Hi Chad, The difference is the diameter. 4x is larger then 5x and 6x would be smaller then 5x and so on. The same is true in the other direction 3x is larger then 4x. To determine the X size of your tippet take the size hook and divide by 3. A size 12 fly would use a 4x tippet. A size 14 would use a size 5x (5x3=15) a size 18 would use a size 6x, and a size 20 - 22 would a 7x. You want to taper your tippet to make it longer. That is why I used a 4x and a 5x. Jim
The butt section is furled leader, on the end of that I normally start with 3x three feet then 4x three feet then 5x three feet. this makes the entire leader 12 or 13 feet.

Jim,
Do you use a furled leader of mono or thread? What is the length? Do you furl your own?
Thanks for the vids and info
My furled leader is mono, it is a BlueSky Furled leader. It is about 7 feet long.
Thanks Ron!
