Picture a 12 year old boy sitting in the Opera House in San Francisco in 1948 listening to this played by the San Francisco Symphony and Chorus under the direction of Pierre Monteux. That 12 year old boy was me and I was there because my father regularly got free tickets to the Symphony from the drawer in the Musician's Union in San Francisco. On a regular basis my Dad would come home from the "union" with a stack of symphony tickets for his "long-hair" son. (My father was a career jazz clarinet/tenor sax performer in dinner clubs in the city.) The waves of transcendental music washing over me at the threshold of my love affair with classical music! From moments like this, my earthly eyes looked into heavenly realms and I decided to become a classical pianist. Ah, Debussy! Ah, Pierre Monteux! How lucky I was and I never looked back!!!
@@bpowell875 We are talking 1948 here. The war had been over for three years. We were in a secure time of our existence! Crime was not an issue at this time because I was able to take a bus to the SF Symphony and back home after the concert which was late for a 12 year old. I also walked to movie theaters when I went to movies either during the week (sometime in the darkness of night) or early Saturday morning (for a kiddie matinee) or Sunday afternoon. Never a problem, not even fear of reckless drivers. Ah, the arts could thrive at a time when America was safe for its citizens. The movies and the fact that people went to movies multiple times a week in total expectation of complete safety. Where have these happy, simple times gone? Times change and so do people.
gosh so many years ago I used to listen to the nocturnes until very late at night. Listening takes me immediately back to that time period. I literally used to listen to Debussy every single night. It was like dreaming while still being awake. This music has a PROFOUND effect on me. Perhaps only next to Bach, Debussy is my 2nd favorite composer of all time
This is one of the most beautiful pieces I have heard in a good long while! Never really listened to a lot of Debussy, but now I am totally hooked. This beautiful song turned a bad day around, and made it lovely, instead.

never have experienced such a beautiful match of music and pictures--we were desperately seeking the sirens--the sea, the creatures and me even the man o war from portugal
Dolly, my thoughts exactly. I think it would be wonderful to have surround sound and a panoramic view on screen of a ship on the ocean bobbing along and then seeing sights of rocky crags in the distance....and maybe a computer version of a mermaid here and there....lol
Now here's a concept, why can't the folks at Disney make a new kind of Fantasia style movie based around Debussy's finest work ? To include this beautiful piece & many others of course. Just saying that's all.

This piece, the 3rd mvmt of the Nocturnes , has always, for me, had a mood elevating and hypnotic character. I could listen to it all day and all night. This is what the real Sirenes, if they had existed, would have intended. I'd love an extended version, an hour long.
It's a whole orchestra and full ladies' choir, yet so simple. There's beauty, yet a feeling of dread. You're drawn in to your downfall. Debussy managed to catch the feeling in less than ten minutes.
The music fits the sea theme because both are mysterious and beautiful. The sea is mysterious but not scary or sinister, and I think this piece compliments that.
Lovely music. Nocturnes (L. 91), sometimes Trois Nocturnes or Three Nocturnes, is an orchestral composition in three movements by the French composer Claude Debussy. It was completed on 15 December 1899.
Lin A yes, there is a certain part in the middle where it sounds like the waves are more active and the mermaids can be seen. I feel the same way. I have learned to sing it since it is easy with no lyrics. When I do it's almost entrancing, putting me into a higher vibration or something. I just become overcome with awe. Funny thing is I am a bass so I end up using falsetto or switching octaves frequently. haha
