Very low paying wages in RTP unless your in the Pharmaceutical or Medical industries. The housing market increased from $250k for a 3bedroom in cary apex to $450 k literally over night and the low wages stayed the same. My friends rental apartment went from $ 1150 a month to $1500 a month in one year. They can charge anything they want and there are no laws protecting renters. What they think is luxury down here in rentals is what low income housing is in NJ. Linoleum floors that are suppose to look like wood, formica counter that are suppose to look like marble and the cheapest of cheap lighting fixture and appliances that constantly break down For $1500 a month for a one bedroom and over $1700 for a two bedroom you would expect a lot more and get much more in the north east. There is also on the news frequently alot of
embezzlement going on here because there are so many poor people here It is different from north east because NC does not have a large middle class so you'll have to get use to the distinct culture of the HAVES and HAVE NOTS.

Thank you for this video, Chris and Tanner! My husband and I moved from PA to the coast of NC last year. For some reason we can take the humidity here so much better than we could in PA. My husband's allergies have totally improved; mine are worse. Lol. After living near a big city all our lives, the peace in NC is refreshing. And the very dark nights allow for quite the star show! Great video and happy to see we have no regrets.

After traveling here extensively for work last year, I moved here from Florida about 4 months ago.
My general observations about the area -
    1. Humidity, bugs etc. are not an issue at all when moving from Florida. Quite the opposite actually, the weather is great. Winters can be bit dull but very manageable.
    2. Food is generally above average to great in most restaurants that I have tried. Good wine bars and tapas restaurants in the area.
    3. The entire RTP area is predominantly white. While that does not mean that people are unkind or racist, as a person of color I feel out of place in most establishments that I been to including the gym, restaurants etc. And when I have talked to other people of color, I have gotten the same feedback.
    4. Housing is segregated around Raleigh city center. For eg. inside the beltline is for white folks only. Good luck trying to get a house in that area is you are a person of color.
    5. Lack of good night life - If you are in our 30's or younger and want to enjoy night life RTP isn't for you. Downtown is a joke, almost non-existent.
    6. Live music scene / concerts sucks - most big bands give RTP area a miss while touring the country.
For all its claim about being the next big tech hub and comparisons to Austin, sadly Raleigh has a long way to go. I am packing my bags as soon as my apartment lease is up.

Lived in NC for 3 years after being born and raised in Chicago. 3 years was long enough to see why this place was awful. We lived in the Triad and were never felt welcomed. We got the constant “go back where you came from” treatment. Even at church, my kids Christian school, or at work. I made a handful of friends there, but the people as a whole were nasty to me and my family. All we wanted was a better life for our kids and ourselves. We’ve since moved to Georgia. • @GeraldM_inNC

BUGS -- There are biting bugs here that the locals call "No-see-'ems". Not only don't you see them, you don't feel them on your skin. And when they bite you, you won't see any lumps. But they are voracious, and wearing pants and long sleeves doesn't help at all. If you sit outside within the two hours before sundown they will eat you alive, and you will be scratching like a hound for days until your skin is red. Avoid being outside during those hours. I found this to be true at both ends of the state.
HUMIDITY - I always assumed humidity has something to do with proximity to a sea or ocean, and I was surprised when I discovered that inland Charlotte is disgustingly humid. (On the good side, that mitigates the cold of winter.) It was explained to me that this is water-laden air from the Gulf of Mexico that drifts northeast until hit stalls at the Appalachian Mtns. because it is too heavy to float over them. So it reaches Charlotte and just sits there! Charlotte is actually much more humid that eastern NC, which is close to the Atlantic Ocean.
ALLERGIES - When I moved to eastern NC I discovered that I'm allergic to cotton. Never had that problem in Charlotte. I start coughing and sneezing as soon as I drive past a cotton farm, and sometimes it even bothers me inside the house.
ENTERTAINMENT -- North Carolinians just aren't much into music or entertainment. Even the major cities have negligible music or theater or culture compared to any Northern city. (Indeed, there are small cities in the North that have much more entertainment than Charlotte.) You will be lucky to find half a dozen concerts all year to attend, and theaters and museums practically don't exist or are small and inactive. Eating out is their prime form of entertainment, and you probably won't hear any live music while eating.
SOCIAL LIFE -- I realize that "When in Rome do as the Romans", but I don't think the reason Northerners are systematically shunned is because the Northerners don't try to fit in. North Carolinians are very family-oriented, and if you aren't related to them you don't exist. The locals have plenty of social life within themselves because they're literally all related! Out east of Raleigh those same families have been living there since the 18th Century in those small and middle sized towns, and pretty much everyone in the town is a cousin. I'm not exaggerating, this is so well known locally that they joke about it amongst themselves. That's why the locals are so chummy with each other -- they're all related! If you move to eastern NC from outside because you can buy a house really cheap here, be prepared to be shunned. You won't have any friends except other outsiders who moved here. Nobody will invite you over or to do things with them. Your opinion is irrelevant and anything you say is automatically stupid. My only friends in this region are other people like me who moved here recently, and they've all experienced exactly the same shunning that I have. Yeah, it's cheap to live in areas like this, but you will never be accepted. I have never lived anywhere else in my 70 years where I felt so unwelcome. In contrast, I loved my five years in Charlotte and really regret that the rising costs of housing left me no option but to leave.

Thanks for your honesty... Everything you said more or less confirms what I suspected and experienced in visits down to NC. We scratched it off our list of places to retire to last year after Apple announced that it was locating in the tech triangle and real estate sky rocketed. But prior to that, I was very concerned about the oppressive heat/humidity, allergies, bugs/critters, etc...
My wife's family insists on vacationing for a week every July at Lake Norman. Being from New England, I'm used to clean/clear lakes in summer. The pea soup, cesspool look of Lake Norman is off putting to me, but if the locals love it, more power to them.
FYI... If you're a northerner and don't mind the cold in winter, PA is a good place for retirees. VERY tax friendly to retirees, even more so than SC or NC believe it or not (my wife is studying for a CFP program and the software she uses easily calculates that). With the prices of homes on the rise in parts of NC, home prices in the suburbs of some smaller PA cities are very comparable. Property tax is more than NC, but the tax benefit on investment income and SS in PA more than makes up for it, at least it you're going to be withdrawing six figures every year.
Anyway... Thanks again for your honesty and good info. Provides me with some good ammo for the in-laws when they continue to needle us about retiring to the Carolina's!

Great video, but I need to share some knew knowledge when it comes to the comments about humidity. It’s NOT the humidity that’s miserable, it’s the ‘Dew Point’ (that’s the sticky miserable feeling). I geeked out with science one evening trying to understand why a location in one state that has same humidity level is comfortable vs another state that has the same humidity % BUT makes you sweat in areas you didn’t realize you have sweat glands in 😆🤷‍♀️. I was utterly stunned when I saw that NC dew point was higher than Kauai, HI in spring/summer… that’s some serious Sweltering sticky sweaty happening!

Thanks for the video! I grew up in California but have lived in SW Florida for 12 years and so have come accustomed to (albeit begrudgingly) to extreme humidity and heat, thunderstorms, hurricanes, very strange insects, snakes, alligators and endless strip malls, over development of commercial areas, very little green areas, completely flat, no seasons at all and an over abundance of people 65+ (no offense but I’m not there yet). NC seems like a dream to my family and me! We have visited NC several times in the summer and didn’t find the humidity to be as bad as Florida. I think NC has a lot to offer geographically speaking, and like anywhere, how one responds to an area and it’s people is completely circumstantial and how you make it. Admittedly I didn’t have a great attitude when I first moved to Florida, being a snobby Californian and all- but that has since dissipated and now you couldn’t pay me enough to move back to that state! The hardest part about a interstate move is knowing where to move when you only stay to visit for a brief time. We love Ballantyne in South Charlotte but are trying to find other options too, any recommendations around Raleigh for neighborhoods similar to Ballantyne (assuming you’re familiar with Ballantyne)? Thanks!

So look forward to buying alot of things online. The only jobs are in the medical or pharmaceutical industries that pay well and very few in software. So if you move here it will be marginal that your spose will get a decent job unless their in those industries. And you can look forward to paying over $420,000 for a house that was going for $225,000 less than a year ago because all the hedge funds bought up the majority of the housing expecting you to come running down here because Apple is building a campus. The only problem is Apple only rented three floors in the MetLife bldg and all those hedgefunds are still waiting for you and the Apple campus to be built.

Everything is far depending if you live in a white community or not, nothing is bikeable, extremely car dependent, and food deserts in Hispanic and black communities, not much to do... If you want to the fun things to do are a few hours away (2 hours to beach 3 or 4 to mountains) which is pretty far considering I used to live in CO and things were 30-1hr away. That last line has me confused. "Be prepared to pay over asking price and unfortunately pay the difference if it appraised for more than you paid for it?". Why would you have to pay the appraised price if you already paid for the house? Great video, thanks for sharing

    • @LivinginRaleighTV
      @LivinginRaleighTV  Год назад +3

If you're getting a mortgage, the mortgage company will order an appraisal to make sure the home is worth what you are paying for it. The mortgage will only finance for the amount it appraises for, so if you go under contract to buy a house for 500K and it only appraises for 490K, you would have to pay the 10K upfront since the mortgage won't cover it. The good news is the market has cooled off a lot since we made this video, so there are plenty of options to buy a house at asking price or below, which is less risky for appraisals.

I moved to the Outer Banks 30 years ago from the Washington DC suburbs. Since then if there's something to see, I've seen it. If there is something to do, I've done it. If there's good seafood, I've eaten it, if there's something to know, I know it. In the summer a quarter of a million tourists drive in and a quarter of a million leave. Know all the back ways, if there are any to know or sit in a very slow moving herd of cars. Know when to go to the grocery store and when not to. The Wright Memorial Bridge is the only way to get on the Outer Banks from the North. It can back up 20 miles. No, I'm not kidding. We have alligators, snakes, sharks, and a gazillion bugs. Always keep awareness of what's around you. I would love to move to the more mountainess area. So why do I hesitate? Because here I live in a safe bubble; there is very little crime. If you want to tall humidity, move to Houston. What I don’t like about the Raleigh-Durham area is that Uber/Lyft drivers get paid SO much less here per mile, even though passengers pay more. Plus, you have to constantly ask passengers here to wear masks, which means they don’t care about others as much as they pretend to. I said what I said.

I don't recall seeing more than 10 or so in the 20-years I was there, so it's not like they are everywhere all the time. The noise in the nearby suburb I live in is horrific - there is a culture of 'leaf blowing' going on 9-5 which is legal 9AM to 6PM seven days a week. The development roars with 95 decibel soundwaves ALL DAY EVERY DAY. Weekends and Thanksgiving included. Backpack blowers, gas blowers, hired crews, edging, landscape mowers. Cars all sitting on curbs and not in driveways. HORRIFIC TRAFFIC with two lane roads with NO SHOULDERS and not enough traffic lights. Roads are completely unable to handle the 24/7 traffic which is heavy even at 10PM. Loud exhaust trucks. Noise pollution is incredible. Passive people who just accept and are not willing to sign petitions to do something, anything about the situation.

    - NC is very wet and gray in the winter. It's depressing.

My husband loved it here. I'm not sure why, I think it might be the privacy. He likes to have a yard to mow. He loves to work and work.
Me, the jury is still out. I have read so many negative things by the locals. They don't want California people here. The thing is, why do they think we moved from there? … we didn't like it there.
I was raised in big sky country. I love seeing the sky at night and sunsets. None of that here. The woods are dark and spooky. The wind blowing trees down is a really scary thing for me. Every time it storms I wonder if the trees are going to come through the house and smash us. Also, I hate to sweat. The move to CA was wonderful in that area. Here you sweat all the time. It makes me feel grungy. So I stay in the air.
But one thing I hope you don't have here is the rats, they are in every city of CA … scary and dirty things. I mean they are in every neighborhood there good and bad. They say it is from the climate there. I have a lot of complaints about CA as well. I'm beginning to think I will never fit in CA or here.
One of my biggest complaints is not being able to find a real town. There are all the same businesses but they are scattered far and wide. I like Apex because it has a downtown. So does that town of FV ... but Cary's town is not a real town.
I woke up grumpy this morning, so venting. I just hope I start liking it here. I am lonely for that down-home friendliness on the plains. I talk to people when I go out but don't have any friends. I am used to having so many. The hurricanes come next. Aren't I an old windbag? Lol ... this doesn't bother my husband!!!

I grew up in CA and although it’s a beautiful state, the weather is usually fantastic, and no humidity, the state for me was ruined long ago by a very poorly run and corrupted state government. Then the tech titans came in and it really went south. I think most sane people realize the severe issues California has and that’s partly why so many have left. I left mostly because I was exhausted working 3 jobs to still not make ends meet and knowing I’d never be able to afford to buy a home. I don’t regret leaving 12 years ago. However I went to the wrong state. Florida has many great qualities but for me it’s a state i would rather visit; doesn’t feel like home. There’s no seasons, it’s almost always hot, completely flat and swampy, when it is nice (Jan-March) everyone and their uncle are all here too and you can’t get an inch to yourself on the beach, let alone a parking spot, a dinner reservation, it’s just overrun by northern and midwestern snowbirds and other tourists. In the summer no one wants to be here because of the stifling humidity and then half the year you’re stressed out worrying about hurricanes! Ugh I’m so anxious to get out of here. Problem is my husband dreams of living in Big Sky country. He lived in Colorado and loved it but now CO too is changing so much, and not for the better, IMO. There really is no perfect state. Everywhere has pros and cons. I hope you find what you’re looking for, I know it’s a challenging journey!

I just moved to the Jacksonville area from south FL and I hate it. The people are rude, crime is very high, everyone wants to show off their assault rifles, there are no parks or greenways, the traffic is horrendous, it’s very hot year round, very low education rates. I’m moving to NC next year so I can be in the trees and greenery.

I have been hesitant about moving to a city in NC since I grew up in NY but now live in MD (20 miles from DC). I wonder if I would get easily bored even though I am older now. I am a social butterfly and like to engage in social activities.
I am not interested moving to the overcrowded Raleigh or Charlotte. Does NC have good pizza shops (not dominos or Ledos).

    • @LivinginRaleighTV
      @LivinginRaleighTV  2 года назад +4

Coming from NY, you're going to be disappointed at most of the pizza shops. But we do have some really good ones here that are owned by former NYers and others that are just a different style but really good.

we plan on moving there in the fall next year, and I have already found homes I would love to have, yes I hate the city, I love the country crittors and plenty of space between homes, I love nc spent many of summers there as a teen and we go to the outer banks every chance we get. I want a place where there are few restirctions to having chickens or even a horse if I want one, a place where it is about 30 minutes to a town or city for groceries, and hardware stores etc. yes I know about the snakes, and the gators but where we plan on living there wont be alligators, we plan somwhere near greensboro or pilot mountain, we like it there, teh closest we are considering near the coast is wilson perhaps, we want to avoid hurricanes as much as we can at least the full brunt of them. dont want to live to close to raleigh, to much city for me. the homes we have been looking at to get a idea of what kind of houses are where, are well within our price range and enough land to make us happy, my hubby loves having bees. the humidity might be a issue but I remember when I spent the summers I used to have to get up at 5 30 to go for a run, but it was okay if I have air conditioning I am happy. and plants galore is great, i love plants, trees and the kind youcan have down there is wonderful such as magnolia, crape myrtles, broadleaf evergreens and types of roses I cant grow here because it gets to cold in the winter for them.

Glad you're already seeing homes you like. Pilot mountain area isn't as hot and it's very beautiful up that way. That's also in the heart of NC wine country. Greensboro is nice too and smaller than Raleigh. Thanks for watching!

That's interesting, I'm planning to relocate from Halifax County to Wilson County later this year. If social life means little to you, Halifax County is great because you can buy a big house and lots of land for next to nothing, even in 2022. If you just want privacy, a big house and lots of land, Halifax County is the place for you. You just won't have any friends.
I'm curious about your interest in Wilson. Mine is that it has a cute town center and that there is a church I want to become involved with. What's your interest there?

I moved to Raleigh a couple yrs ago from WVa, no regrets. I grew up visiting family in Charlotte on weekends. Chose Raleigh to move to over Charlotte. #1, Raleigh was a much better fit for me profesionally. #2, outside of downtown Charlotte, I personally didn't find much else as appealing. Raleigh was more my taste. I like a lot of arts & recreation and there's plenty here. Charlotte isn't far, so I can always go visit family on a Saturday. #3, Raleigh is very close to the Emerald coast so if you like beaches, you are within 1 1/2 hour drive of several beaches along the coast. Both are great NC cities, they just have different subcultures. Best wishes with your move ❤

I’m from Georgia and I’ve vacationed in North Carolina for many years, so I’m very familiar with the state. I like NC a little better than Georgia as a place to call home since North Carolina has more choices for types of towns and living environments. The population in NC is better distributed than it is in Georgia. In Georgia, the Atlanta metro area dominates like a juggernaut while the rest of the state is rural and poor. Atlanta’s traffic and crime has been really bad for about the past 10-15 years and it’s become a bit much for my patience. Plus, I’ve had it up to my eyeballs with the idiotic wokeness and hip-hop culture. I would recommend North Carolina as a great state to move to for pretty much anyone that’s looking to escape lunacy.

    • @LivinginRaleighTV

Here in Raleigh we see them regularly on the greenway. Never in our yard but there are plenty of people who have them in their yards, typically because they are near wooded areas or water source. They do not come into homes.

I live in North Raleigh, Stonehenge area and I never see snakes around my house. We do see a hawk often that comes to rear of the house but it is friendly and beautiful. If people don't like Raleigh for whatever reason, feel free to move out at your convenience. I lived in LA, by Chicago and in Dallas and in big city in China before, Raleigh is the best place for me. A lot less traffic, nicer weather, more quieter, etc. I can visit mountains or the beach any time.

I found NC to be a very boring place to live. Hot and humid in the summer, cold and damp in the winter. I have lived in the Raleigh and Greensboro areas. I would pick Greensboro if I had to move back. The Raleigh Durham area is a "no go" for me. I found the culture there to be very flawed. It's the only place I have ever lived where bad mouthing other people to elevate yourself is considered normal. I lived in Raleigh 3 separate times. If you like head games, this is the place for you.

The fact is that the only good Chinese food anywhere is food in neighborhoods that are Chinese, and you won't find any of those down South. Even in Charlotte the only Chinese food is the garbage that they sell to the "Lo Fan" barbarians, that they would never eat themselves. I used to date Chinese women in New York City and got to know the difference.
