I just got one of these little radios. I really like it! Especially with good quality headphones or buds. I don't like listening to weak signal shortwave broadcast and ham stations through the radio's speaker though. Intelligibility is not the best for my old ears with that speaker. The radio is much smaller in person. Really impressive receiver for the size and the price. I think this Eton may be a better receiver than my old Radio Shack DX-398 and it's less than 1/2 the size and price of that radio when it was new. The worst aspect is chuffing when tuning, but I can live with that considering it's a tiny portable with great audio and impressive sensitivity. My DX-398 chuffs too, but it's not as pronounced.
Does this radio have the hiss in the headphones like the Eton Executive/Elite Traveler? Is AM reception better? It`s only 100 bucks on Amazon and that`s a steal for a radio with that many features and SSB. Originally I intended to spend 100 bucks or less for a radio so I bought the Tecsun PL 310et, AC adapter and rechargeable batteries with a charger for 80 bucks. AM didn`t work through the speaker (only headphones but reception is very good) and I wasn`t able to return it so I bought the Elite Traveler. I`m glad I have those radios but would have preferred this one. I`m gonna get one eventually. I haven`t heard of anyone complaining about these Eton radios failing but I have heard that many of the Tecsuns fail after 2 or 3 years. My Grundig made by Eton is still going strong after five years of heavy use.
The hiss is minimal on mine, though you will get mild popping when changing bands and seeking: ruclips.net/video/YXrTKxo7wtA/видео.html . The Traveler is horrible on headphones. I use mine to record radio shows every evening. They come out nice using the headphone jack.
I've been listening to mine with expensive Beats headphones and Klipsch ear buds. I can't detect any receiver hiss at all. If it's there, it's well below the noise level on all bands and modes. My problem is all the RF noise at my QTH on shortwave and longwave. I've had mine for a couple days now and I'm really impressed with the audio quality with headphones. In my opinion the radio speaker isn't very good for copying weak signals though.
