@naomiwashburn using metal skewers instead of wood ones doesn't change anything. The problem isn't the material of the skewer, it's the nature of how clay dries. Clay gets smaller as it dries, if it is not allowed to do that, it cracks to make up the difference... and cracking is not what you want.

Couldn't you fix the problem with the beads shrinking on the skewer by using metal skewers instead of wood? How would that affect the final product?
