hand sanitizer can leak, it wet my toilet paper, so put that so I've started putting that in it's own little zip lock bag inside the toiletries bag. You might find the bottle of liquid soap might do the same thing... Another way around is to put the toilet paper in it's own zip lock bag. I use Elastoplast(fabric) band aids and tape, and find they tend to stay in place, don't come off till I take them off. I used them on the Six Foot Track (a 3 Day Hike we have here in Sydney Australia). I've subbed, so am looking forward to following your trek. Thanks for sharing. Cheers
Recently on a hike my son and I discovered a small twig type branch maybe 15 inches long stripped down with a leaves left on the last 4 inches was very effective in keeping mosquitoes out of our faces, we made them as we entered a cyn
Good hike your own hike philosophy along with attitude to change what works/doesn't work. Wouldn't depend on first aid resupply too much...better to have and not need than to...oh well...just the NOLS WFR side of me coming out. Best.
Stogy Know the adrenaline rush with rattlesnake . Had timber rattler strike at my left treking pole on the AT around Davenport Gap . After that . missed my first shelter for watching trail for more snakes .
I have the same pack, but mine is the South West in Black...... I also have the Tyvek ground cloth.... I washed mine in the washing machine to get the crackling out of it...... I'm stating on the 2st! See ya on the Trail!
Sorry if I was unclear, I was referring to ~25:55 where he throws the bags (unfilled) into the exterior back pocket. I thought 1) they wont fit will there (or elsewhere) full and 2) full that would be a bad weight-distribution-wise location. so I wondered what his plan was. (Yes I am aware of the weight of water, the question was around *packing* which is what this video stands out for - tons of videos just go over "what to carry" not "how to pack it" and this seems to be a good "how to pack" video)
Good insight! I guess he would put them on the lateral pouches and put the smart water bottles on the mesh bag instead? Or put them inside the bag, outside the trash liner, close to the back for better weight distribution. As for being it inside the bag, I think if you put them carefully, theres no risk of them leaking.
Going to thru hike the PCT next year, first long hike ever. I was wondering if anyone here had any opinion on using an Australian Swag on the trail? I like the idea of being able to roll your whole sleeping system up in one roll. Is it too heavy? Is it worth it? Tell me your thoughts :D Greetings
Thanks for the input, that's funny to hear. I cut the liner out of them, and have ran/hiked a lot in them. I think they're fine. If I decide I don't like them anymore, they're easy to replace.
Thim Bales works good in the desert depending on orientation and time of day, but once you get into northern central California you spend quite a bit of time in the trees/shade.
I have 90% of Bobby's gear and it's easy to look up. He is right, you really don't want to the know the cost unless you're into the this ultralight weight backpacking thing. My kit would cost even be more because I have a dedicated ultralight Ti Cookset that I will NOT leave home without. I also have dedicated Ti stove--that uses fuel and the other uses the elements for fuel or that is available to me, etc. I also have a paracord/bankline, thermorest knee/work pad, spare batteries for headlamp/back-up flashlight, small fire kit--includes ferro rod, solar/charger, a more dedicated FAK/trauma kit and I always carry a fixed blade on my person. Of course I add a couple of pounds and that's it--I want some luxuries not doubt:) It's still very, very light and more enjoyable. I would never do what Bobby is doing as I simply don't have the time with family, work, etc. However, there are times I want to go on a 2-3 day trek or even an overnighter with less weight--it's much more fun as I mentioned:)
Take a gun if you go in the backwoods alone. I've done it in the north east it makes a difference when you start hearing weird shit around your camp and you are certain the closest human being is 10 miles away in rough terrain.
You might want to rethink the weed things, you will be in national parks that are run by federal gov employees and weed is still a schedule one drug for those Bozo's.
Put your Tyvex in the washer machine 2 times on cold without soap... still waterproof and less chip bag sound
Thumbs up for your natural pain remedies...
Love your setup. EXCEPT the lack of a cook system. Gotta have that morning coffee and evening tea or it's a "no go" for me. lol!
understood, i just like to get moving
gliderrider Amen to that. I can't imagine not having coffee and a hot meal.
Great vid, man. I fully lol'ed when your dog wandered in, sniffed around and then wandered off.

That's a tiny pack Bobby Hill. Mismatch would be proud.

Im 6'2 and 190...please tell me how that 55 L pack works out for you. I'm debating whether or not I should get that size or the 70L

Could you give us a lighterpack link?
I don't understand your question.
You can make gear lists on lighterpack.com with weight of items and link/pictures etc and any extra comments on items.
+ChuckNoctis I don't use that site. I'll let you know if that changes

Hm, what about when you have water in those 2 2L bladders?
rude

Great video, thanks! You might want to use kite making Tyvek instead of the house kind. Search Amazon for - Tyvek Fabric 1443r 43 GSM - Works great!
Hell yeah
what is the reference of your socks ?
spend the $ on some Leki trekking poles. lifetime guarantee . great pole an better customer service.

try leukotape instead of duct tape for blisters, etc.
Everyone in the AF hates those PT shorts. lol

Selkirk Trekker AF hates PT, dont blame it on the shorts.
wonder why people choose battery packs over solar? I have a solar monkey but haven't used it over a long period of time.

I'd like to know the cost of your base weight
i wouldn't
