  • Hi folks,
    In this Episode I'll be showing you in detail how I level up any type of Carcass. Whether its a wardrobe or Alcove unit, Cupboard or sidetable, this method will work amazingly!
    I use bearers (lengths of 2x1 timber, packed up to the height needed)
    I personally don't like using adjustable legs/feet for fitting furniture as you need to many fixings, I also don't like the fact the legs are so tall ( as I fit most of my furniture 50 - 60mm from the floor ).
    Watch the video all the way through and see what you think... ive used this method for 10 years and wouldn't change it.
    Enjoy!
    😉

    This really helped me. Just knocked my chimney breast down and putting a 4m wide wardrobe in on a very wonky floor. Going to heed this advice!

    Thanks for having made this excellent video. I was so surprised when I watched you screw the first layer of packers into your flooring. I guess it means you figure that you will never need to move that piece of furniture. In my case, I would hate to drill holes in my beautiful imitation marble floors, although I am finding it a huge pain to try and level one of my wardrobes.

      Thank you.
      You could screw all the packers together and then the bearers to the packers, all without fixing anything to the floor.
      If your wardrobe or unit is heavy enough it should weight it down nicely.
      You could then stabilise/fix the bottom of the wardrobe sideways into skirting boards or walls.
      Or, you could glue the packers to the floor.

    I have been making plyths with 4 X 2 planed all round timber . I must admit your way is simpler, cheaper in cost and just as quick maybe quicker actually not to mention easier to carry all the bits to the place it needs to go instead of carrying a pre built piece, which still needs to be made level

    Cheers, for point this video out to me in your latest release, this really filled in the gap I had with your installation method.
    A question, if you were installing bearers on to a concrete floor/pad would you still sink a screw through the first packer or would you glue it down with liquid nails or something similar?

      Thank you!!
      And yes either way really... I'd say a 5x50 screw throught the first 18mm base packer is the best bet, unless you can 100% confirm the glue will be good enough and not come off 👍👍👍

    Thanks for sharing, would you also do this for a deep and heavy wardrobe like IKEA Pax 100cmx60xm? Would you still do 2 rows of bearers or 3? With Pax is seems like the side panels are what supports the frame so would you ever lay the bearers vertically or should it be fine? Thanks!

      @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop  8 месяцев назад

      you are welcome.
      I always use this technique. Just make sure the packers are where the weight is being transferred down, like a division or side.
      No harm in doing 3 rows, but I never have, I think 2 is enough.
      I make the bearers the same width as the carcass, then any side panels travel down to the floor.

    Hi Ryan, thanks for the great video. How would you fix the packers down onto a tiled floor? I was thinking grab adhesive may do the trick or I guess I could use a tile bit and wall plugs. Cheers!

      @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop  Год назад +1

      Hi Jack, I'd do exactly what you said.
      I'd probably try drilling first as I would prefer mechanical fixings, but a grab adhesive second choice. It would be tough not to disturb the first packer whilst building up and putting on the bearers but doable

      @@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop perfect, cheers. First time trying your patented bearer approach so looking forward to being able to slide the carcasses without worrying about the feet buckling!

    What size screws do you use bud? I heard u say 30 ‘ 40’s etc are they a 4 or 5?.. Screwfix?

    • @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop
      @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop  3 года назад

      Hi, for bearers I always fix down an 18mm packer first to build up my layers. So my first screw is mver more than 30mm as wooden floors are generally only 20mm floor boards and don't want to risk hitting a pipe underneath.
      After this layer you can go to a 50mm for the rest of the packers and the bearers.
      I use size 4 heads, but I still use size 5s for fixings into brick /concrete etc and for those kind of uses, but 4's on all my carcasses and bearers etc 👍👍

      I just use basic screws for toolstation or screwfix as the dont need to be special. As long as you pre drill with a 3mm drill bit on everything then any cheap screw will do.

    Do u still do this on a concrete floor?

    • @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop
      @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop  3 года назад +1

      Yep, just sds drill and and plugs to do the first layer, then normal wood screws after that 👍
