    When David announced his changes I know there were naysayers, but I thinks his work stands on it's own even with the format changes. I'm sure the same will hold true for you. You have the story telling knack, that more than anything is the reason people watch, whether they realize it or not. Jo does a superb job with the editing, Michael does a superb job with the bloopers (sorry, couldn't resist), and George is just superb. Find your way to tell your stories so that you can enjoy doing it, the rest will follow. And anytime Michael wants to take us on a tour of a historic site or museum I'm all in.
    Good luck! I hope the college situation sorts itself, but no matter, keep being who you want to be.

      The storytelling knack is certainly the biggest draw for me. There was a time when webcomics were my primary entertainment, and all I needed from them was an engaging story and just enough art skill that I could see what was going on.

    Thank you Michael and Jo for all the hours of boating video pleasure you have given me and my daughter Rosie. We waved and shouted your names near March and Cambridge. We have since spent a whole week cruising the Cam and Great Ouse. This has really brought Rosie out of her depression and she wants to do it all again. So, thank you. You are the tops. We love you.

      I started watching in Feb 2021 (I started with #246--the Mersey crossing [long story on how I found it]), so I caught up to what had been posted by early March. As such, I went back to the beginning and started at 001 to see how the journey started... it took me until May 2022 to get through the first 245, then I got sidetracked with life, work, and other things, but I'm just now catching up based the posting about the "penultimate" video...
      It's been quite interesting to binge watching (and I've mentioned this before, I actually use Google Maps to follow along--I know it's weird). I'm going to be sad to catch up to the last episode... The renovation videos will be interesting (I'm interested to see if Michael figures out how to do an American RV-style bump-out to get that instant double-wide...).

    You've done a fantastic job of highlighting the lesser known parts of the canal network, it's harder to argue for resources to reopen canals when existing ones are hardly known/used. It was great to see you go up the Ripon canal, and crossing the Wash was incredible. I'd seen a beautiful video by Martyn Whitwell of narrowboats crossing the Wash before and it was amazing. So fantastic you did so and gave David and Lorna Jane a chance to go with you. It was unforgettable JUST as a viewer. If you do move up to Scotland the network here only consists of the Union and Forth and Clyde canals, but there are plenty of nice places along them - so that's fifty to sixty plus miles of canal to park up along. It would be great to have you here! Best of luck with the West Highland Way Jo, it's a tremendously varied route you'll love it. I'd love to see you turn your map design talents to one showing all the canals currently being restored and proposed new waterways such as Milton Keynes to Bedford. I worry that some of the canal restoration trusts will peter out, one in Yorkshire did close down recently, very sad. The fact that with enough restoration it will be possible to go by boat from Kendal in the Lake District to the South coast of England is amazing and exciting. So many towns like Grantham, Hereford and Derby potentially becoming 're-attached' to the canal network. Then there's the linked Cotswolds canal and the Wilts and Berks canal which when fully re-opened will add more than a total of 100 miles to the network. It would be great to highlight this work and I'd certainly buy the relevant map! Anyway thanks for all you've done, best luck for the future!

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 года назад

      Thank you for that! We do hope for Scotland, but there's a lot of things that would need to line up to make that happen, not least of which is a residential mooring space! Knock wood though! I'll mention the idea of a "possible future restoration" map to Jo ... that's a hard one, as a LOT of efforts are underway but really in extremely variable stages of restoration. Not even sure where we'd find a comprehensive list to start from! M

    • @leswallace2426
      @leswallace2426 3 года назад

      @@MinimalList Yes I see your point you're absolutely right about how would you categorise restoration projects - some seem to be far further along than others, and I get a feeling some are just hanging on by their fingernails. And how much of a market would there be for a map of possible canal restorations. I'd absolutely love one, but that's just me.

    I changed direction 180 degrees at the age of 49 and got a masters, and then a second masters, and then a PhD. If you had asked me my plan when I was 48, if grad school was in my future, I would have laughed hysterically. It was the best decision I ever made (after my choice of spouse).Grad school was so much fun as "a grown-up". I loved almost every minute (even when I was sleep deprived). If I can do it, anyone can do it. I am looking forward to hearing all about your experience. I hope you love it as much as I did. (and, yes, as a returning student with kids in college and a few unexpected medical challenges, it was not all smooth sailing, If I had to do it all over again, I would jump at the choice, I'll be cheering you on ( and anxiously waiting for updates on Jo and George too!)

    We have watched and enjoyed your videos from the beginning. I don't know exactly where your interests lie, Michael, but i got started programming in 1966, just in time for the IBM/360. I was an Assembly Language programmer and also used COBOL, FORTRAN, BASIC, RPG, LOGO, etc. I came in at just the right time and it provided a career path for me. Just thought you might be interested. Best of luck in your future endeavors and we will be watching.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 года назад +1

      Ahh, some great languages there, though Fortran is the only one still going strong. COBOL saw quite the resurgence in demand in the early Covid nightmare, which was fascinating! My area of interest is understanding the dynamics of programming language and feature adoption ... extremely strange little niche! Thank you so much for the support! M

    Recon you should renovate the boat, keep it as a holiday boat because there are a lot of memories on the boat that you might miss, and then go and see some other parts of the would, maybe get a camper and do some of the van life which you’ll be amazing at and keep the boat just for chilling on. PS another very informative catch up vlog as well.Looking forward to you next 20 videos ,Hope you have some sort of a party when you finally complete the final leg of the cruise!

      It's an option, though being minimalist be nature we're more sentimental about our memories than the things we did them in ... plus the idea of Persey sitting somewhere, just waiting, is kind of heartbreaking. She's an adventurous boat, and wants to move! Thanks so much for watching and hope you enjoy the cruising videos that remain! M

    The best of luck to the two of you and George of course. What ever you choose, I for one will still follow your adventures if you put them up. Incidentally my wife and I and my cousin and her husband have just had the holiday from hell that we thoroughly enjoyed on the Llangollen canal. Before we even left the mooring we were rammed by another boat, my wife fell from the well deck into the boat, luckily all she sustained was some very sore bruising, and then, late on day two the black water tank became full because the company hadn't pumped it out, luckily there were two toilet/shower rooms with a black water tank each on board. we managed to get to a marina and a pump out. That night I noticed that the lights were dimming when ever water was drawn or the toilets flushed, the next morning nothing worked, no microwave, toaster, toilets water pumps, etc. I suspected that the alternator had packed up and when I checked the domestic battery gauge it read 8V even with the engine running, so it was another trip to a marina where we spent quite a pleasant day eating and drinking in the marina café while a very able engineer replaced the domestic alternator. The people and staff at the marina were wonderful and we left there around 5:00pm feeling we had made some friends. From that point on the holiday went well and I don't think we have laughed so much in years. As I said in the beginning, a holiday from hell that we thoroughly enjoyed.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 года назад

      Hah, well that really does sound like a baptism of fire holiday! Glad you all survived it with a lot of laughter and only a few bruises (do hope she's healed!)! Cheers, and thank you for watching! M

    All this time, I have been commenting and teasing and poking you both. It was never ever meant to waste your time but to engage. I appreciate that you have taken the time to respond to my lunacy, even when you took me seriously (and I was only half serious). This new chapter sounds exciting! And now i know who to send 50 years of beads and tools to when I go, Jo!
    Whether you focus your videos on cruising or fixing or painting or canine orb engagement, it matters not (to me). You are both natural story tellers, you have kept me sane after however many years sitting at husbands bedside and in I have come to know and love you guys as you have painted your story on RUclips. There are lots (and lots and lots) of cruising videos so if that's what I wanted, I am spoiled for choice. (There is a new dog in the neighborhood named George, or you are projecting Michael, but hearing a man calling George! GEORGE! while I am typing is a bit surreal) as the video ended when I started to type.
    ANYWAY, whomever, however and whatever you choose to film, edit and upload is fine with me. If Michael ever gets the opportunity to visit that one museum he has repeatedly tried to catch open, i hope you film what you can and Michael gives us his take on the experience, that would be grand. I don't know where it is, relative to where you are, or if that even remains on the wishlist but if it happens? Please share. Outside of that? I like to hear from friends and it would never occur to me to determine what they talk about. I feel the same way about you and feel honored, frankly, that you will continue to keep in touch. I simply enjoy you both.
    Thanks for the update. I had noticed that you uploaded less than was usual but you kept us aware enough of your frequent needs for accessible train stations and exploring your schooling wishes and plans that I suspected half of what you said. Thank you for bringing us with you on your travels and it is my hope that you continue to allow us to tag along. I won't complain that i am bored and i will try to behave. Good luck, both of you, with what you are working on! I am confident that you both will succeed past your expectations because you are both awesome! What is the walk you are taking, Jo? Will George come with? I hope so, now!

    Nice to see you both in realish time. I didn't realize your journey was so close to completion, that's fantastic! As with all journeys, when one chapter closes, the next will begin.
    I understand your comment interaction dilemma. It happens to many channels as they grow or experience changes in the day to day grind. Seems like some busy channels I watch respond to comments for an hour or 2 after a video goes live and that's it. Another channel I watch responds for a while but continues to heart comments for quite a while.
    Anyway, see you in the next one👍😉👍

Will definitely have to reduce the responses in the future as it can get really overwhelming, especially with the volume of comments still coming on on older videos! M

    Hi, my partner Denise & I have watched all your videos over the past four years. All the time we were looking for our boat, your videos and others helped us get familiar with the vagaries of CCing and boat life in general. We bought our boat and have been cruising as live aboards ever since, we even started our own vlog called Narrowboat Living and put out 16 episodes until my eyesight failed which means I can’t see to operate the cameras. This leaves Denise having to do everything including steering the boat and most of the locking and you obviously know that the editing builds up to impossible levels, however I do get to handle the boat in the locks, so it’s not all bad. We have often commented on how you are able to carry on doing this and covering so much water and in doing so you can’t stick around long enough to be able to appreciate the areas you visit. Whatever you do, enjoy, we will carry on watching until there is no more to watch, keep it up as long as you can, thanks for all the vids!

    Enjoying the VLOGS as always, what a legacy you are leaving behind having covered and documented your journey around network. As you consider your options for the next phase coming up for you next year, whatever you are able to do on line will be just perfect, and life is all about change. I'm heading back from the US to visit family in the UK in the next few days,. I will spend most time around my home town Epsom, but will include a visit to my Cousin in Northampton and I've booked an overnight stay in a pub in Crick and I'm arranging a visit to Whilton Marina for an exploratory look over some boats, as a temptation and investigation for what maybe a new change for me sometime over the next few years. The UK is calling me back I feel, and part of that has been your VLOGs, stirring up that whatever it is inside that gets stirred up.
