Dermot Morgan who played Father Ted was a genius, taken from us far too soon, just as he had found the perfect role for his comedic talent too, I am sure this show would have led to even bigger and greater things for him. This came about from real life. Ireland won the Eurovision in 92, 93 and 94. The winning country hosts the event the following year. It was rumored that it was so expensive to host that Ireland purposely put a shit song entry so they wouldn't have to host it again.
Funnily enough the year this was made, 1996 is actually the last time Ireland really won the Eurovision.

This episode is actually based on a real life conspiracy theory. Ireland is the most successful country in winning The Eurovision Song Contest. The problem is that if you win the contest, then you have to host the contest the following year. It is a very expensive event to host, so the the theory was that Ireland started to select acts for the Euros that were not very good, so that they would lose and not have to host the competition again. Its a great episode.

My favourite part of the real life story is that one year a committee selected a song they believed would lose but not in a too-obvious way and it won. In ironic fashion we now can't win no matter how hard we try because most of the voting is politically motivated. The last one is a perfect example, Ukraine won. Everyone voted for them to stick it to Russia.

    • @Dreyno
      @Dreyno Год назад +5

@@ciaranconlon84 It’s not even political. It’s countries with zero history of producing any decent popular music judging countries that have a long history of it, harshly. Watching an Irish or British or Swedish or French song being battered because people in countries that have never produced a single band worthy of note, prefer a techno/rap/throat singing mashup with a massively elaborate dance routine and light show. It’s always been ridiculous and pointless. Now it’s sort of annoying as well.

As jim is I said, this episode was based on Ireland continually winning the Eurovision Song Contest. The “downside” is that the winners host the following year’s venue, and this was costing Ireland a fortune. Consequently in one year (if memory serves), they put up a mediocre song which they knew wouldn’t win.
I must add that, although not an entry, in 1994, during the interval the Dublin hosts put on what can only be described as a breathtaking display. If you’re not familiar with it, I strongly suggest you watch a RUclips video of Riverdance. It brought the house down. Ironically, the winners of the contest were unfortunately overshadowed by this interval act. The winners (from Ireland - again - were Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan singing Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids. It was unfortunate in that this song, which broke the record as the highest scoring entry in The Eurovision Song Contest was eclipsed by the interval performance of Riverdance.

As anyone who's watched Eurovision knows, they do it by voting country. Each country takes it in turns awarding how many points to each other country. So you'd never see any country being given successive points like that...creative licence, but necessarily funny!

In the early 1990s we won the contest three times in a row, the first country to do that and afterwards it was noticeable that the quality of the entries declined (because it cost our broadcasters too much money to stage). So this is an exaggerated version of reality and it’s feckin hilarious 😂

The winners of each year's competition host the next show, and Ireland had won the Eurovision in 1992, 93, 94 and 96, it was becoming increasingly expensive for us keep hosting over and over. The conspiracy is that we'd put forward a crap act to represent us to intentionally lose.

As others have said, Ireland was winning the Eurovision song contest at an unprecedented rate in the 1990's, with a still held record achievement of having won it three years in a row. Hosting the competition is enormously expensive (to the point that some countries didn't even bother participating this past year) and it was really starting to beggar the state to have to do it. All of a sudden and rather suspiciously, the quality of Ireland's songs to the contest began to dip from that point on. Coincidence! Also the dream sequence is parodying an incredibly cheesy Irish entry to Eurovision from back in the 1970's, with an almost shot for shot take with them in the swimming pool. Hilarious :)

The Divine Comedy who wrote My Lovely Horse also wrote the theme tune and they are well worth listening to, and if you want something even more obscure try The Duckworth Lewis Method the same singer but just singing songs about cricket.

I only know this from a great Documentary featuring the writers and much of the cast of FT 'Small, Far Away', link below, it's a MUST SEE. Wait until you've finished the series though!
The 'My Lovely Horse' video (sort of presented as a dream) was inspired according to Linehan by the real life 1975 Ireland Eurovision entry _That's What Friends Are For_ by The Swarbriggs' (an Irish duo brother combo group). They tried as best they could to recreate the video shot for shot! 🤣

My favourite episode and a timeless classic, especially if you've ever seen Eurovision.
The Divine Comedy were heavily involved in this episode and 'My Lovely Horse' is brilliantly bad.
If you like the theme tune you should look up 'Songs of Love' by The Divine Comedy, which was adapted for the show.

"Same happens with psychiatrists" - I'm sure it does but I doubt that it's common. After all, they'd potentially lose their license. Not that many can be that dumb to risk that.
What probably does happen regularly is that they talk about problems in an anonymized manner. Which I think is understandable and fine, since they are humans too and need to get things off their chest.
