Rest in peace, sir. I discovered you just today, listened to the redone version of Dawson's Pride. Brought tears to my eyes, left me weepin' like a baby.
I actually have known about this for a couple of months! I donated a couple of dollars to hear the new version of Dawsons Christian. Its sooo good. Those songs helped me through so many bad times, and the new version brings such a new and more modern feel to the song.
I can't express how absolutely wild this is to me. I remember reaching out about licensing some songs for an open-source game two years ago, never expecting a word - and then having things just happen one by one. The HQ recordings of all these old songs breathed new life into the genre, and then hearing that there'd be new music, let alone being one of the first to hear the early versions of the new recordings - just wow! There's a childlike sense of wonderment and glee in me where there was once only a longing to be a part of this and a sadness that the time had long come and gone, well before I was even *alive*. Thanks, Vic. I'm damn proud of this community.
I first learned about filk through a game called space station 13 hearing this music played through a jukebox in a half destroyed space station is what made it for me
I discovered Filk today for the first time in my life threw Starfields Space Shanty "The Valentine"... AND I LOVE IT! I don't know the old version of "Dawson's Christian", but the new one gives me goosebumps!
YOU'RE Vic Tyler?! Sir it is an absolute honor. I was actually writing filk before I found it a few years ago and ever since a stranger pointed me towards CMG I've fallen in love with it. The works of Duane Elms, Bill Sutton, and all the others have inspired me to write ballads of my own. I lost my mind with excitement last night when I saw not one but six new variations of Elms' "Christian". As for my review, you knocked it out of the park! Dare I say the best rendition yet! The guitar solo must have broken your fingers And as for the album, sir, I have a request: I am nowhere near the level of musicianship that you are, but I am proud of the work I've done. If it's not to late for a last-minute entry, I ask that you consider doing a cover of one of my songs. I consider "The Kings of Kallaragh Lighor" and "Voidwind" to be my best. They're rough around the edges, but you can find them on my channel. It would be beyond belief to hear you perform one of them, sir. Either way, waiting for this album to release is going to be the strongest test of my patience. I truly can't wait! Take care, Mr. Tyler! "Space is wide and good friends are too few" Also, give my regards to Mr. Klover! I recently learned "Call the Navigator" and boy was that one difficult! Totally worth buying a 12-string for, though!

I understand that you may not have direct control over this channel, Vic Tyler, but I still wanted to leave a message to express my admiration for your work. Despite the fact that filk music belongs to a different era than my own, it has become a significant part of my life, and I listen to your music almost daily. In particular, I have developed a deep attachment to "Dawson's Christian," which I listen to between 5-8 times a week. If RUclips were a cassette player, I fear that the "Dawson's" cassette would have worn out by now! Perhaps that analogy doesn't quite work, but I hope you understand my enthusiasm. As a big gamer, I also enjoy listening to your music while playing various games. For example, I listen to "CMG" when playing "Hardspace Shipbreaker," which transports me to the stars and makes me feel like I'm truly part of the game. When I'm piloting a bomber in "War Thunder," I listen to "Bomber," which enhances the experience of playing the game. Your music has added an extra dimension to my gaming experience, and I am truly grateful for that. The redone dawson’s christian was great! That and Leslie’s return makes me hopeful that this genre won’t be left in the dust. Dawson’s Christian is a classic, what other songs are you planning on redoing, and will new songs be made as well?
@@MazianCorvus So the working list of songs that Vic and Ben are thinking about recording next include the 2 songs mentioned above (which are indeed actively in progress!) -- as well as Jordin Kare's songs "Kantrowitz 1972" & "Pushing the Speed of Light", Bill Sutton's "Star Song", and a never-released song by Wendy Sayvetz and Siri Allison, "Prayer for a Daughter". The idea is that it's more cost-effective to do multiple tracks at once, vs. bringing in session musicians from around the region just to do a single song.
Hi Vic -- thank you so much for taking the time to make these new recordings, it is SO appreciated. I've always loved your contributions to filk, so it's great having these high quality recordings now!
That's awesome! I only just discovered filk at all less than a year ago, and Dawson's Christian has been my favorite so far. Definitely going to get the new version! Good luck with everything new!

These songs got me inspired to start writing and (eventually) fully illustrating my own sci-fi universe. Absolutely stellar songs, the new versions are fantastic. Your voice aged like wine. Just amazing! I cant wait to hear all the ones you remaster.
Hell yes! Buying immediately. Thank you for sharing this, and Vic, if you see this - welcome back. Any chance of a new recording of Spaceman's Dilemma?
Hell yeah let's go I was just listening to another filk album when I saw this, too. Listening to the new Dawson's Christian 25/3 best filk song I've heard this year Just checked the Image, it's amazing to see what the starships looked like (didn't expect a giant box with wings to be Hera's Dream, so I began laughing)
Hi, I’m glad you like the retro mix! You might be referring to my version of it, which happened before this version. I’m the one who played the guitar on this. Thank you for liking it.
OH HELL YEAH! I remember trying to find more stuff of yours because I loved your voice in "A final battle" but couldn't find anything. Really glad to hear you're coming back and still into filk! And I'm listening to the new Dawson's Christian, and I like it. It's slower paced, but I really like it! I'm looking forward to any new stuff you've got coming! (Any spoilers on what you've got planned?)
There will be some other remixes from the “Carmen Miranda’s Ghost” album. They are currently in production now. I just don’t have a release date to share yet.
Hell yeah! Glad you're coming back into it! I know that this question is probably asked in vain, but is there any chance of these recordings being made on music cassettes too? I recently started getting into music cassettes, and I've been on the hunt especially for filk recordings! Alternatively, I'd also appreciate it, if you had anything on old cassettes still floating around, like "Carmen Miranda's Ghost", "Free Fall & Other Delights", "Space Heroes & Other Fools" and any other ones. Thanks!
I'm not Vic ;-), but I think doing a small cassette print run is a great idea, especially given the "unobtanium" status of the original Carmen Miranda's Ghost tape. The only downside is that the state of the art of cassette manufacturing and duplication in 2023 is pretty bad. We used NAC to do a ~80 copy print run of Julia Ecklar's "Rise Again" during the pandemic, and there were complaints about the duplication quality. But I think it's a good idea worth exploring.
holy shoot that is exciting, I love Dawson's Christian. Were the space shanties inspired by Star Trek? It has that kind of vibe. New mix is still a huge banger and I like how clear the lyrics are and the music is good too. I do miss the clarinet or whatever it was a bit, it had a cool little solo.
