    Thank you for the transparency through good and bad! I am learning so much these past couple of months from watching your videos from the beginning and will continue through them to get to current content. We just got our first 10 chicks over the weekend. I love spending time with them everyday, they are so much fun!

      Thank you so much. It’s awesome to hear that the content is helping. That’s my whole goal. Helping others and connecting with great people has been amazing. Congratulations on the chicks. They’re so fun. The last week or two in the brooder isn’t too pleasant but it’s a short lived time. Hopefully the videos get better as you go because I legit knew nothing about making videos in the beginning so my editing / audio skills have slowly improved.

    Stan, glad to hear Big Mama is making progress and that you got some hang-time with Little Man. All in all I would say it's a good day. Thanks for sharing the good, bad and the ugly when it comes to homesteading. It's all just part of the reality of learning as you go and admitting that you don't know everything even though you're knee deep into making it happen. I appreciate the fact that you don't focus on the polished RUclips version of life like so many people do. Keep it real, and, as always, stay safe my friend.

      You’re right it certainly was a good day. I felt like I was finally able to relax a little that evening. Each morning I’d walk out there wondering if she’d not make it and this day was a relief. We’ve now had two good days in a row. I still have so much to learn and these experiences certainly create those opportunities. Appreciate it

    You’re doing a great job. The fact you did a rectal on a pig and have been injecting her daily…..whew! Impressive. The blistering could be related to mastitis. Have you sent pics of the sores to the vet. Because it looks very close to staph(which is still an infection). It may be worth culturing. And don’t touch them, highly contagious. Great information and you’re right, we are better off sharing these experiences and learning from one another.

      I haven’t sent pictures but I have cleaned them with an iodine drench in addition to the antibiotics so hopefully that will address it if that is the case. She’s had 2 good days in a row now to hopefully we’re still heading in the right direction

    Thank you for sharing all of this information. Hopefully no one has to go through this with their pig, but I feel the video would be very valuable if having the same issue. Keep up the good work! And give Big Mama a scratch for me please!

    1. I am so happy to hear some good news about Big Mama! Small progress is still progress and hopefully she’s on the uphill now. Her piggy babies are so stinking cute.
    2. I for one appreciated the transparency on your instagram, I don’t have pigs, have no intentions of getting pigs, and my knowledge on pigs is minimal to none. HOWEVER, you were absolutely right that sharing what for some could be sensitive or hard to see video of her in a fragile state is reality. It also was an opportunity for you to reach out on one of your platforms to see if anyone could offer any help/ advice on the situation. This entire situation was a great learning opportunity for any future emergencies you or others may run into. We all learn as we grow, and that’s definitely what’s happening for you.
    Keep us posted on Big Mama! I’ll continue to send her well wishes and prayers!

      When we got to the end of 48 hours with no noticeable improvement I really thought things were going to end bad. To see the change she’s made in the last 24 has been great. Lots learned and I’m still holding on to hope that she’ll continue to improve. It’s been a roller coaster but great people like yourself along for the ride makes it a bit easier. Thank you!!

    Appreciate the update, thank you for sharing the updates on big mama and also your observations. We just got some kunes in ourselves and i'll keep an eye out when our pregnant one births.

      Congratulations on the Kunes. They’re wonderful. I can’t imagine raising any other breed for our property. They’re a perfect fit for us. If you ever have questions regarding them, let me know and I’ll do my best to assist. I’m not a professional but I’ve learned some stuff through the 3 years we’ve raised them.

    Stan, we appreciate you! I am amping up my garden this year in a big way - I got a cheap green house which ended up flying away and ruining many of my starts. We also had a very late spring so I couldn't get plants in the ground when I should normally have been able to. You learn as you go - I told my husband, next year, we will have a proper greenhouse. I am hoping to add animals in the coming years, maybe meat birds and then someday, pigs! Praying for all of you and your precious family.

    • @RockyCreekHomestead
      @RockyCreekHomestead  2 года назад

      Oh man sorry about the green house. They will blow away quick. Ours only stays because I have it tied down to the deck with old bailing twine. Even in big storms I’ve pushed our patio table up against it just in case. I’m behind on getting the garden in the ground but it will get done. Keep your head up and keep pressing forward. Something will be better than nothing. Wishing you best with your garden and thank you for the support. Take care!

    I was going to say mastitis before you did. I’m a dog breeder and the first thing i noticed was her larger front teats just from her walking around. So glad to hear she’s doing better. It’s so scary when this happens and they can’t tell you what is wrong.

      Appreciate you giving some feedback. Since this was our first time we definitely didn’t know what to look for. On a positive note, we learned so much through this hurdle and hopefully are much more prepared and proactive next time. Thanks for watching and appreciate the insight.

    Meloxicam is an anti-inflammatory for pain management, mostly arthritis.

    • @RockyCreekHomestead
      @RockyCreekHomestead  2 года назад

      Thank you. It and the Benamine were new medications for me and I wanted to get them into her as quickly as possible so I hadn’t done in depth research. Vet just told me the Benamine was for reducing the swelling and the meloxicam would be for her pain. Appreciate the information. Take care.

    Another reason its good to show what and why antibiotics are given to livestock. Its not something that is given on a regular basis, Its used when its needed. Farmers big or small dedicate a peace of themselves, and their lives, to making sure our animals are looked after. So it should be, the animals look to us for what they need. I don't care about people wanting Organic, no antibiotics, If its needed I will give it to them.
    Big Momma reminds me of the sow in the Movie Big Little farm, They changed her name from Ugly Betty to Emma. If you haven't seen the Movie you should have a look, Its a good one.

      @RockyCreekHomestead  2 года назад +1

      We watched that movie a couple years ago. It’s a really great story and you are right, she is alot like that pig. I completely forgot about that. I completely agree that there’s a time and place for antibiotics. I am confident she wouldn’t be with us right now had we not intervened.

    Bentonite clay is good for mastitis. Not sure what to do about a deep wound though? Iodine and clay doesn’t seem to be working that well. :(

      Never heard of that. Good to know. I’ll have to do some research on it. Thanks for sharing.
