Shockingly Low Price & Crazy Good Sound! Why These Guitars Are In A League Of Their Own!

  • In this jazz guitar review, I show you a very affordable archtop guitar that is in the $500 to $900 dollar range and is well worth the price. This is a Samick LaSalle JZ-2 that I just set up and that I am putting up for sale. This is a large, fat-bodied guitar that puts out a big jazz sound. The reason I say it is in a league of its own is that there aren't many jazz boxes of this size on the market today in this price range. They aren't making these any longer, so they are somewhat hard to find. This particular archtop was built in the 90s and is in excellent condition. Let me know how you like it. Leave me a comment, and thanks for watching!

    About Rich:
Originally from the L.A. area, Rich has been playing professionally and teaching guitar for over thirty years. His education includes years of college and private instruction with a variety of teachers, including Mitch Holder, Ted Greene, Joe Pass, and Charlie Shoemake, to name a few. He feels education is a continuing process. There's always more to learn. Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Howard Roberts, Ted Greene, and Larry Carleton have all influenced his playing.
Rich wrote three books for a major publisher, Dale Zdenek/ Belwin Mills/Columbia, providing him the opportunity to work with other great artists/authors like Tommy Tedesco, Joe Diorio, and Ted Greene. After teaching at GIT/Musicians Institute, in Hollywood, CA, for three years, he developed and published his own home study guitar school-type curriculum available on his website www.GuitarCollegeLibrary.com which has helped over ten thousand students improve their playing.
Rich has won honorable mentions and awards in songwriting and served as president of the Ventura County Producers and Songwriters Guild. Touring for three years with "Dick Clark's Good Old Rock and Roll Show," he had the opportunity to perform with Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Little Anthony, and many other great, old-time rock and rollers.
After moving his family to the Yosemite/Fresno area, he taught guitar and directed the jazz band at Fresno Pacific University for two years. Being a well-rounded player, Rich is comfortable playing a variety of styles, including jazz (his favorite), blues, rock, fusion, country, and solo fingerstyle. He performs at local venues in a number of different scenarios, as a solo guitarist, with his jazz trio or quartet or smooth jazz quintet. At home in his studio, he is continually producing new lessons for RUclips and www.GuitarCollegeLibrary.com.

Thanks to you I just found one in wine red and purchaed it! It should be here next Tuesday! :) Thanks Rich! I was eyeing the Ibanez Expresionist or Eastman AR372CE more expensive (still reasonable) than this Sumick howwever, there is something about the sound of that Duncan Designed pickup that I liked when you played. The site selling this guitar new btw also had a demo and the sound I like is spot on. I currently own and love my AR371CE but find it to be a bit bright. Your channel got me addicted to archtops! I have sold most of my solid tops and just now have a solid telecaster and D'Angelico mini DC. You and your son Wes do a great job here! Love your channel man!

Rich, I love your channel and your playing [more Kenny...]. That's a beautiful looking, and beautiful sounding guitar. I have a 30 year old Samic produced Epi Joe Pass that is your guitar's 16"X3" sweet playing little brother, that I still love. Upgraded my bridge and tailpiece along the way, and I'm not giving it up. And you are exactly right, the difference in size does deepen the tone.

I bought a Samic LaSall about 8 years ago with a Bigsby. Orange quilted tiger stripe. I like the sound.the only thing I don't like (other than the weight - bad back) is the shape of the neck. It makes my hand tired. I I'm used to a strat. With really low action,& flatwounds. I need to get some hvy top/skinny bottom flatwounds. Then I'll think about setting it up better. For gigs I use an old Fender "Princeton chorus" w/12" speakers. It'll almost drown out a firetruck if I turn the volume up too much - but even at that level, it still sounds thanksgood. With no feedback. Thanks.

It certainly has a sweet sound, is quite responsive and dynamic. The previous owner had it fitted with Seymour Duncan Phat Cat pickups, which are P90s, an added bonus.

@@RichSeversonGuitar I've just finished re-watching the video and there are zero audio sync issues!

I just sold my Epiphone Casino which I never, ever imagined I would ever do!! I've been a Beatles fan for all my life and when I found out they used the Epiphone Casino on pretty much all their albums.
I always assumed Lennon was using his Rickenbacker (he had 4 versions)
I also sold another fantastic guitar, my Seagull Maritime acoustic which was an amazing instrument with a neck like "budda" AKA butter, high quality materials and QC.
I sold them so I could buy an Epiphone Excellente, which I am not alone in saying is one of the greatest acoustics out there!! I love acoustic but I still have a LP Junior with a single humbucker. My Casino had two dogear P90s so I didn't buy the single pu Junior.
I also have a great Oscar Schmidt Washburn gold top Les Paul, which I really love. I was a lead vocal/writer/rhythm guitar player over 30 years and I performed rock. Jazz playing is too sophisticated and the chords are outrageously hard at times! I love Jazz but I'm an old school (old man) rock n roll guy!!

I own an older Samick Semi-Hollow and two Samick-made Epiphone hollow bodied guitars. They are quite decent guitars, especially the Samick. They are all at a price point that is affordable, but not dead cheap. For 500-900 Dollar you can get really decent guitars. I really don't get why most people that spend hours playing guitar would not be prepared to pay at least that.

I found a Samick SARC 902 on Craigslist. Had to drive 2 hours each way to pick it up. It's beautiful. Paid $150.

Sweet Midnight Blue! Had a Samik acoustic years ago I ditched it because a refret cost more than the guitar, but it was great. Im a big fan of Korean made guitars for value, and love my Peerless Monarch. Would love to see you put one through the paces. Also curious as to Samik vs Peerless vs Eastman. I know when I bought the Peerless, I couldn't find a similar Eastman in its price range. I do have the Epiphone Joe Pass, and the Peerless (maybe twice the money) is far better in my opinion.

Glad to hear that coreans still make great budget guitars, like Peerless. Very happy with Peerless. But not happy with Samicks headstock.

Always love to hear you play Rich. :) I am trying to follow some of your playing and practice the chord soloing - man you do that so beautiful. How can I get just part of the way there? Suggestions from your store?
Also - do you have videos showing how you set up your guitars with the extra washers under the mics etc?

There are Ibanez jazz boxes, their AF range, which are also inexpensive.

I have an Ibanez AFJ95, which while not as large as that Samick, is as expressive as that guitar. It also has a Spruce top and flame maple back and sides, more in line with the Gibson L5 formula. But I think the Samick could be better with a rosewood compensated bridge, instead of the metal TOM bridge. The Ibanez has a rosewood board and rosewood bridge. GEO. Benson, J. Scofield, and P. Matheny use the high end made in Japan versions. Mine is Chinese, but I'm not gonna let ethnicity block my appreciation of the Ibanez entry level product. I also believe your Samick has a Spruce top, too.
