      Russia is on the edge of hyperinflation. Before the war, 1.4¢ per ruble. In the days after the war started in 2022, the ruble jumped down to 0.74¢, then a few months later up to 1.9¢. Then it settled down, over a year, to 1.2¢ over a year. Relatively stable until the end of August this year, last week at 0.96¢, now down to 0.93¢ and falling fairly quickly. Citizens are already running to the store with their paychecks, to spend them before they lose more value. Soon: wheelbarrows full of money.

      Absolutely correct. We all know not to surround ourselves with weak "yes" men, because we all need genuine feedback and advice. Putin has committed this cardinal sin and is now paying for it - the wrong people have given him the wrong information and advised him wrongly - and it will cost him his job and probably his life.
      Democracies move slowly because we don't surround ourselves with "yes" men, but that consensus approach gives better policies and more stable economies, hence the democratic west has 100 times Russia's military power.
      I can't understand why Putin thinks he can win, unless he's simply relying on his military bluffs working. Let's make sure his bluffs don't work, and then he'll be finished.

      The ruble is actually weaker than the figures suggest due to russian bank interventions.

    Raising interest rates at his point will be nothing but a pro-forma move which will have virtually no beneficial effect on the ruble. As of yesterday, Putin said that Russia will de-list their currency (which apparently means that they won’t have to report financial stats to the IMF.) I’m no economist but the ruble should drop like a rock. Meanwhile, Ukraine is closing the gas pipeline feeding Austria as of Jan 1, so there goes that income.
    In short, anyone buying or investing in rubles now is just looking to lose money hand over fist.

      Agreed - except the last part which I think is overly pessimistic. It's possible, but I think, and hope, very unlikely. If Putin precipitates a nuclear conflict he'll either be killed in the conflict like thousands of others, or he'll be killed when he emerges from his bunker; no one can tolerate a sociopath who brings the world to destruction. So, either way he loses and loses big - so I don't think he'll do it.

    • @Proper-Kernow
      @Proper-Kernow 12 часов назад

      There are numerous reasons why putin wont use nukes. A red line has been crossed literally every month of this conflict.
      The russian nuclear doctrine limits nuclear to acts that compromises the russian power structure.
      India and china have explicitly told putin he cannot use nukes, the will isolate from russia.
      Nuking a neighbour would be suicide as the fall out blows back over your country.
      Nuking another nuclear power will result in assured mutual destruction.
      Their last icbm test launch failed as it blew up in the launch mount. they would likely have to launch smaller nukes from a sub which are easy to shoot down.

There are not runs on the Russian banks; people are not queueing up in the streets of Moscow and St Petersburg. Russians are undoubtedly suffering the effects of inflation (more so than the rest of the world), but Putin has done such a good job of preventing the populace from assembling or protesting that there does not seem any realistic chance of any serious instability.

I still have investments in the UK and need the country to survive and not get into a war it can't win. Britain is run by idiots and this channel doesn't help. The IMF is forecasting that the Russian will grow at 3.6% in 2024. It is one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies outside of India and China,.That is not a country collapsing. The World Bank's International Comparison Program (ICP), confirmed in June that Russia had overtaken Germany and Japan to become the wor;d's fourth-largest economy using the PPP method of GDP calculation. The exchange rate is almost irrelevant, it reflects low oil prices. Russia is able to sell the oil it produces.
