I watched this video years ago when I was teaching myself to knit. I’d forgotten how funny the first 5 minutes were! I have the book and got it out tonight to refresh my memory and why I looked your videos. I know you’re withdrawing now from teaching but thanks so much for leaving all this on RUclips.
Cheryl, I think it was in the 70's I bought a Bond knitting machine and you taught me how to make sweaters. Must have made 100 sweaters over the years for my 3 boys. Great to see your videos. I am 84 and do not knit much but you were a great teacher.
Hi Cheryl I started knitting again early last year having learnt the basics (knit/purl/cast on/ cast off) as a child -which unfortunately was quite some time ago!! Your videos “Sweater Knitting 101” and “How to Knit a Sweater” helped me move on from knitting just scarves to more complex projects. I have finished a sweater (my first big project) for my husband, and am currently on a cardigan for myself. My main area of concern had been joining up the shoulder seams, side seams and attaching the sleeves. However your videos made all of this easy, and my seams are virtually invisible. I am particularly grateful to the tips on the shoulder bindings, More or Less formula (which admittedly did take a bit of time for me to get my head around), and Left & Right Leaning decreases which have proved invaluable. Thank you.
You are welcome Theresa Green. I'm so glad your finishing has improved because it really is the key to being satisfied with a sweater. And thank you for watching and commenting.
I am VERY glad you have these videos still available online! I have your book, have had it for years, bought from Schoolhouse Press. Got sidetracked and only now starting to want to make sweaters for the grandchildren, etc. This is going to help me enormously! Cannot understand why you never got more press… your writings and explanations seem wonderful… like Elizabeth Zimmerman!
Thank you for answering promptly Cheryl. As it turns out Michael's, I think they are national, has their Lyon yarn on sale this week so I will get minimum 450 yrs. light color #4 today. How much fun. Thank you so much for your generous online class!
Thank you for this lovely comment Tracy. No . . . I don't really try to be intentionally funny. That's just how I talk, that Midwest plain spoken, "Oh fer cryin' out loud, be sensible here." It was how my mother and grandmother talked. Apparently they had an influence on me.
I don't know if you intend to be funny in this wonderful video, (I learned a great deal, BTW) but while talking about the 12" chest measurement, as you are putting down the puppet, you say something like, how children do grow, after all, especially if you feed them... I cracked up, almost spit out my drink as you said that.! Thank you for all these fine videos, your talents are so gratefully appreciated...as well as your very dy humor!!
Cheryl, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! You just made my life go from 'It CAN'T BE THIS DIFFICULT' to AWWWWW, I finally found a someone that makes IT EASY!!! I'm doing my Christmas gifts now, and inherit some baby yarn and Caron Soft yarn. Love your lesson. BRAVO!!!! God bless Love!!! Thank YOU again!!!
Getting ready to start my sweater. I've been knitting and crocheting for over 50 years and gauge has always been my nemesis. This could be life changing. :)
You are a gem Cheryl! Thank you so much for teaching this concept to us. It is critical to understand the process in order to make garments that fit. I used to follow patterns only to be deeply disappointed with the result. Being self taught, those were tough and discouraging lessons. I wish I had known of you in my first forays. So thank you for this essential information that every knitter should start with. ❤❤❤
Hi Cheryl, Perfect timing, I just started to read your book. I am all the way through the preface & your charm is evident! I am just ready to start knitting a sweater & I am going to follow your class first. Thank you so much.
I'm using probably what the Craft Yarn Council would call #4 but #3 will work fine. The only difference is that you'll have more knitting to do with a #3 than with a #4 because it's finer and you'll need more stitches. Not a problem with this pattern. Yes on the color and smooth texture.
Thank you so much, found PDF and now have the pattern to follow. Now I,m off to knit my dreaded gauge swatch. You make it look and sound real easy, just hope that I'm a quick study, and you have the patience for my silly ?'s.
Relax and you don't have to rush or be a quick study. Take your time to absorb it, and more, enjoy it. I think most of us get a little thrill when we learn something new or try something new and have it work. I know I do. Have a great time!
I have about 18 hard bound copies of Sweater 101 left, and then I won't reprint. It's been in print for 30 years and I'm done schlepping books. The eBook version will stay available much longer. They're available here: www.cherylbrunette.com/the-sweater-101-book/
I just ordered your book from amazon tonight. I can't wait for it to arrive so I can do my math and start my first sweater. Thank you for your videos these will go great with the book.
when making a gauge or swatch , how many rows and stitches will be sufficient to get a good reading ? i am very NEW to knitting but your videos have got me wanting to try a sweater. Thank you very much
Hello Miss Cheryl. About the 12" chest measurement, I was going to knit a sweater for my daughter's friend's child. She was four. Her measurements were given to me as 11" chest, 11" waist, and 11" hips. I said "no way". Told my daughter to go measure her and lo and behold that girl was indeed 11". Couldn't believe it.
Hi Cheryl, Please if you ONLY have some spare time could you do a short video for a V neck sweater as well as the placement of the neck band? How to decrease on ribbing, the Knit side and especially the Purl side. Thankyou in advance. You fan from France. Hugs xxx
Knittyneeds OK Knittingneeds. I'm not quite sure what it is you need. How to shape the V-neck? How to pick up and rib around it? As for decreasing in ribbing . . . what kind of rib? 1 x 1? I just need a better picture of what's giving you trouble. I hope you will come join my new knitting group at cherylbrunette.com. The goal is for you all to help shape my programming going forward.
Hi Cheryl, Very many thanks for your kind reply. A real dummy in V neck. How to shape the V neck, How to pick up and rib around it... in fact everything. I've been knitting only round necks coz the V neck wasn't easy. I would have loved to attend your classes but I live in France. Big hugs from your fan. xxx
julie henderson Thank you for watching and commenting Julie. That information is in my book, SWEATER 101, sweater101.com/ I will be making a new "Make Sweaters That Fit" video series, based on the book, in which you design a master pattern that fits your measurements, your yarn, your gauge for a classic fitting, crew-neck, set-in sleeve sweater. It becomes your master pattern from which you can develop many variations. That series will be ready for purchase by the end of this summer I hope.
Hi Cheryl These videos are wonderful and I do not knit. I learned to crochet 50 years ago in parochial school but never pursued it after that. I am picking it up again and wondered if your book Sweater 101 can be used for crocheting. I would love to adapt my own patterns. I hope you are well.
I am recently working on a cardigan for my baby and I have decided to add sleeves to one of my existing sleeveless vest type cardigan. But I am not sure how I should knit the sleeve tops - the sleeves I want to add are set-in sleeves (a bell shaped ones). How do I make sure the height and the decrease rows? Please give me your advice. I really want to finish the project before this fall. Thank you for your great videos for lots of help~~
Hi Irene. This is the one of the most complicated questions in sweater making-- how to design a sleeve cap and all the variations that go with it. I can't possibly answer that question in a comment but I addressed it tin Sweater 101 and I will expand the information in Sweater 102 due out in late September (barring any more family events that require my intense time and attention.) You can get Sweater 101 at Sweater101.com and I hope you'll come to cherylbrunette.com and join my email newsletter group. That's where I'm in closest touch with knitters. Oh. And you are most welcome and thanks for watching and commenting.
Hi Cheryl, Strong of your encouragements, i have decided to make this sweater for my nephew. My first sweater (im already sweating)... but im french and couldnt find a proper size conversion... i have to make this fit. Wht is childs 1 .... in france we count in age. It seems to me from how u hold it that it for a 24 months old child... am i right? Thank you.
meripyare Sizes for children are variable and a bit arbitrary, mais oui, je crois que this size is suitable for a 24 month old. I always make children's sweaters larger than they need at the moment because they grow so fast. Merci bien for watching and commenting. (I have silly remnants of college French).
Hi Cheryl Thanks a lot for the wonderful video knitting guidance. I am new knitter just have knitted two scarfs. I have 2 yrs old gilr would love to knit sweater for her . Could you please let me do you have another tutorial videos of simple knitting sweater for a girl. It will be great if you just share the links. Thanks a lot for your guidance
Hi Cheryl, I just wanted to share, that recently I found an Android application which automatically recalculates the number of stitches and rows on the base of your gauge compared the original gauge of the pattern. It helps with the calculations for all of us slightly mathematically impaired :)
Elżbieta Jaskulska That sounds like a wonderful tool for some people. I don't have such a device (Android) and I have an old-fashioned approach to arithmetic. I like to do it by hand with a pencil though I do use a calculator and computer at times too. Thank you for sharing. And for watching and commenting.
Last year I sent a message regarding how much yarn to purchase when using a pattern from your book. You mentioned that you had a chart that you used for class and was going to put it on line to be downloaded. Was this ever put it on line? If so, I must have missed it and would love to receive a copy. Thanks for all your help...
I am an advanced knitter but have always used printed patterns. I have enjoyed and learned a great deal from your videos. Since I love traditional, classic sweaters in beautiful yarns, I have trouble finding patterns. I have your book (Sweater 101) but have never made my own pattern yet. My basic question is: how do you know how much yarn to purchase?
+Mary Carlene Dunne Hi Mary. Go to cherylbrunette.com and join my newsletter knitting group and then shoot me an email. There are lots of online resources and I did a chart for a limited number of sizes for my live Sweater 101 classes. I can send it to you, and I really need to put it online for people to download.
This will probably be a bit small for a 3-year old but I have information on lots of sizes in Sweater 101 (www.sweater101.com) And have you joined my email newsletter group at cherylbrunette.com yet? If not, please consider joining us. You'll get lots of good information.
I I just let them get what they want to as long as its in their size I don't have stuff looking like that I own 4 long sleeve shirts and about 3 or 4 pairs of pants. But I have knitted most of my clothes knitting is my favorite pass time
This all sounds brilliant, I'm a handspinner so often yarn comes out in different weights, I can't find your book for sale in uk under £60.... is this the normal cost?
That's high. A first quality book, hard-bound, is US $32. but the shipping from here, at its least expensive, is $34. There is the eBook option which many buyers outside the US choose. See www.sweater101.com for more details.
Your grandchildren have more fashion sense than I do. I have 6 black turtlenecks in various weights and a few red things. Well . . . a little more but not much.
You can use a circular needle, 24" or so. It depends on the size of the yarn you're using and whether or not the sts fit on the needle you're using. There are no "rules." Just use what works.
I thought I specified that in the video. 36 sts and 6" worth of rows should be enough. Have you joined my email newsletter group at cherylbrunette.com yet? If not, please consider joining us. You'll get lots of good information.
This is a very large and machine-specific question. I cannot answer it in the scope of comments on RUclips. It would require you hiring me for a private consultation and I have no available time right now for Skype consultations. Sorry.
I don't see the pdf here. BTW Do you have a reference for a simple fast square sweater with a crew sort of neck for a 12 year old boy? I can cast on, knit and pearl, and bind off, but my first sweater for my grandaughter was a disaster.
The pdf is linked in the description below the video. Click on the "show more" option. As for the simple fast sweater for a 12 year old? My opinion is that it's best to learn the basics from Sweater 101, the book, and build your own pattern based on your own gauge. You have all the skills you need to make a beautiful sweater that fits but be willing to grant yourself some more learning room. There are 2 aets of skills . . . basic knitting and . . . shaping and making garment pieces. Go ahead and make this whole sweater and you will learn much.
Hi Cheryl I love your videos! I have been commissioned to knit a sweater coat for a friend. She is paying me for this so it MUST be correct! She wants a hood for this sweater coat and I have NO idea how to do such a thing. It seems easy enough but this must be done correctly. What is the basic procedure for making the hood and then getting it onto the sweater coat? Is it best to make the hood as part of the coat or make the hood separate and attach it to the sweater?
Barbara Rickman Hi Barbara . . . I left a message for you in my comments page on the website you left it on. Basically I said make the coat first then pick up and knit the hood. It might even be better for you to make them separately and sew them together because that gives you more flexibility at the end.I don't do commission work though I did some in the past. It's stressful work at any time but even more so when you agree to do something beyond your skills. It's especially stressful if you make a promise to a friend. Take a deep breath and research a bunch of patterns. I would have to do the same thing as I have not made a hooded sweater in years. In my case I would do a gauge swatch and cast my own pattern using Sweater 101. You might be able to find a pattern that will work for you. Wishing you good hunting.
Sorry Chreyl! I so computer/website illiterate! I forgot where I went to post this message and could not find it again!! (stupid) I have asked so many folks what to do I got all confused and forgot where I had been before. Thank you for your reply though. I appreciate it. I am knitting for commission again after 28 years of not doing so for the reasons you state, but now I MUST. It is the only source of income I have now that I can't work. I have the time so I am back to this kind of work again. This friend really wants this coat and has wanted one for may years. She is older than me and has little very little money to spend. She wanted to give her money to someone here in the USA who she knows, trusts and has contact with.As she put it "I don't know who makes my food, but at least I will know who made the one item I have wanted for years". A challenge is always good for us older folks. It makes us think and takes away idle time. I have had to learn a lot about the internet just preparing for this project. I have had to stretch my brain and put fear aside. So, all in all, this has not been a bad thing. I am finding more Americans don't want things made overseas anymore because of the poor quality. If this works out as I think it will, I plan to do more commissions. God Bless You and thank you for your help! Barb R.
Barbara Rickman Because you've done this work before, you already have considerable skill I'm guessing. Now with the internet you can find out how to do anything while at home. I even fixed a sagging door the other day with some 3" screws. I suggest that you join Ravelry and explore back issues of Knitty magazine. Both are free sites with a wealth of information. Take good notes on your research about hoods: 1) How is the neckline of the sweater or coat shaped? 2) How is the hood attached? 3) How is the hood shaped? If you look at 10 or so patterns and take this information you should be able to figure it out. And, yes, this is a great opportunity to build skills as you build your new business.
You tried the link above, right? If it doesn't work for you, then copy and paste it into a new browser tab. If you still don't think you have it check your download folder. It downloads automatically in Firefox for me.
The book Sweater 101 has the measurements you would need to make this in 30 different sizes. It's available at sweater101.com. Have you joined my email newsletter group at cherylbrunette.com yet? If not, please consider joining us.
Are you signed up here Saadah? at howtoknitasweater.com ? Once you have access there is a link to the next step under each video. Also, there is the whole list of parts on the column to the right.
+Maya Wypych I don't know. I just checked the link and it worked for me. Try copying this link and pasting it into your browser and see if that helps: howtoknitasweater.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Drop-Shoulder-Packet-1.pdf Let me know.
I love this. I appreciate that you have put this info out for us- your public. I AM going to learn how to do this. My knitting guru friend will then have more time to do things other than answer my questions. THANK YOU THANK YOU But I have to tell you - your toddler friend's hamster puppet is a little hedgehog. They are really cute.
Thank you for this kind comment Candi and you are most welcome. Actually, no. The puppet really in a hamster according to its tag which also has information on hamsters. But I'm guessing the company uses the same pattern for its hedgehog puppets and just puts a furry head and back on it. I hope you'll come to cherylbrunette.com and join my email newsletter group if you haven't done so already. That's where I'm in closest touch with knitters.
I was fooled by the little face & coloring, but, of course a child's puppet would be soft & hedgehogs have little 'quills'. See you on your web-site! *** Glorious * Holidays,** may happiness * follow you all the days of your life. *****
+Marilyn Kolako You are so welcome Marilyn. Have you joined my newsletter group over at www.cherylbrunette.com yet? I don't send out that many emails but I like to think they are worth reading. That's where I connect to knitters in a closer way and they get to tell me what they need. Please join us.
+Knitting with Cheryl Brunette Yes it works now. I'm not sure either. Yesterday when I clicked the link it took me to a "oops couldn't find what you're looking for" sort of message on your website. All is well now, I'm surprised no one else mentioned it. I am a beginner so I'm just watching and learning at the moment. Practicing the various stitches, casting on, binding off etc. I need a nice hobby and I love crafting so this is actually quite fun. I used to help my mother crochet when I was a kid and now I'm 40, she is gone and the thing I want to learn to do is eventually make a throw blanket with her name on it or something along those lines. I will call it a memorial blanket. She was good at sewing too. Anyway, thanks for your reply and fixing the link. By the way I'm struggling a little bit with the concept of guage.
+Benjamin Schiltz Vlogs Now I answered this on my full comments page and don't see the answer here. Ugh. Try it now. It should work. And I haven't a clue how it went south.

Klavdiya Gladysheva
No, although I have personally adapted some techniques in Sweater 101 to circular, neck down sweaters.

If you make two 4" swatches you can sew those up to make baby shoes. I believe I sew this idea on Knitting Daily.
sewfuntosew11 Great idea! Thank you.
I can send it to you, and I really need to put it online for people to download.
i will try to do it with you! It will be my first one. I have a 3 year old, and i would like to make that for her.... thanks.
But I have knitted most of my clothes knitting is my favorite pass time
Can this polo be knitted on the ultimate sweater machine?
Everything but the collar at the end. I'm not sure you could stretch the neckline out far enough. Everything else would be easy on a machine.
How old are they?
I have been looking for your book sweaters 101. I can't find it anywhere. Can you tell me where it is available for purchase?.
+Lynnie Barre sweater101.com/
This all sounds brilliant, I'm a handspinner so often yarn comes out in different weights, I can't find your book for sale in uk under £60.... is this the normal cost?
That's high. A first quality book, hard-bound, is US $32. but the shipping from here, at its least expensive, is $34. There is the eBook option which many buyers outside the US choose. See www.sweater101.com for more details.
Thank you, I thought it seemed a little expensive, I'll have a look at the website for ereader version although I do like physical books x
Your grandchildren have more fashion sense than I do. I have 6 black turtlenecks in various weights and a few red things. Well . . . a little more but not much.
Hey Cheryl. I've been wondering if I have 100+ stitches per row, then I should use a long needle? Or is there other alternative way? Thank you. :)
You can use a circular needle, 24" or so. It depends on the size of the yarn you're using and whether or not the sts fit on the needle you're using. There are no "rules." Just use what works.
Thanks. :)
How many co should I do for my swatch, how many rows and do I make in stockenett?
I thought I specified that in the video. 36 sts and 6" worth of rows should be enough. Have you joined my email newsletter group at cherylbrunette.com yet? If not, please consider joining us. You'll get lots of good information.
How do you transfer this pattern from hand knit to machine knit on a Brother 836 knitting machine?
Hi Cheryl
I love your videos!
I cannot get PDF link to get pages that are necessary to see and follow along.
You tried the link above, right? If it doesn't work for you, then copy and paste it into a new browser tab. If you still don't think you have it check your download folder. It downloads automatically in Firefox for me.
I am wanting to make a sweater but I need to make a bigger size than the pattern is as written. How do I go about doing this?
The book Sweater 101 has the measurements you would need to make this in 30 different sizes. It's available at sweater101.com. Have you joined my email newsletter group at cherylbrunette.com yet? If not, please consider joining us.
Goodmorning Cheryl, I am from Holland ...I think jou talk about inches..is that right?
Yes Gerrie. The metric system makes so much more sense. Forgive us. Just multiply inches by 2.54 to get cm.
Thank you very much!
What's ur book called. ?

Knitting with Cheryl Brunette
No.....wasnt aware I needed to sign up. Will do and tq for your prompt reply
And you're most welcome.
Hi there, wondering will your sweater101 work on USM as well? thanks :)
Yes. In fact, that's what caused me to write it in the first place. I was knitting so fast I didn't want to pick through a written pattern.
how many you cast on per inch how i measure inches for cast on???
+Meena Moeen Watch the videos. I tell you, step-by-step what to do.
I tried to sign up with the only email I have and was unable to do so, any ideas?
Send me your email at cb@cherylbrunette.com and I'll add you manually. Sorry for the problem. That happens in about every 500th person.
Why can''t I download the pattern PDF? Click on the link, and nothing happens :( Help!
where did u get your book sweater 101
+Marilyn Kolako I wrote it. :) Also available here: sweater101.com/
Thank you, great teacher
+Marilyn Kolako You are so welcome Marilyn. Have you joined my newsletter group over at www.cherylbrunette.com yet? I don't send out that many emails but I like to think they are worth reading. That's where I connect to knitters in a closer way and they get to tell me what they need. Please join us.
To find the tools Cheryl mentions in her video, look above on the "About" tab and click on the links: sweater101.com and howtoknitasweater.com.
Thanks Patty.
the handout link is broken.
+Benjamin Schiltz Vlogs sorry Benjamin. Thanks for pointing it out. Let me see what happened as it was working only a couple of days ago.
+Benjamin Schiltz Vlogs Try it now. I have no idea what went wonky.
+Benjamin Schiltz Vlogs And thanks for catching it and pointing it out to me.
A minimum of 34 sts wide and 6 inches deep.
I have

I thought that was a rather funny comment!
Well. After all I am behind the camera not in front
