Norm was a character on Cheers who was greeted by shouts of "Norm" when he entered the bar.
Norm!
Normie Normie Normie…
Hockey Normie!
Nooorm!
Norman.
The Norm-inator!
Britt, it’s time for The Moth Joke.
For background context: Conan asked norm to stay on the show for a second segment. Norm didn’t have anything else to talk about so he took an old street joke that’s normally a 10 second joke, and made it 5 minutes long to cover the remaining time on Conan. All improvised except the punch line. Highly recommend
100% this is one of the best ones.
I was just about to recommend this!
From my understanding, the filler that Norm used was taken from famous literature. Which goes to show how intelligent Norm really was.
@@joshuawiedenbeck6944It definitely reminded me of Kafka's The metamorphosis
There literally was a contestant on the Dating Game who was a serial killer.
I was looking for this comment 😂 His name Was Rodney Alpaca-something
He died a couple of years ago in prison...convicted of 8 murders and believed to have killed possibly 130.
sounds like he was a serious bastard.
Alcala
The name, Richard spawned from the German word, Rickart. Rickart means hard ruler in German. Richard, the sixth of England was an especially hard ruler and lived up to his name. So, the people called him Dick, which was already a slang for penis. which technically can be a hard measuring stick.😊
It’s a gag on the tv show Cheers. When Norm walks into the bar, everyone in the bar shouts out “Norm!” And Norm McDonald got the same response. But it was people recreating the Cheers moment with the people in the bar saying “Norm!”
Then the waitress with a sly, "Norman."
Norm is definitely handsome but also charming as heck, really lights a room up. (He doesnt have any lights on him or anything)
He does it through sheer tyranny of will.
He seems to be somebody you could really turn to, if you wanted to turn your head and have somebody in your view. He really seems like somebody I'd like to get to ... Fuck, I forgot he's dead.
I heard he is writing a new Netflix special. I can't wait for that to come out. He is the best In the business.
@@clark2491 you talking about the one they made with Sandler and Spade and Chappelle? It's out if already if that's the one you mean
@@clark2491 You serious, Clark?
8:32 When I was a kid, popsicles usually came packaged in pairs frozen together. To get the two halves apart, it really did take the force of pressing them against the edge of the counter (at the narrow section between the two halves while still in the wrapper). You could share them or keep one half in the freezer for later. This is one of his oldest bits, and he once performed it on Star Search (kind of like America’s Got Talent but with categories and a champion-challenger format).
When I was a little kid, there wasn't a dial on the phone, let alone buttons. You picked up the phone, and an operator came on and said "Number pleeease?" Two years later after we got a dial phone, it was amazing when they introduced direct long distance dialing, where we could dial my uncle 1000 miles away, without talking to an operator!
You're picture makes you appear too young to have caught the tail end of anything but, possibly, party lines and, later on, phone booths.
There is absolutely nobody like Norm Macdonald - one of a kind
“Norm Macdonald - professor of logic” on Conan.
^Another young Norm clip
Dick is a nickname most often for Richard, which likely originated in the Middle Ages as rhyming slang for "Rick", as did William → Will → Bill and Robert → Rob → Bob. The association with "the body part" is more recent, arising from Dick becoming a cliché name for any man, as in Tom, Dick and Harry (source: wikipedia)
Actually the serial killer Rodney Alcala was on the Dating Game in 1978.
Dick Clark and Ed McMahon used to have a show called "TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes" that was bloopers from various shows and practical jokes played on actors.
@10:00 "He's a professional rambler" ... best description of Norm Macdonald I have ever heard. Spot on!
Cheers Britt 🍷
Please do the Courtney Thorne Smith / Norm interview on Conan, also the professor of logic joke. Those are easily his best bits
Love these
The fact poor sweet Britt is lil young to remember when Woody had hair .. Frasier was still married to Lilith , and Cliff told us about EVERYTHING and Carla was awesome !!!
I do accounting & used to process a lot of employee travel expense reports. There were plenty of times where the hotel folio showed a $19.99 video charge that didn’t get submitted for reimbursement!
Norm polished the "Pump Friction," joke and told it to Letterman (maybe five years later) in his unique casual style and it is much funnier.
I love that you love Norm Macdonald! I had a crush on him too - in real time!
I hope you check out , Norm Macdonalds last stand up on Letterman, it was the week letterman was retiring and he wanted Norm to be the last stand up comedian on his show. As a young man, Norm looked up to Dave and even has referred to Dave as a father figure to him, who he’d call whenever he needed advice. Norm passed away in late 2021 after battling cancer for 9 years, but did not tell anyone. Only his mother, son and best friend/manager knew, none of norms friends or the public ever knew because he didn’t want sympathy laughs, the most important thing to him was the comedy.
If I remember correctly, didn't norm make his first television debut on Letterman?
@@Gutslinger yesssss
Oddly and creepily enough, there was a serial killer that was on the Dating Game that was later caught and convicted. I think he died in prison in CA. The info on him is out there. The guy actually won the date but the woman refused to go out with him because she thought he was weird or something. Truth is stranger than fiction!
You think Norm didn't know about Rodney Acola or.whatever his last name was?
Norm's "rambling" was so great, because it made his off the cuff stuff sound just as rehearsed as his sketches. There's one conversation where he describes a serial killer referred to as the gray man, and the person he's talking to can't stop laughing because they can't tell if he's being serious or not.
my favorite norm bit might be the conan gift-basket bit. brutally funny because Conan had lost his show and Norm was savagely funny about it (which in turn made conan laugh his ass off). But another favorite is a bit that Norm did where he would call into this radio show that Dennis Miller had.. and he had a ventriloquist bit he was doing over the radio which cracked everyone up.. he said he had a ventriloquist dummy that he never liked to use because it was a raging holocaust denier lol. dennis miller couldn't breathe from laughing so hard
I don't know if you need this long of an explanation of the Richard/Dick thing, but I got a linguistics degree for some reason, so now I better use it:
The Richard/Dick thing is old enough that English R used to be pronounced like in Spanish or Italian (or Scottish English), so if you pronounce it quickly enough, you sometimes accidentally say D instead of R because the tip of the tongue is in the same place when making that sound. Rick -> Dick. That's also how you get that Italian American pronunciation of Mozzarella as Mozzadell' (they also do this back in Southern Italy, so don't go about calling it wrong). The funny thing is that in modern American English, it happens in reverse, so if you say 'you better watch it' in a casual way, you're most likely pronouncing the t's in 'better' as an 'r'-sound.
The reason Richard got shortened to 'Rick' and not 'Rich' in the first place is that 'ch' actually used to be a 'k'-sound, but k is pronounced very far back in the mouth, and a lot of vowels are pronounced more forward, so in a lot of languages, 'k' before 'i', 'e', and sometimes 'a' turns into a ch-sound over time. That's what happened to C. It used to just be pronounced as 'k' in Latin, but then people started slacking on their pronunciation and suddenly you have to remember that it's pronounced Proseed and Prokyure even though they are both spelled with a C.
I hope that made sense.
Not sure about the reactor, but that was super helpful and made sense.
@@tric5122 Thanks :)
I thought it was because there was once a guy named Richard, and he had a little dick. Well, you learn something new every day.
You, Sir, are a scholar and a gentleman
I can definitely see your similar rambling style with Norm. You should have a talk show or podcast. I would listen all the time!
Hey girl. Canadian here
I have met Norm on 3 different occasions.
He was himself all the time. You would have had the best day ever, having a 10 minute interaction.
He was the man.
Norm's Moth Joke and Norm's Wife is a real battle-axe ---both on Conan
i like how u pick some of the less popular norm clips. pls keep doing norm reactions❤
Many years ago after staying a night in a hotel I went to checkout and pay the next morning. The most beautiful Asian girl I have ever seen was working the counter. I admitted I had a PPV order and to make sure it was on the bill. She gave me a look like she automatically knew what kind of movie I ordered. Thankfully it was just Austin Powers Goldmember
"2:58...innstead aw a Flinsteins jalopj..."
Britt, On the TV show Cheers. The Show was based on a Bar in Boston. There was a regular on the show that came to the bar named Norm Peterson. Whenever he walked into the bar the staff and all the other regulars would yell out "NORM!!!" and then the back up bartender would ask him how's it going Mr. Peterson? To with Norm would answer with a wise guy pun. For That matter That might be something for you to React too! Norm Peterson's Entrance into Cheers!
Have you reacted yet to the Jim Croce song "Operator"? Every time I hear it I am transported back to a time when people didn't carry a phone in their pocket. If you had to make a call, you had to find a pay phone and you had to have change and you had to keep paying every (what?) 3 minutes to keep the connection going? Or else the person at the other end would have to accept the charges, which were exorbitant!
I always roll my eyes when people complain about life today. We have so many almost magical creations at our fingertips, so much food, air conditioning, cellphones, etc., yet still people weep bitter tears and threaten revolt if gas is more than 3.50 a gallon.
That amazing she finds him attractive norm would have been surprised but pleased.
Lol I love that you're reacting to norm deep cuts.
lol he was a pretty striking man. And he always seemed to want to look nice for Conan and Dave.
Dick Clark and Ed McMahon hosted a show called TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes back in the day mostly a compilation of bloopers and stuff
I love that you talk about your crush on early Norm, I feel the same way
If you don't know the "NORM" shout on Cheers, you don't know Cheers. It happened every episode.
3:02 How about only having three channels on a television and after 11:30 pm all three went off the air playing the national anthem.
Norm's at his sexiet in dave lettermans old show
many years ago i knew an older gentleman named Dick. it took a minute to get used to it, but once i did, it felt completely natural to say, and is actually a great name. that is all
Bro the pay phone and electric car?!?! GIRL RIIIIGHT!!!
The moth joke is another great one. Also if you watch the videos of Norm on the Dennis Miller show, you can see how much he changed over the years. Greatly missed.
Lord of the Flies 9:30 is a reference the the book Lord of the Flies 1954 by William Golding which involves children stranded on an island after a plane crash and the cruel society that they created before rescue. worth reading.
"5:45...missd, again."
As mentioned the character "Norm" was on a popular sitcom but all a punch line of sorts. Most every episode of "Cheers" included the line. "What's up Norm?"
Norm was an iconic character on the show “cheers”
You need to watch clips from his old podcast norm macdonald live. Norm reads jokes is a good one
There actually was a serial killer on the Dating Game back in the 1970's. His name was Rodney Alcala. True! Look it up.
He had already killed several women by then. He was chosen by the bachelorette but the next day she called the show and told them that she couldn't go out with him because he creeped her out. True story.
When I was I'm middle school my gf had long distance and I didn't so when I wanted to talk to her I called her collect and screamed " call me back! " then hung up lol and if she didn't call back immediately I thought she hated me and was going to break up with me 😅😢😂
There are 4 MUST do bits left from Norm McDonald: 1) Professor of Logic, 2) The Moth joke, 3) Courtney Thorne Smith and 4) Andy Richter the Swedish German
I'd add his spots on Dennis Miller about (1) viagra, and (2) smoking / Joe Camel.
Google Cheers, Norm. When Norm walked into the bar, Everyone in there yell "Norm!!"
I would assume women are more likely to find Conan attractive than Norm. Shows what I know.
"You have a collect call from 'Bob Wehaddababy-Itzaboy.'"
"Don't know em." *click* "That was Bob, they had the baby, it's a boy."
That was our message system when I was growing up. Mom got many a call from "HomeAtNine" or "GoingToJimmy's". If she ever accepted the charges you knew you were in trouble
I love your love of all things Norm!
Dick has been a common shortened name for Richard in England for centuries. There are lots of other examples. My name is Robert and that can be shortened to Rob, Robbie, Bob, Bobby, Bert or Bertie. Also, as I'm Scottish you can also include Rab and Rabbie, so I have 9 names for the price of 1. I've often wondered if there is any other name that has so many possible variations.
Professional rambler is the best description of Norm I've ever heard :)
One of the funniest things Norm did on SNL - Cobras and Panthers. Please react to it! Love your channel.

the hilarious thing is that on The Dating Game one of the winners turned out to be a serial killer.
Yay NORM TY!
I was born in 1955. No spacecraft or satellites in outer space. Instead of calculators we had slide rules also called slip sticks. It was technology going back to the 1500s. Even in 1969 NASA and the astronauts were using ancient slide rules to get to the moon.

Go to Vegas for a weekend and you can relive those PPV memories lol. They make sure to monetize EVERYTHING in the hotels! I almost ordered Oppenheimer this past Christmas for like $30 thinking it was On Demand. It had already been available to rent and stream by then!
do you remember when we had to memorize phone numbers? there was no contacts list. your brain was the computer. a lost skill. so you could be carrying around a dozen numbers in your head. not every phone booth had a workable phone book.
There was a dating game, cant remember which one, that a serial killer was on
2 things, Norm was a deeply strong Christian.
my favorite quote of his is "its one thing to make people laugh, it is another to make them smile" he did both
When he was old he complained about people making fun of Christianity. Doesn't seem to be any evidence of it when he was younger.
Norm is Genie Ass!! I'm sure it's been communicated but on CHEERS they have a character named Norm and everytime he walked in the whole bar would say N O R M!!! Great Reaction Britt!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
Who remembers buying time cards at the store to call long distance? 😂
Richard got shortened to Rick, but it was hard to scream out when you're calling your mates. B and d sounds travel much farther.
That's also how William shortened to Bill.
You HAVE to do his set on Germany on David Letterman!
❤❤❤❤❤👍 gotta admit love the new hair style darlin keep up the outstanding work 👍
Thank you! Will do!
"Let's all have a moment of silence" she says before talking incessantly.
Decades ago,for years and years we answered the phone, and we never knew who it was when it would ring, not that kind of ring that you put around your finger, and then the phone would ring, not like a curtain ring you put on a rod,but back then, when the phone rang, shew, I didn't know if I was ever going to get through this story, but back then we the phone would ring, not like that kind of ring around the toilet, but coming from the wall, when the phone would ring, not like the ring around the roses.
Bless your heart if anyone read this to the end.lol
You need to look up Norm on Dennis Miller show when Miller was on HBO in the 90's. It's so damn funny.
I used to file my taxes by phone. Call IRS, “press 1 to enter your taxable income in box one and then press pound”. As long as the curly phone cord didn’t disconnect, it worked fine. True story. But it was always weird when a cable guy showed up 5 minutes later offering hijacked porn.
He Put MIke Myers in one of his movies.
When he talks about dating shows and serial killers is talking about the famous Rodney Alcala
probably started when someone named Richard in the 50's... was the person used to say, don't be like... just so happens people took, "Don't be a Dick." the wrong way.
I heard that it was started by a guy named Peter.
😂 There was a time with 5 TV channels and rabbit 🐰 ears 🤪🤔 .... We've come along way .....✌️😎❤️
Thanks!
When I was young my mom always would ask me when I was going out if I had a quarter for the phone if I needed it.
Richard -> Rich -> Dick
Robert -> Rob -> Bob
William -> Will -> Bill
Why thou?
I am a swede and really don't get the dick part. Why not rick?
And ofc. When did dick started meaning penis
But can you explain John -> Jack?
Jonathan -> John -> Jack?
@@scottNNJ Patty -> nick nack patty whack -> Jack
How did we get from Richard to Dick? How did we get from William to Bill? How did we get from Robert to Bob? It comes from the ancient origins of the names, mostly. William was a form of Wilhelm or Vilhelm, and V is pronounced in some languages as B, so... Bill? I don't know how it developed exactly, but it makes little sense to modern people.
We all have a crush on Norn
Hilarious that you found Norm hansomer with each video then admitted that you watched him in reverse chrono lol!
As a fellow Richard, I too would like to know how the ball rolled down the ski slope!
Brit we have robots and helicopters on other planets that we control remotely from here.
Also there’s guys out there named Richard Smoker.
boo boo, pay per view and online renting IS THE SAME THANG!!!!!
So, this is how William became Bill, Robert became Bob, and how Richard became Dick. In short, during the Middle Ages, there was a trend where people were giving people with these names a simple letter swap nickname. So, Will became Bill, Rob became Bob, and Rick became Dick.
Norm was one of the main characters on Cheers. The other occupants of the bar would call out Norm!! every time he entered the bar. Here's a clip for reference: ruclips.net/video/VXED2AVlbR0/видео.htmlsi=BqeNAJnB66tId0ns
All in the Family was the sitcom of the 70's. Arguably Cheers was the sitcom of the 80's. Seinfeld of the 90's and the Office of the 2000's. Yeah, it's opinion, but it's popular opinion and I think the ratings probably reflect it.
It's just crazy to me that someone in their 30's or 20's has never heard of Cheers. I'm 47 lol. I think it's weird that young kids still have somehow heard of Bugs Bunny and WB's cartoons since those haven't been aired on TV for like ... 30 years now.
More norm
"Get to the story, Norm." That's funny. Norm MacDonald, another Canadian, NEVER got to the story. As I saw you noted later. (I just saw your comment you don't think anyone older than you is watching your channel, and you're talking about ordering a movie by dial-up telephone as ancient history. Too funny. God Girl. Are you serious? The first thing I saw on live TV was an American channel, live press conference, John Kennedy taking questions as president. That was the first time I saw tv that I recall. I might have seen something before that but we didn't get our own tv until years later. That was long before dial-up movies. Too funny. On the issue of when Richard was shortened to Dick, I remember a tv Cheers epiosde when Cliff Claven explained it. Apparently it all happened back in the days of King Richard the Lionhearted, who raised taxes on the peasants who muttered in their Cockney accents, "That Richard is a bit of a dick, in't he?"and when they all shortened "cockney" and "Richard" into "Dick" they made a big crusade about it. So now you know.
On the Richard/Dick/dick question, the specific reason for the leap to genitalia is lost to history, but most sources agree it started in the British military in the 1890s, with the name 'Dick' at that time being a name used as a sort of 'everyman' euphemism, similar to how a prostitute's customer is a 'John', or a male corpse whose name is not known is called a 'John Doe'. So for some reason, 'Dick', one of the more common male first names, began to be the go-to word among these rowdy male British soldiers, first just as a euphemism for a guy, then from there for their, er, uhm, favorite weapon. :)
As to Dick being short for Richard, that happened a few hundred years earlier, in the 12th/13th century, where it was a common social phenomenon to speak in what's been called 'rhyming slang', where one word was used for another word as a whimsical substitution because it rhymed. In the case of these names, 'Richard' was shortened to 'Rich', which over time acquired the alternate pronunciation 'Rick' (presumably because 'ch' in some words is often pronounced as 'k'), and from then the rhyming slang of the day took 'Rick' and substituted 'Dick'. 'Dick' caught on as a diminutive for Richard, eventually became a common name, until those British soldiers appropriated this rather common first name for their... ulterior purposes.... :)
One of those shows was called Candid Camera. Check that out I guess.
Try the Norm Joke dirty Johnny if you haven’t yet. It’s one of my favorites of Norms.
What bugs me is the future to come but it is better than no future.
Rodney Alcala, the serial killer, was on a dating show, you can react to his episode
