This is one of the songs that you could consider a traditional song in California. It’s our bluegrass. We don’t play the East Coast stuff, not because it’s not great; it just doesn’t come from our part of the world. Out here in the west kids grow up playing rock ‘n’ roll, not Erie Canal or Barbara Allen or even stuff from the 50s and 60s that was popular. So rock ‘n’ roll is our folk music. That’s a big difference from the east where the folk music tradition has been going on for over 400 years (which also includes many many great artists and writers). Simply put, we haven’t populated the West long enough to have a serious folk culture…until now.
I spent 12 years playing on the island of Maui and this recording is from Wailea at the Four Seasons where I had an Americana gig for a couple of years.
