Action mode, all day, every day.
Yep, it's too smooth.
👍🏼 exactly
PC, all day, every day.
@@MaxIronsThird Yeah, if you're married to the idea of gaming on your computer. Pretty soon they'll have systems that compete with PC's in terms of power, will cost a fraction, and be much more compact. PC's have perks but so do consoles.
@@DoubleH92 You're not wrong, but i might go Xbox only this gen, it's way more powerful than my PC, but i still would be able to run Nioh 2 better than the PS4Pro.
the loading times in this game are insanely short..which is a pretty good thing.

Ni-oh 2 has HDR, which he didn't cover, on a high end 4k tv, the HDR is spot on and even let's you adjust saturation levels, nits and how bright you want the HDR to be.
Oh thank you for the info, even more of a reason for me to save this one for the PS5, not necessarily for performance reasons, but because I don't have an HDR screen yet that I would like get by the time PS5 it out.
I'm playing in 4k hdr and I agree the hdr implementation is good, but that checkered crap makes the actual game assets look dated.
that's great I found games that allow to tweak hdr can look drastically better, unlike games where you only have brightness options some game in hdr looks way worse too bright or too dark
Helvete Ulver yup i am playing it on a high end sony tv on the pro and it looks pretty nice.
@Salt Maker lol nice try, Salty m'boy. I was saying, for those that don't have HDR that checkered aliasing is really old compared to other tech.
EVERY game needs this option.
Anyway, it's cool that the developers actually gave the players the choice to prioritize either performance or visuals. It would be good if that became the norm on console games.
It kinda already is if you have PS4 Pro/Xbox One X
What if the PS5/XSeriesX Next gen goes 60fps @ minimum ?
@@Zeegoku1007 won't be the case. two years after next gen comes out, expect most games to run at the cinematic 30 fps
@@Zeegoku1007 Not with ray tracing, I assume almost every game that will utilize ray tracing will be 30fps on next gen consoles. That being said, since devs will most likely still have to do a classic rasterized lighting model due to PC or older consoles not having RT, there might be an option to just disable RT for 60 fps.
@@Nikelangelo Shooter and racing games with RT at 30 Fps I don't think so.
I'll take action mode on pretty much every game but especially something like Nioh. Timing is everything
This game is brutal. It's currently kicking my butt. Thanks for the comparisons.
Harder than sekiro?
@@sishirshrestha1783 Different style, as Sekiro focuses more on Parry with not many weapon choices, Nioh gives you a ton of options and it depends on your reactions and playstyle more. In short, I feel it can be initially but it's down to each individual person's style.
@@sishirshrestha1783 Sekiro is another kinda game, not like souls. More like Action Adventure BDSM
@@wolker213 lol it's a clone of Dark Souls, FromSoft have as much originality in their games as COD

There is a motion blur toggle in Basic Game Settings. I turned it off for now, but it looks pretty cool. Surprised you missed it Alex, at least I think you didn't mention it...
John definitely wouldn't have missed it.. Haha
Alex was specifically looking for: Per-Object Motion Blur
@@Aggrofool It does that, too.
Jen Soon Ng it IS per object motion blur.
I am glad that Alex is getting better with the consoles technical coverage
4K Checkerboard may look bad but I play for a 1080p Screen so I'll not notice all when the picture is down simpled.
@olode adedotun Well Pro isn't the Worst mistake since Sony's First Party games looks good on it. But Sony should've at least put 5TF in the pro so games would hit 4K Native sometimes.
60 fps on base ps4, well that's cool! I hope it looks cool when playing.
SIDDHARTH GUPTA With frame drops! Performance wise I am noT so happy with my base PS4 nowadays. Glad PS5 is around the corner!
To get 60 it will need to run at 1080p
@@NORKIE you mean 720p
No matter the looks, there is something to play and look forward to instead of waiting for on the other platform imo!!!
Crescent Moon Seriously, massive lag moments, frame drops, game freezes, noises of the PS4, ... it really makes some experiences unpleasant. It annoys me when a game doesn’t run as smooth/stable as it should be. It affects the gameplay ! Control, Fallen Order, ... I hope TLOU2 will be ok, if not, I will wait to play it.
What if on pro, you front load the option to 1080p and then turn on variable mode in the game.
Steven Brañas no you have to turn super sampling or else it will put out 1080p across all modes
Can you guys cover State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition? Owners of State of Decay 2 recently received a free upgrade to this edition and the graphics has been overhauled, game is now smoother and better looking from my experience.
Feel like the Movie mode variable mode is basically future proofing for nextgen
I'm playing this now on my base PS4, and the resolution drops are very noticeable sometimes, but it's totally worth it to maintain that lovely 60fps. It's a shame that the same can't be said for the map and shrine menus, which I think cut the frames to 30fps.
Anyway, game is great
Nioh 1 was game of the year back when it was released, and honestly Nioh 2 is again another contender for sure. Been sticking in some hours and really enjoying the gameplay. Its a very deep game, and very punishing lol.
@bigevilworldwide1 GOTY
Great work as always, and here's to more developers offering performance options on consoles.
Options, options, options. This is what was missing on this generation of consoles. The player should have control over the experience he or she is gonna have. Too few games have modes you can choose from. I hope this will be the standard next generation, otherwise I won't buy the PS5 and not even for all the great exclusives. Once I tasted the freedom PC Gaming provides you in how you can customize your experience, I don't really wanna go back.
The shrine frame drops seem to be about right with how the menus perform in general. There's a VERY WEIRD amount of frame rate issues when dealing with the hub map, and so on, which I don't recall being a problem in the first game.
Hey, Digital Foundry, what's the difference between playing Nioh 1 on PS5 4k 60 fps and playing Nioh 1 Remastered on PS5 4k 60 fps? I don't see any single video on RUclips talking about that. Can you do one for us? Thanks.
I wonder how this is gonna run now on PS5?
An Unlocked filmic mode locked at 60 FPS maybe?
@DF (Alex/John)
I'm kinda surprised you guys didn't do a video about the Yakuza 0 Game.
First Yakuza Game on XBoX (also waiting for Kiwami 1&2)
Xbox is wack!
Its going to be lackluster on xbox s. And a better framerate if not on par with pro. Either way the differences will be minor.
Cause almost nobody plays japanese games on xbox
Crescent Moon, Xbox s and ps4 are the same
@@doomguy8215 not really
Unfortunately we have to wait until November for Nioh 2 on PC
Does the level of detail justify these resolutions and frame rate drops? It doesn't look that detailed of a game, but it could be RUclips compression
Played the game for 5 hours so far and can’t see anything of the details problems with the resolution but the enemies in front of me whenever I’m playing
BTW Alex, the game has, at least from what I remember in the betas, a motion blur option that is turned off by default, did you miss it or did they remove it by any chance?
It is still a option on the game
The makers of nioh released 2 samurai games b4 ghost of tsushima. Talk about work ethic 🔥🔥🔥🔥
On a Full HD display with movie mode selected, is it still running at a checkerboard'd 4K, 1920x2160? Or does it behave similar to Nioh 1? It was my understanding that, in Nioh 1, on a Full HD display, on a PS4 Pro or PC with movie mode selected, the image quality looked better than it would on a 4K display with the 4K checkerboard with movie mode selected.
my favourite RUclips channel
Movie Mode (Variable) on the PS5 will obviously be the best, for anyone who doesn’t mind waiting. Action Mode on the PS4/Pro until then. It’s the exact same story for the original Nioh.
Yesss you answered my prayers!!! ❤️👍🦁🙏
did you guys switch the movie move image with the action mode image on those PS4 pro comparisons? because... like... the movie mode literally looks worse and way more aliased than the action mode
I beat the first on the PS4 pro but I will wait for the PC version to play this prequel.
I was thinking about buying this game, but i have vanilla PS4, so im gonna wait for glorious pc version in November (hopefully).
There IS a per object motion blur option. It’s in the games settings on the last page. So... maybe address that?
Very nice to find a few 60 fps action RPGs for my regular old PS4 slim like Dark Souls 2 and these Nioh games. I can game at 30 fps no problem, but the 60 fps looks pretty smooth and is nice to have sometimes!
Nioh 2 could do almost always 60 fps while dark souls 3 you only get 60 fps when you're opening a door
This game is all about timing and gameplay mechanics therefore I m playing action mode on pro and having a blast
If you are playing Nioh for graphics and resolution then you are doing it wrong......this is an action game first and foremost and framerate and performance are the things that needs to be measured here.
Short note game's that are 60fps on console tended to be blurry and less environment details eg skekiro, cod mw,any game's with 60 FPS😁
Edit: I found out while playing skekiro I noticed it was blurry and then I played star war LJO I played that in the high FPS mode and the game became blurry like skekiro
Are u using a base console
I do the one that has the best frame rate. Yet the first entire region has problem with awful frame rate. I even went back tonight to redo a missions, and the frame rate was so bad. My character wasn't even doing what I was saying for over 3 seconds, and would walk off a cliff or into water and die. They seriously need to fix this, even the Twilight mission in that awful has awful frame rate until you get out of the first area of the mission.
having options is always good in gaming
It looks like you're showing scenes from Nioh 1 by mistake
the graphic mode is for taking screenshot ? is it that hard to understand ? Idk why people keep acting like they're the smart one for choosing Action Mode (obviously)
Btw i played the entire God of War on it's Resolution Mode on the day of it's release so there's preferences also, you know.
I wish every developer provide this option for PS4 players, so we can play 60fps too with less resolution. Team Ninja Truly underrated 🔥💯
How do you know if a framerate drop is due to CPU or GPU limitation on consoles?
It's guesses, but I think they can tell based on when the drop occurs. If it happens when a bunch of effects and particles appear onscreen, it's probably GPU-based. If it manifests in a short blip when moving from one area to another, it's likely CPU-related.
On my PS5 the movie mode with variable framerate is by far the best. Constant 60FPS with the 4k checkerboard resolution.
Will the variable mode be 4k 60fps when ps5 comes out?
We still don't know how the hardware backwards compatibility on PS5 will work.
This is reminding me of Dark Souls 2 on the 360.
Action Mode all the way, such a great game moving to #2. No idea why the dabbling with checkerboard rendering, would be cool if they improve it but the gameplay that shines, not that it looks but though
Yeah, I'll be waiting for the PC version. Nioh was pretty rough on my base PS4, and it looked quite a bit better on my PC. Nioh 2 will be the exact same thing.
Since I haven't damaged eyes since most people here, I've beaten this and Nioh 1 on 30fps.
Absolutely no problems whatsoever.
Hey Alex, in the end, what's the best overall mode you recommend for PS4 (base model) ?
Looks like the sphere grid from FFX is catching on 😁
Digital foundry cant get past the 1st level, I was looking for a more diverse comparison
I need this game in my collection... too bad I also need to finish the first game and it's DLC as well before stepping into this experience.
Alex! Why do developers so frequently turn of AF on console games, when it has so little of a performance cost and so great of a visual loss??? I've wondered this forever.
The performance cost is little only if you have the memory bandwidth to spare. And that's especially important on consoles because the system memory and VRAM are one shared pool. Meaning GPU related settings like texture resolution, AF, AA etc. could bottleneck the CPU if too much bandwidth is used.
Guys does 1080 in 4k TV look better than 1080 in 1080 TV????
No
How does it look on the xbox one x though?
I will wait for complete edition.
So we are hitting the limits of those Jaguars now at least in third party games. I felt the same thing with my fx 8320, now my ryzen 5 3600 is pushing my GPU lol.
Just give us 1080p 60fps with some AA and 16x AF or 1440p 30fps. No checkerboarding needed.
You know I was worried the game would look meh on the pro on action mode but it looks pretty good with hdr on. I know itll look better on pc or ps5 when it comes out for those two but it is an upgrade from nioh 1 (never played nioh 1 mind you but watched a friend play it).
Alex, i hope you have time to do lots of GPU benchmarks for Doom Eternal on PC :D
Has anyone tried Mclassic + ps4pro + 1440p w/ action mode? Maybe we can play at 1440p and 60fps via Mclassic? Let me know guys.
What engine are they using?
Multiple modes are cool, but I'll be waiting for the best mode, the PC mode.
If you're playing in action mode though on a console, I'm sure you're still having fun, as did I back in Nioh 1.
Hope it comes to PC. Had a lot of fun with first part.
Its 100 % guaranteed to come to pc, sooner the better no mode on ps4 would make me happy.
From what we can see in the video, it runs like shit on ps4, so it will obviously be coming to PC as a definitive version. Koei tecmo just trying to double dip
You should learn what CB rendering is
I really can't wait for this to be released on PC
Cool video
What's the name of the track @ the beginning?
It's from Nioh 1, the London Castle stage song.,
Looks cool, and I'll be interested once it hits PC or Series X. Thumbs up for referencing the often forgotten Demon's Souls.
Which 1 is easy mode??
Going to have to disagree with Alex here. If the developers cannot guarantee a consistent level of performance across all presentation modes, then those problematic modes are inherently defective and should be removed. This would remove choice but would make for an objectively better game. Consistent level of performance at the highest level of presentation quality should be the priority.
love this game so much
Love the first game and enjoyed the 2nd but am gutted not much improved in the game engine
This is a game that benefits greatly on PC and would be cool to see on Xbox X.
This kind of game looks better if it had a PC port or waiting till the PS5 is out before playing it because even thought the action mode is the best of the bunch for now, it's cutting back in many areas whereas the movie mode with unlocked frame rate should work great on the PS5.
Playing Nioh 2 with 30fps is like upping the difficulty of the game.
Yeah this time I’m going to wait for the PC version.
kasakka I don't know man, this sounds like a PS exclusive to me
@@hjalmiris4230 its not, it will be on the PC within a year.
The PC version of the first game was a bit of a mess IIRC tho.
Will this be on PS5? Probably not but feel free to pay for a “remaster”
This game looks stunning, can't wait to play it!
Played the original..
I thought it was pretty good..
Though I'm not interested in the second currently..
@Noc fox

@@mauryj.3415
Still have a right to say so..
this is the only game objectively on the same level of quality as dark souls in combat and presentation
I love pixel count analysis
Motion blur should be eliminated completely, it's sickening... especially in the first cut scene when it pans down from the cherry blossom trees.
I got this game free with my Pro and still haven't played it yet.
I want the higher FPS. But I just want everything to good enough to not notice how bad it looks to everything else.
What about multiplayer?
So essentially the same as the first Nioh. And i will do the same and double-dip, once the PC version is out. When we have some powerfull HDMI2.1 cards I will enjoy it again in 4K 120fps wiyh VRR :-). I enjoyed the first Nioh better than any Dark Souls, but I would put Bloodbourne on the top, if we would get a staple 60fps, hoping for a good PS5 port here.
I hope this comes to PC, I really enjoyed the first.
will sometime for sure... but i woudnt wait years as ps4 is so cheap to get anywhere
After a quick Google search it seems PC release is set for November.
@@sean8102 You're referring to the gamespot article yes? That was the only source I ever found on it. If there's some other source that confirmed, please do share!
720P ... aaaaah shit here we go again....
im sure it will be a while but im waiting for it to be on the PC
Kudos to anyone who can play this game.
The game is not truly out until it hits PC though, right Alex?
I'm afraid to purchase this game. It took me a while to beat the first one.
It’s ridiculously fun and is much better than the first. However, it is harder in many ways. You’re more powerful but there are more Yokai and each can feel like a mini-boss until you learn their timing.
I play my games on 1080p because it keeps the frame rate stable. I don't really get why 4K is imperials considering it's only 10% sharper than 1080p.
Where's Tom? It's usually him who reviewing PS4 releases, not Alex.
Variable mode is for future proofing. Should run perfectly on PS5, however... the shitty image quality needs to be patched when PS5 hits.
The main reason Nioh is a better franchise than all the Souls games is the 60 FPS on console!
