this isnt necessarily a love song, just like all the other songs in smithereens. smithereens doesnt only apply to the feeling of lost love and broken hearts, but to a very, very wide range of sadder, more isolating emotions. die for you makes you feel that loneliness deep within yourself, but it also somewhat teaches you how to live with it and be comfortable with the friends you have at the moment. dont seclude yourself, dont beat yourself up over something out of your control. "its ok" is what smithereens says to me
to me smithereens isnt about calling out for a love or grieving a relationship, but rather a deep reflection or just a brief moment where we stop and reminisce on a past a relationship, the album is short because distant memories are always short, just passing notes and lights that flicker in our mind (hence the music video) and even if we've learned to accept our loss and move on. a small piece of me would still die for you
